SMS reveals Greg's grudge

CNN-IBN | Posted Mar 27, 2007 at 21:02 | Updated Mar 28, 2007 at 00:24

New Delhi: Beleaguered coach Greg Chappell was not happy with the composition of the Indian team for the World Cup, it was revealed on Tuesday.

There have been reports that there were divisions in the Indian team which evenually led to a disjointed team crashing to a first round exit. Now reports have surfaced that coach Greg Chapell was unhappy with the team.

Chappell had sent an explosive SMS to veteran cricket writer Rajan Bala before leaving for the West Indies. Chappell apparently vioced his displeasure at the team composition. He blames the senior players for vetoing the inclusion of younger players.

He even goes on to say in the SMS that Chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, sided with the seniors fearing a media backlash.

"Even in the last selection meeting, I fought for youth. The senior players fought against it and the chairman went with them out of fear of media, if youth did not perform," Chappell wrote in his SMS.

It doesn't end there. Chappell also fired a salvo at Yuvraj Singh calling his inclusion a big risk. Yuvraj's attitude also has come in for flak with Chappell saying that he believed he was a star. Chappell also tried hard for the inclusion of Suresh Raina, calling him a must in the squad.

In the same SMS, the former Australian captain observed that young wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik had leadership material. "Karthik will be a very good batsman and by the way, he is a potential leader."

Now with this article I rightly stand by Greg Chappel , its clear that politics plays a big hand even in team selection . I dontblame greg Chappel for the defeat at all , when the players didnt execute and instead wanted their own set of players in the team and shame on vensarkar for accomdating that and then acting innocent .
I always had this opinion abt Yuvaraj and good that its coming out now

This shows Greg Chapell in good light. I am glad he fought for Dinesh Karthik. I like that boy he is a potential leader. God what is this media backlash they fear. Media should butt out and let the professionals do their job, Greg Chappell is right we need youngsters on the team. We have to try and develop the young players, think about the future, and what if they did fail, atleast they would have tried their best and got some valuable experience and benefit them in the next world cup. Did the senior players perform anyways Tendulkar and Dhoni noooooooooo. Tendulkar was a great batsman, but was he ever a good captain or a leader. No he was not I always felt he was one dimensional. Now that his batting has lost its touch its time for him to retire since he is not capable to captaining the team either. Dinesh Karthik is the future he is young too, so if they start developing him now he has so many good years ahead of him. I like Kaif as well. Wish these people played instead of Agarkar, Tendulkar and Dhoni.

agree with you completely , Infact I was looking at some videos posted in Ibnlive.com and they all blamed the coach and wanted Dravid to step down and infact give the captaincy to Sachin. When asked if Sachin should retire, all these ex-cricketers still spoke abt his past records and his past deeds .

If the yardstick to selection is performance then they should follow it for every player irrespective of his greatness in the past .I mean they completely overlooked his performance and instead blames ganguly , dravid and the rest .

I think Yuvraj is a wonderful player and fielder.
He performed good in two out of three matches in WC.
He has helped india in number of occasions.

One Question... HOW did the senior players have a say in the Team selection???? Wasnt it restricted ONLY to the captain? And here chappel is blaming the Senior players...

And btw this view is just because India lost... wasnt this team tagged as 'THE MOST BALANCED TEAM'which has represented India before the World Cup campaign began? Now the same team became a complete useless team???

This kind of attitude only shows what kind of a person Chappel is... instead of standing by the team and accepting the defeat with dignity and grace.. he now goes ahead and blames everyone else apart from himself. This kind of attitude shows exactly WHY there was NO unity in the team... u dont stand up for eachother, u are busy saving ur own back and this starts right from the top, the coach!

Completely agree with you. There is no point in fighting now. This is the team that was sent to the WC, whether is was good enough to win the cup or not is not the point, the point is they underperformed. It is necessary to look forward, learn from the mistakes instead of starting this blame game. Accountability starts with board down to the players. But once they review what has happened, it is pointless to squabble over 'what ifs', move forward, show us that they have matured and India truly deserves to be the number one cricketting nation in the world.
