I was watching it again, and when, after the hug and the (genuine and infinitely tender) kiss on her head, he moves away and asks Aap hi ne Jodha Begum jo wo ark pilaya tha na? the expression in his eyes simply blew me away - they were so still and knowing and so very, very sad. Then, as you have described it, he builds up steam. It is microcontrolled and incredibly effective, and he never really blows his top as he used to do in some earlier OTT scenes.
Rajat's Jalal simply walks off with all his major scenes, and I do hope he gets to do more of them in the episodes ahead, instead of standard issue bickering with Jodha like a callow boy rather than like an emperor.
But for him, this show would be pedestrian, and would have been easily trumped by Maharana Pratap, which has splendid sets and costumes (it won a whole bunch of technical awards at the ITA, while JA got none), and despite being populated with archtypes rather than complex human beings, still has a superb Maharana Udai Singh and Kunwar Pratap and a magnificent Lady Macbeth-like 3rd queen - no wonder she won the ITA award for the best negative role for a female.

You guys are sweet calling me Annie reminds me of one of my fav movies.Shyamala you mentioned a very crucial point of this serial, in the hands of an lesser actor jalal wouldn't be as fascinating and enigmatic as he is. After sukanya wedding this is another time where we are seeing him start out at a baseline calmness, slowly building steam with his controlled aggression and then when he calms down again to some extent it really is a treat to watch. Rajat really excels in such scenes. He does an superlative job in tainting his aggression with disgust as he does with dawalgardh folks or anger mingled with grief when with bakshi. It is not always one shade anger. He doesn't have to even talk to express his sadness. The scene with ruqu was really sad, he might never be passionately in love with her like a man can be with a woman but he does love her in his own way. In the last episode or so jalal reminded us of his pain and the way it was projected on screen it trumped all of jodha tears. The wounds that might never heal from losing his first child have been ruthlessly torn open again. Even me as an audience didn't think too much on it carried away by jodha ghrina resulting in endless eye rolling from me. It is worthy of the writers to transition the story focus from who is trying to ruin jodha to how much jalal is hurt having being reminded of a dream not fulfilled.
So much so jalal made this about him and his pain, the big reveal to jodha was muted and only sanctioned a minute of the episode. Excellent ploy by the writers because I am sorry jodha and her disgust was never making any impact on me, but the moment jalal mentioned his children name, his broken dream, ruqu tears suddenly this track seemed relevant because we felt sad for them. So all in all a very emotional way to end this track.

Well, Annie (if I may), I am never surprised by your splendid analyses and your insight into character, in this case that of Jalal @blue. As you remarked so aptly 3 weeks ago, he truly walks alone, way ahead of the rest. That will be his fate all his life, as it is the unavoidable concomitant of greatness.
And Jalal is Jalal because Rajat plays him superlatively, repeatedly going beyond the script. With a lesser actor, it would not have been the same thing at all.
I do not know what kind of epic love story is going to be force fed to us now, but the CVs have already cheated me on the feisty, intelligent Jodha I had hoped for, who would be a combination of Diana and Juno, and left us with this blinkered, self-righteous,obstinate female who can do no wrong. Now I am sure I will be cheated on the epic love story as well, for I cannot see how there can be anything epic between such an ill-balanced pair.
But as I had noted in my response above to Meghana, a word can mean what you want it to mean, and so this langda prem katha will be duly labelled epic, and presented as an act of great condescension by Jodha towards Jalal. And why not, if it makes fro the greatest happiness of the greatest number?
If you have the time, do see my post to Meghana above.
