Part Two

Aarti spent many hours in her room arranging her clothes and taking a nap. She dreaded to go out and meet the rest of the family members. After taking a bath, she sat on the bed fidgeting on what to do next. She didn't eat the whole day and was famished. Then, she heard a knock on the door. Aarti let the person in, she was Vidhi the elderst daughter-in-law of the house. Vidhi brought her food and Aarti thanked her graciously. Vidhi was a friendly person, she made Aarti feel at ease. Aarti was glad that she will have at least one friend in this house. Before leaving Vidhi told her that she cannot hide forever in the room and from tomorrow onwards she needs to help with households chores and appear during the meal sessions otherwise bauji and mummyji will be upset. Aarti just nodded and thanked her again for bringing food.

Since Prashant died she had this recurring dream every night and tonight was no different. In her dream, Prashant is drenched in blood and Is calling her. She goes to him, put his head on her lap and strokes his hair to comfort him. He smiles at her and tells her to stay by his side. Just then Aarti got up and overcame with extreme grief she started wailing. Yash who wasn't asleep at that time heard some sound coming from her room since it was close to his. As he went nearer he knew exactly what the sound was. He stood at her room door, thinking to knock on it but later decided against it. Yash was disturbed and walked back to his room.

He sat on the bed and recalled the sequence of events at the night the incident happened. Arpita had a dinner date with her college friends and he had a business meeting to attend. Both of them left separately. After finishing his meeting he was heading home and got a call from Arpita. She sounded panicky and told him to rush to City Hospital. When he got to the ER Unit she was sitting on one of the benches. He was so glad to see her safe and he hugged her.

"Yash, I hit someone, he is badly injured and is in the ICU," she explained to him.

They sat together on the bench and after some time she said , "if anything happens to him, I would not be able to forgive myself."

Yash comforted her and told her not to worry. Just then, the police arrived to take her statement. While taking the statement, the investigating officer noticed something suspicious about Arpita and took her to the lab to run some tests. From that moment onwards everything started to spiral out of control. The injured man's condition deteriorated and the doctors couldn't save him. Arpita's situation was no better, the lab test found her blood alcohol content exceeded the limit. She was taken in for killing someone under the influence of alcohol. The dead man's family came later, visibly distraught. That was the first time he saw Aarti, she just stood there motionless. Yash stayed awake for a long time until he dozed off.

The next morning Aarti got up early and helped Vidhi to prepare breakfast. While the rest were eating breakfast she just stayed in the kitchen. Staying out of sight will assure her survival in the house, she reckoned. For lunch, only the womenfolk were there so Vidhi asked her to join them at the table. She reluctantly agreed. Yash's mother and buaji gave her a very discerning look so she was very uncomfortable sitting with them. Dinner time again, she stayed away. This went on for a couple of days later weeks. Yash and Aarti always made a deliberate attempt to stay out of each other's way, even when they did stumble accidently they just smiled awkwardly and moved in the opposite direction.

After a month and a half there, most of them warmed up to her and she to them. She had Vidhi and Prateik, Yash's youngest brother as companions. They usually chit chat during their evening tea breaks and talked about everything and nothing. Buaji still disapproved of her but with time spurred less toxic. Yash's father and eldest brother were always cordial to her . Yash's mother surprisingly took a liking to her, Aarti and Gayatri had one thing in common they were both religious so they naturally bonded. Aarti felt her grief lessen with time, it was only when she was alone and at night the pain intensified.

One day Yash came home early and heard laughter from the kitchen area. He went there and saw Aarti laughing her heart out.

Yash was standing at the entrance when he heard Aarti saying, "Prateik bhaiya, Yashji is the khadoos type, I can't believe he had crush on his school teacher and used to carry her books around."

Prateik and Vidhi saw Yash and gestured to Aarti to turn around. She did, saw him and made an , "Oops!".

Yash just ignored her and asked Vidhi, "Bhabhi, can you make for me ginger tea, I have a headache."

Vidhi was called to do some urgent work so she left the task to Aarti. Aarti made the tea and took it to his room. That was the first time she entered his room, she left the cup on his study table and made a dash to exit the room. Just then, she heard, "Aartiji'" "Oh no," she thought, what is he going to say? She turned around and faced him.
