omg noooooooooo waaaaaaaaay first of all history is written by winners... a lot of it is not what it may seem... prithviraj chauhan was very lucky that he found an excellent friend cum court poet in chand bardai who has made his legend known....it is very innocent to think that prithviraj chauhan was the greatest king in Indias history š² please remember that what they are showing is not the actual story of the king.
Prithviraj chauhan cannot even be considered an emperor - he is a king... the last greatest hindu king but no way the greatest emperor of Indian history... even in Rajput history Maharana Pratap was a far greater and more successful king than Prithviraj Chauhan. But these two are not the greatest kings in Indian history if the following criteria are taken into place -> administration, extent of empire/kingdom, status of women, development/flourishment of various arts/culture/education/literacy etc
I have read a bit in Indian history in the past few years... (and no way would I consider knowing even a small percentage of it...)
but according to what i have read so far... I would say the Guptas - Samudra Gupta (chandragupta vikramaditya's father) who was responsible for entirely expanding on establishing a firm ground.. following his father's footsteps...
1. He extended an empire 5 times the size of PRC's but they had such a peaceful reign. Inspite of capturing kingdoms, he allowed the kings to rule independently hence all the minor kingdoms supported their rule (unless the kings were totally against the Guptas - then they had to be usurped)
2. women had great powers and were treated very respectfully.
3. education, art and literature was at a forefront.
4. the system of administration and taxation and inheritance was far ahead of its time.
5. art, trade and literature flourished.
6. extreme tolerance to all religions.
7. capital punishment was abolished.
people never used to lock their homes as the kingdom was so peaceful (this is not a folklore, this is from inscriptions found on pillars in various places).
the gupta kings were a perfect combination of courage + wit + nobility and hence their times were indeed the golden times of India
asoka was too brutal
chandragupta maurya was mostly led to his rule by his minister chanakya... hence his successors were not able to keep up the legacy...his rules was very successful but it was not an empire...
if anyone says that prithviraj chauhan was the greatest king in history because this is what they believe... all i would request you to do is go to a library (any city) and go through some of the books on history based on archeological evidence... and you will have a less distorted version of Indian history...š
