I've been meaning to make this post for ages but never got round to it but it's been bugging me so here goes..

I'm not a Hindu nor an Indian so I was just wondering if anyone could clarify for me as to whether it is necessary for a woman to change her name to the name of a man's deceased wife, once she marries him? Like Aarti had to change her name to Arpita, does this happen in real life?
I've grown up watching Indian shows all my life, but have never seen this happen in another show, so I thought maybe it's a cultural thing in some areas of India or something..
No offence intended if it does happen in real life, but it seems slightly unfair to force someone to change their name to the name of a mans deceased wife. I personally would never do it..

Anyway I hope I didn't offend anyone by asking this question. I'm sorry if I did.😊

Its a reallly outdated concept, but some people still use it. The use of it in this show confuses me though. Yash's family is not as conservative as I would imagine a family would have to be do use it.
I don't think its a religious concept though. I think its more cultural.
