Anu,
Thanks for this post. You have been saying this for a few days now with negligent response from this fourm š - the reason, of course, is that all of us here are too close, too involved in the details of this soap to step back and see it merely as a social issue.
You are absolutely right - say No to domestic violence and abuse. say it loud, say it strong, mean it becasue otherwise you'll be hit again.
I want to qualify a few things about this soap and its context however. I don't know where you're located. Going by this statement: "In any present day or time a man will be charged with battery against him and be in jail", I'm assuming you're in the First World. ( First and foremost thanks for your post . Yes I am located in CA - USA. I know this for a fact that it happens in rural India , but the soap is located in proper Allahabad. It is a big city with lot of rich culture and heritage. I am surprised that it happens in metropolition cities too These soaps are mainly watched by women and I think the media should be responsible in showing the remedy of the situation and not encourage it. There is a reason why India is still demeaned as third world country. It is because they do not dwell with the social issues in rural areas.I mean not just domestic matters but in every other matter like education, race. etc. )
The sad fact is that India is not in that situation. Men are not charged for battery still much less do they go to jail for it. The problem is not that a few families are dysfunctional, the problem is that in certain sections of society, in certain insular stratas, the system is dysfunctional.
( Well a society starts with a single family and if one family is stopped there is a chance a chain system will be formed. change has to start somewhere and through somebody. And media and television plays a very important role)
When Krishna or Komal say that this has always happened, they mean it. It happens in their family, it must have happened in Sumitra Devi's maika, Kesar's maika and also the home of this new girl Shakti is about to marry. It happens in the whole community. It is NO surprise to any of the women - they all know this is the state of affairs.( They might have seen it and they might think it is normal. But they have to be taught and educated that it is not acceptable and it is wrong to suffer in pain). This is EXACTLY why the Thakurs hate and fear Pratigya - she's from the OUTSIDE. A woman who has not been taught from the cradle that she will be hit and that's ok. She displays shock, horror. she protests. She tells them she won't be hit, or controlled. That is why they're trying to kill her, muffle her.
( Well lastly I would like to say that I have been taught by my parents never to suffer and always stand up for the truth.Well thats why I am a prosecuter and I cannot tolerate violence towards women)Bubble
I really appreciate the effort here, such efforts will always find critics and will resists the change at times even ridiculed and bashed but keep writing such wonderful posts here on this forum. You can make a difference only if you don't give up. šš¼
