This is the explanation given by my gynecologist . Raw papaya has some chemical which makes it a abortion agent. In olden days it was used for abortion when there were no medical help available.

In today's era the fruit has undergone hybridization and it does not have the same effect . But as it is a age old saying people do avoid papaya completely in pregnancy .

Papaya has lots of prostaglandins-the same hormone which induces period-also present in Til ke laddo/Sesame seeds.PGs are known to cause many physiological actions,many of which include contratcions of the uterine smooth muscle causing expelling of uterine contents,the very same pg is also pharmacologically used as abortifacient .hence young women nearing puberty are given lots of papaya,which also contains lots of Vitamin a ,necessary for skin & eye health.Raw/fruit-Papaya & pineapple are avoided in pregnant women because of the strong action on the smooth muscle.
