but yes.. I m all 😍 for Chandragupta Maurya.

bhuvi the discussion was if PRC was the greatest king in history and if not who is? anything that would help everyone get involved in something really intellectual, put forth their views (without arguing) and help members learn about something (as long as its atleast somewhat relevant to the serial is all right 😊)

according to me the greatest emperors are the ones who build their kingdom.. so prc will never be in the list because during his rule the kingdom was defeated and it disintegrated.
don't know much abt shivaji.. but i feel he also finally lost it to aurangazeb.. if that is the case.. then even shivaji maharaj is removed from my list...

One of my favorite is Chandragupta Maurya. he was not a prince.. didn't have any army to start with .. but still laid the foundation of the greatest dynastry.. which ruled almost whole of india.(chanakya also had a great role to play in this). bimbisar was also good.. atleast he did not loose any teritories of his kingdom. Ashoka was good in the begining.. expanded his kingdom... but i really hate him for sending his kids for theerth yatra to sri-lanka n all.. thus left his kingdom with no heir.. n the great dynasty that his father n grandfather created was destroyed by him.

Then comes the gupta kings.. starting with chandragupta who started this dynasty.. followed by samudragupta who expanded the empire and then by chandragupta-2 who furter made it strong... but thats it.. his successors destroyed everything..

But the person i really love(though he was not a king or emperor)is sardar patel.. he united the whole of india..even the kashmir problem wld not have occured if nehru had not come in between.. he cannot be called a emperor because india had become a democratic country by then.. but still he is a nation builder.. laid the foundation for us

i admire sardar patel a lot.....as far as kings are concern i think vikramaditya was great...but there isnt enough literature available about him....do u know any thing about him......

You have chosen a topic for some true historians.
For me to judge the greatness of a king let me first establish the judgement criteria
Rich – but not greedy
Fit and Strong
Inspiring
Brave
Wise
Firm – but fair
A good judge of Character
Good Administrator
Territory
Army

With my extremely limited knowledge of History I would narrow down to few names in history……..

Maurya(322–185 BCE )
Among the Mauryas, I would personally favour Asoka over Chandragupta Asoka got his empire as part of legacy, he nevertheless took it to great heights during his reign. History calls him cruel…… but I would call him just as cruel as any other king of his times or later… Afterall no wars are won without bloodshed. 😭 Under his rule almost the whole of India , extended from Kashmir in the north to Deccan plateau in the south and Assam in the east to Afghanistan in the west. Such was the extent of his empire that not just India, but even neighboring lands of Afghanistan, Balochistan, Nepal came under his kingdom. However vastness of Kingdom is not why I call him great. His entry into the hall of fame stems from the Ashoka's Dhamma established by him, which means an able king should be courageous, responsible for his subjects, take up initiative in tasks like constructing roads, hospitals, rest houses, etc.
And I also wouldn't penalize him for sending his kids to teerth-yatra, that being his personal family matter.

Guptas(320 to 550 CE)
Founded by Chandragupta their dynasty was placed alongside with the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty and Roman Empire as a model of a classical civilization.
Most worthy of mention would be Samudragupta, whose empire extended from the Himalayas to the river Narmada and from the Brahmaputra to the Yamuna. He is considered the Napoleon of India. He performed Ashwamedha yajna (horse sacrifice) to underline the importance of his conquest. But I'd still rate him a shade lower than Asoka in terms of almost all criteria 🤓
Moving over to the medieval history of the Rajputs and the Marathas.

Pardon me for not mentioning other worthy names here………… but generally when we talk of the Rajput valor Maharana Pratap and Prithviraj Chauhan .I'll talk of PRC later(my dessert comes last).

Though extremely brave and valiant, Maharana Pratap, spent his life trying to recapture a lost world. Though his missions against Akbar and some victories are worth noting, not much is mentioned about his administration and love for the masses. So I with due respect would not take him into this league.

One of the most able administrators , ruler and warrior in India was undoubtedly Chhatrapati Shivaji(1627-1680) the founder of Maratha empire . kingdom established by Chhatrapati Shivaji known as "Hindavi Swaraja" (Sovereign Hindu state) grew and spread beyond Attock in Northwest India (now in Pakistan)and beyond Cuttack in East India in course of time, to become the strongest power in India. At the age of 20, he took out his very first military attack and captured the Torna Fort of the kingdom of Bijapur .

Another name worth the mention is Akbar who again unified a major part of India and ruled with firm and just hands. However my knowledge about him is very limited.

Unlike many others who preferred to keep PRC out of this league, I still keep him here for various reasons like the following:

1. None of the mentioned warriors apart from PRC won battles at the age of 13-14. Infact his career was actually finished by the time most of the others were stating it. So I'd give him a benefit of doubt that had he lived longer, he would have expanded his kingdom just as much as others if not more.
2. As mentioned by some that he was lucky to have someone like Chander Bardai to write about his feats, I'd mention the chinese scholars who visited during Asoka's and Gupta periods to write about their accomplishments. So even those emperors received their fair share of limelights.

Yes he lost, the last battle of his life. But remember that was the only battle he lost!!
Unlike others I wouldn't blame his love-life being the cause of his downfall.
The reason for his downfall could have been his over-emotional nature. That's why I don't place him as high as the politically smart Shivaji or Asoka. But he is definitely in the league……. And not far behind. 👍🏼

On a more personal front, I feel comparing PRC to Asoka or Shivaji or Akbar would be like comparing 20-20 cricket with a test match 😉

phew long post......... Some free time in office due to the coming winter vacs 😊
