On a more serious note - that's the reason behind the whole 'kanya-daan' btw
kanya = a girl who hasn't attained puberty...so when her parents gave her away, it was called kanyaa-daan
some wedding customs in south still require the bride to sit on her father's lap etc...since in those days it'd have been littler girls being wedded off...
its another issue that the dads these days are pretty much squashed by the time the function gets over 😆
