BV: One man, one book and one pen can change the world!?

Dear Readers,

I watched Balika Vadhu since it's inception few years back. From day one it was said that the show is aimed at changing the attitude of the Indian men towards their women. I was wondering how successful the motto has been in past 4-5 years.

Has widow/divorce remarriage been more frequent?

Has kid-marriages abolished from the remote villages of India?

Has the Indian woman valued the seriousness of education and financial independence?

Well, how could I comment.

Do stories like BV could really change the attitude of human beings to the evils of the society? How could I comment?

However I would like to jot down names of few books (apart from Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Qur'an etc.) which in past have been able to do so to a great extent.

1. Anandamath - Originally written in Bengali by Bankim Chandra Chatterji and published in 1882. Set in the background of the Sannyasi Rebellion in the late 18th century, it is considered one of the most important novels in the history of Bengali and Indian literature. Its importance is heightened by the fact that it became synonymous with the struggle for Indian independence from the British Empire.

The national song of India, Vande Mataram was first published in this novel.

2. Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriett Beecher Stowe - Written by a middle aged, white woman in 1851, Uncle Tom's Cabin has been credited for changing the views of slavery in the north and continues to serve as a reminder of the effects of slavery and other inhumane acts.

3. Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank - This landmark book details the days of a Jewish family in hiding during the Nazi takeover in the Netherlands. The innocence of this young girl so full of hopes and dreams is in sharp contrast to the reality of her ending at the hands of the Nazis. This book has become a symbol and reminder against racial persecution.

4. Kama Sutra (circa 2nd century AD)
This ancient Indian book concerns love more than sex. It could be argued that Richard Burton's 1883 translation started to change Western attitudes to sex.

5. The Meaning of Relativity by Albert Einstein - Published as one book, this is actually four lectures Einstein gave a Princeton in 1921. This work demonstrates the genius behind the thinking that made Einstein famous.

6. Lady Chatterley's Lover by DH Lawrence - Lawrence's book about an aristocratic woman who commits adultery with a working-class man was banned in the UK due to the sexual details and language used. This book brought the idea of censorship to light and helped overthrow it.

7. Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler (Vol-1 1925 & vol-2 1926) - This infamous book is essentially an autobiography that also outlines the National Socialist political ideology. Hitler changed the world, not his book, but Mein Kampf was a tool of the Nazi political machine.

8. Guerilla Warfare by Che Guevara - A Marxist revolutionary famous for helping the plight of the oppressed, Guevara wrote this book as an instruction manual of revolt for those trapped in a totalitarian regime. It has become a guidebook for thousands around the world, not only those living in an oppressive state.

9. The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith - Smith's book, published in 1776, advocates a free-market economy. This book is largely viewed as the beginnings of modern economics.

10. The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud (1899/1900) - Die Traumdeutung revealed Freud's theory on dream analysis and introduces the ego. A flawed but influential book in understanding the human unconscious

There are the books we read, and then there are the books that change our life. We can all look back on the books that have shaped our perspective on politics, religion, economics, society, and love. Some will even become a source of inspiration for the rest of our life.

There is so much to learn about life's great questions from these books...referred by you !

The reading of books provides us with such pleasure as we do not get from any other activity. Great is the blessing of books!!!

They contain the best experiences and thoughts of their writers.

Literature is said to mirror society. Writers put in their books not only their own ideas and feelings, but also what they observe and find in society. The books of the past reflect the condition of the times in which they were written. By reading books written by great thinkers, we come in contact with their minds. Books enable us to know the best of different countries... the world in general !!

Loneliness is no trouble for a reader !!!! On the contrary solitude is considered as a blessing for a voracious reader !!

Now-a-days the world is changing fast. A man cannot remain in roach with the changes in his own country, or in the world, without reading the latest literature. One who wants to be respected in cultured society must keep oneself well-informed. Good magazines, newspapers and other books provide us with valuable upto-date information!!

Except these two books---

Mein Kampf"by Adolf Hitler

Gorilla Warfare---by Che Guevara

I read all the other books .

A wide range of books ...almost covered the most important topics... a very good information...we must consider it as an education ! Very good post Debbiee !!

Thanks for the appreciation Seetha, both over here in forum and the PM.

Please note that these books influence our day-to-day life.

Which Indian has not heard of "Vande Mataram" even if not reading AnandMath?
Who does not know Einstein's E= mc(square) and it's significance?
Who has not heard of Kamasutra and different positions even if not going through the actual book?
Who is unaware of the attrocities of 2nd world war even if not reading Anne's Frank's diary?
Who is not aware of the economics and psychiatric science whose father is Sigmund Freud himself.

If you go through these books, you might not find anything new as many more books are written on them and carry the same message in a more refined form. However they still stand as the milestones in the most original form 😊

Thought provoking post from you as usual😊
We are talking about works of fiction and their role in change of attitudes

I don't think a book a film or a tv show can bring about a change and I do not believe it is their duty to bring about a change either.

Fictional works should be like mirrors which reflect the image of the contemporary society. That 's where their role ends.

Change should come from the person/society which is viewing the mirror image. How one perceives the image depends upon the person who is looking at the image.

If a person doesn't like what he/she sees in the mirror they can take measures to improve themselves/society so that they like what they see.

On the other hand they can be people who may see the image but may be indifferent to what that mirror shows up because they really don't care what they see in the reflection

There may be another category who may not like the mirror image but may end up blaming the mirror instead saying that it is presenting a distorted version of the reality

Some people may like what they see in the mirror may and may not want to change anything.
Books/shows/films can only be mirrors and the change should come from within the society which we live in.

We are responsible for the situations we find ourselves in and it is upto us to make or break and it is not the duty of the people who create these works.

Thanks Debbie for giving the list of the books. Your posts are always full of information guiding us to the path of contentment .😊 I have not read these books only The Mein Kampf that too as a reference book for it was asked by our Teacher. lately i have realised that books are our best companion one which is ever ready to give its valuable company never allow us to be melancholy, the best partner in times of distress and of course imparting useful knowledge. Debbie i am more interested in reading newspapers but a loving friend of mine has inspired me to read about Gandhi. I understand there are vast range of books on him hence it will take lot of time but once i finish i will surely like to read the books prescribed by you.
Thank you.

Not really buddy. I am in the process of amending "The curse of Damini". There are many technical and factual details which needs to be revisited.

Also the English should seem somewhat ancient. I wish to get rid of the modern touch.

Few new characters would be introduces. Gauri and Ganga's characters would be further enhanced. I have to go through many books of that era for the same.

Currently reading "My experiments with truth" by M.K. Gandhi 😊
Also I am in process of collecting ancient and meaningful poetry.
I wish to turn this story to a real classic before printing.
