Part One
He entered the house compound and knocked on the door. An elderly lady opened it and looked at him from top to bottom.
"Can I meet with Dubeyji" , he asked. She didn't budge nor did she answer him. I'm Yash Schindia. The elderly lady was furious for his audacity to be there and pushed him to go away. Hearing the commotion in the living room a man appeared and responded to him.
"Why are you here? We already are in so much pain because of your wife, why do you have to show up here?"
Dubeyji, actually I'm here because of her, well he didn't how to start this, it was an absurd idea to begin with but she begged him and he has to do it for her sake.
"Well, I have a proposition to make." The man shot back at him, " your wife has destroyed my Aarti's life, what can you possibly do to change it? " Yash thought for a while and then answered, "I can marry her and give the child my name ." At this moment there were two other ladies who were listening to this conversation with a shocked expression on their faces.
"What??, Please go away from here. I won't allow this, " Mr Dubey told him. Yash just stood there partly relieved this whole thing didn't materialise. As he was about to leave the elderly lady took Dubey by arms and shook him.
" Sattu, are you mad, you are rejecting this man who wants to marry your daughter".
"What else do you want me to do say yes, he is a married man", Dubeyji was looking more confused at this proposition.
And this point, Yash made it clear that he is not leaving or divorcing his wife.
"I can only marry her traditionally, I won't leave my wife."
"Sattu, who else will marry your pregnant and unwed daughter, settle this matter before others find out."
Dubeyji felt very vulnerable at this stage and tears just fell from his eyes. Yash couln't bear to see this man like this. Why did things ended up like this?, he thought. He felt sorry for everyone even himself. He was married for only six months and now he is separated from his wife. And here he is making arrangements to marry another.
A younger woman appeared and held Dubeyji's hand.
"Bauji, I don't want to marry this man or any other man. Please don't do this to me."
"Look at this girl, do you want your parents to die of shame. How are you going to bring a child up without a husband? Agree to this marriage or get rid of your paap", the elderly lady threatened her.
Aarti knelt beside her father and started sobbing.
He picked her up and said, "Aarti, this is the only option left for us."
Dubeyji went nearer to Yash and said "Your wife has committed a sin, she has taken a life so you will have to make parayscit for her."
Yash left from the place feeling heavier. The Dubeys didn't give much resistance because they had too much to lose. How will he convince his family, what will he say to them. He stalled the matter for two days and when he couldn't keep it longer he discussed the matter with his parents. As he expected they were flabbergasted with the mere mention of it. Why must all of them pay for Arpita's mistake. Yash reminded them that Arpita is also family. They were convinced that there are must be other options. Yash did not relent, he didn't speak to anyone in the family for days. He even called Arpita's parents and told them this is Arpita's wish for him to help the girl. He told them that Arpita threatened to harm herself if he refused her. Finally after much coaxing from Arpita's family and Yash's emotional blackmail they reluctantly agreed.
The Dubeys and Schindias agreed to have a small wedding at a temple. Yash and Aarti hardly looked at each other the whole time. Aarti never imagined she will be marrying someone else besides Prashant. They had promise to live and to die together but now she is still alive and he is gone. If not for the child in her womb she probably would have joined him. As if it couldn't get worse she had to marry the husband of the person who took Prashant's life. Prashant was so excited for their marriage, he selected her wedding lehenga and bought her all the jewelleries. Aarti was wearing everything Prashant bought her but he wasn't there to see her decked up. When all the rituals were done, Aarti started to get agitated, she didn't want to follow them to their house, she didn't know them and was worried that they might ill-treat her. Her mother Shobha felt her pain yet helpless, she assured her that everything will be alright.
Everyone welcomed her into the house even though she sensed that she was an unwanted guest in the house. Aarti was ushered to an unused room and she was relieved.
"I don't think you did the right thing by bringing this girl into this house. Two wives in the same house, it has never happened in this family before", Yash's mother Gayatri vented out.
"Bhabhi, not to mention she is pregnant with another man's child, chi chi. If outsiders know about this our reputation will be damaged", his Buaji added.
"Yash beta, you have two wives but neither will give you any happiness" she continued.
Yash felt no point arguing with any of them and he just left the place and went to his room. He thought to himself that he only agreed to marry for Arpita's sake, to lessen her guilt. Arpita is his only wife ,he will wait for her to come back and everything will be back to normal.
So both Yash and Aarti from total strangers started to live under the same roof. They were optimistic that this arrangement will be a temporary one. Another solution will come their way, till then they would to go through this no matter how uncomfortable.
