Bhima is my favorite character in the epic, so nothing has pissed me off more than his depiction in the serial.
They showed the childhood Bhima played by Miraj Joshi perfectly, and during that time, it made sense that he'd take centerstage. But once the adults arrived, Bhima was reduced to the Pandava equivalent of Shakuni - there for comic relief. In the Lakshagriha part of the story, Bhima was the main hero - starting w/ burning down the house (hint: it wasn't Purochana!!!) and then killing Hidimba & Bakasura. Arjun's turn comes @ Draupadi's swayamvara. But like you said, I won't be surprised if they show him taking lunch breaks in the battlefield while Arjun does the heavy lifting & fights Duryodhan. Only question - who will then fight Bheeshma/Karna, Drona, Ashwatthama, et al? Similarly, like I mentioned in the CV f/b thread, I wouldn't be surprised if Arjun vows to break Duryodhan's thighs & drink Dushashan's blood.
Another thing - the importance of Bhima was illustrated after the Hidimba marriage. Bhima agreed to live w/ her as long as she was childless, but once she had Ghatotkacha, he left her in Ghatotkacha's care. He being a rakshasha was full grown right after being born. If Bhima was so useless, he could have simply stayed w/ Hidimba. But it was he, not Arjun, who was important to the security of the Pandavas. Arjun didn't have his gandhiva then, and besides, had Arjun used his bow to do anything, that would have blown their cover.
Another thing about Bhima's eating - it was recognized that he needed all that food to be as strong as he was. Like during the post lakshagriha period, when the Pandavas would go begging, from what they'd receive, Kunti would give half of all the cooked food to Bhima, and divide the rest b/w her sons & herself. If Kunti thought that Bhima didn't need all that, she'd have given him 1/6th of everything, and divided the whole food equally.
Bhima was a foodie for sure, but did it make him a less powerful warrior? Certainly not.
I hate how his character has been sidelined. They way he laughs, it seems so fake and is irritating too.
It was Bhima who always protected his mother and brothers, and he was the one who killed demons as well as the 100 Kauravas.
The twins don't hold much importance like the other three do. But the other three are equally important.
