CNN-IBN | Posted Mar 27, 2007 at 21:02 | Updated Mar 28, 2007 at 00:24New Delhi: Beleaguered coach Greg Chappell was not happy with the composition of the Indian team for the World Cup, it was revealed on Tuesday.
There have been reports that there were divisions in the Indian team which evenually led to a disjointed team crashing to a first round exit. Now reports have surfaced that coach Greg Chapell was unhappy with the team.
Chappell had sent an explosive SMS to veteran cricket writer Rajan Bala before leaving for the West Indies. Chappell apparently vioced his displeasure at the team composition. He blames the senior players for vetoing the inclusion of younger players.
He even goes on to say in the SMS that Chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, sided with the seniors fearing a media backlash.
"Even in the last selection meeting, I fought for youth. The senior players fought against it and the chairman went with them out of fear of media, if youth did not perform," Chappell wrote in his SMS.
It doesn't end there. Chappell also fired a salvo at Yuvraj Singh calling his inclusion a big risk. Yuvraj's attitude also has come in for flak with Chappell saying that he believed he was a star. Chappell also tried hard for the inclusion of Suresh Raina, calling him a must in the squad.
In the same SMS, the former Australian captain observed that young wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik had leadership material. "Karthik will be a very good batsman and by the way, he is a potential leader."
