In most of the tele-serials it's being shown that pregnant women should avoid raw papaya. So is there any science/logic to it or it is just another word of gossip for women in rural India?

As far as I have heard from doctors; Papaya is one of the best fruit sources of vitamin C. Its a laxative which helps soften the stool. Raw Papaya softens the stools and causes bowel movement. People who have problem of constipation are advised to eat papaya for the same. (Reference - http://www.healwithfood.org/constipation/foods.php)

During early pregnancy doctors advise women not to have raw papaya for the same reason as it may lead to strong bowel movement sometimes leading to miscarriage.

Miscarriage has nothing to do with bowel movement. Raw papaya contains an enzyme called papain that could cause uterine contractions, hence is not recommended to pregnant women. That being said, it does not affect every pregnant woman, maybe the high-risk ones, hence the warning. There is no harm in eating ripe papaya.

Raw papaya is often used as a meat tenderizer in cooking. May be because of the action of the
Enzyme. I dont know if it can enter the baby's blood stream thru the placenta. If it could
Then yes there is a danger of miscarriage. It may still be old wife's tale. But why take risk?

I am very sad...so sad that it is hard to put my emotions...I am worried about the cow that ate pappya sabji and if she is preg...she may lose her calf...and if it was not cow but a bull...I am ok as so far thetalented friends saythe abortion is caused by uterine contractions...not sure if pappya has any effect on potency of dear bull..
Anyway..if it were anandi , she should have made sure to feed it only to bull... 😉
Please take it lightly ...as nothing entertainment is seen in bv now a days
