Significance of Aamir's hat in D3?

One thing I couldnt figure out the significance of Aamir's hat in D3. Why did he and even Salman promote D3 wearing that hat which simply had no contribution to the story except that Aamir's dad used to wear it. Vidya for Kahaani went around promoting it as a pregnant woman...it was supposed to be the biggest surprise as she wasnt pregnant at all in the movie. I was expecting something similar...the hat helping him escape or something...

considering it was a circus based movie, he could have atleast used it for the rabbit trick
