1) Now obviously, we don't know if the spoilers are true - I am only writing this based on what I read in Ayesha's thread (though seeing that random Adham-bandhi scene in Thursday's episode, it does now make sense !) 2) I am not CONDONING any of what I have typed...I am as much AGAINST child marriage as the next person here...
3) This message is not FOR or AGAINST any of the characters in the show - its purely about the TRACK!😊
*****************************************************I know CVs are trying to portray our lovely girl as a 16th century feminist and oppose Adham Khan's decision - and I'm quite positive this track shall be welcomed by the audience too (though for once I'd hoped that after this slew of women-dominated-tracks i.e. dowry, body heat and pregnancy we'd move on to more factual tracks and NOT another harem-oriented one! ALAS! Looks like that's not the case)
Anyway, I saw the uproar in the other thread and I am certain Jodha shall also react somewhat in this manner. This sits fine with today's audience., no doubt! Besides, Adham is an out and about true-blue villain so he's NOT going to get ANY sympathizers😆!!!!
However, dears - logically this track actually shouldn't make much sense (so says someone who's been sitting through double-trouble MC kaand and blue vomit😆)
Anyway, 14 -16 was quite the normal age for girls to get married till about 60-70 years ago in India. My grandmom got married when she was 13 and so did many of my other aunt-grandmas! Girls in generations before got wedded off even before. They used to be retained at their Maikas till they attained a suitable age to be sent off! One of my unfortunate aunt-grandmas lost a husband whom she'd never even met in the process and lived a kunwaari-widow for the rest of her life. Sad, but true!
Secondly, multiple marriages were also quite common in India till the last century or so (especially amongst higher classes since the men could afford to support more branches of family) Therefore, by the time a man wedded his third or fourth wife, the age difference could quite commonly be a 20+ years age gap! So, if anything - had this story really happened then - the baandhi's family would be quite elated at the prospect that their daughter got a rishtaa from such a powerful person in court i..e her status would be elevated in society!
Examples of these ^^^ i.e. child marriage (as we know of it today) and multiple marriages would have taken place in Jodha's own family too (possibly even by her own brothers etc) So, logically this track shouldn't make sense in lieu of the 16th century set up.
And why talk of 16th century - not long ago I was doing a project on life of rural women in Uttar Pradesh - EVEN TODAY, in most of the littler villages, parents try to get their girls married off by the time they are 16-17 because the maa-baap think its unsafe to keep a girl at home beyond this age( in case she gets maligned in any way - sick, I know!Thankfully, this isn't really the case in larger towns and cities!)
Shockingly, I read numerous interviews of these girls who seem to support their parents decisions too - with their only regret being that they couldn't study more!😕 In fact, given the opportunity - they want to do the same to their daughters. Though this is illegal in India today, no one is bothered - its more like parents don't report, girls don't complain and the police looks away!
I am now certain that polygamy got erased (rather than abolished) only because it wasn't economically viable!
Why all this - Did anyone catch Supermoms DID...how many mothers (and these looked like they came from more affluent backgrounds, not rural settings) mentioned they'd got married by the age of 16-18. Farah Khan constantly had to drum the message AGAINST marriages at this age!
So, my only issue is that since its a historical - I hope CVs research into the kind of tracks they bring forth and whether it holds good for that era. They could show Jodha revolting against the laws of the Sultanat and condemn trampling of prisoners or stoning of women - even that would sit well with the audience today - but, its not really how life was then, was it?
(I could be wrong and the track could be something else entirely - like the baandhi approaching Jodha and requesting for her help)
Now, how far this track would sound realistic in this setting I know not - hope the CVs handle it all well!
