I know this was a while ago but I wanted to know what you thought. I personally thought that he felt too bad and apologized too much. I also felt that he did that because being honest and n lying is important to him.
He was serious about the apology because he felt his lie might break Aarti's trust and also because he himself is compliant and sticks to the truth
We might say he need not have apologized to the extent he did, that too for this simple lie...but considering the fact that he hates lies, he must've felt extremely burdened

I didnt cast my vote because I was not actually in favour both the options. He was not very wrong and I really didnt think it was too much.
For him, a lie is a lie. So, apology was required according to him. And him hiding things, was not that wrong since he was asked to do so. But it was a lie and so he thought of an apology.
