That is a lovely description of Rajat's magisterial handling of the scene with Bakshi Banu.

I was watching it again, and when, after the hug and the (genuine and infinitely tender) kiss on her head, he moves away and asks Aap hi ne Jodha Begum jo wo ark pilaya tha na? the expression in his eyes simply blew me away - they were so still and knowing and so very, very sad. Then, as you have described it, he builds up steam. It is microcontrolled and incredibly effective, and he never really blows his top as he used to do in some earlier OTT scenes.

Rajat's Jalal simply walks off with all his major scenes, and I do hope he gets to do more of them in the episodes ahead, instead of standard issue bickering with Jodha like a callow boy rather than like an emperor.

But for him, this show would be pedestrian, and would have been easily trumped by Maharana Pratap, which has splendid sets and costumes (it won a whole bunch of technical awards at the ITA, while JA got none), and despite being populated with archtypes rather than complex human beings, still has a superb Maharana Udai Singh and Kunwar Pratap and a magnificent Lady Macbeth-like 3rd queen - no wonder she won the ITA award for the best negative role for a female.

PS: Is Annie your real name or a nickname?

You guys are sweet calling me Annie reminds me of one of my fav movies.

Shyamala you mentioned a very crucial point of this serial, in the hands of an lesser actor jalal wouldn't be as fascinating and enigmatic as he is. After sukanya wedding this is another time where we are seeing him start out at a baseline calmness, slowly building steam with his controlled aggression and then when he calms down again to some extent it really is a treat to watch. Rajat really excels in such scenes. He does an superlative job in tainting his aggression with disgust as he does with dawalgardh folks or anger mingled with grief when with bakshi. It is not always one shade anger.

He doesn't have to even talk to express his sadness. The scene with ruqu was really sad, he might never be passionately in love with her like a man can be with a woman but he does love her in his own way. In the last episode or so jalal reminded us of his pain and the way it was projected on screen it trumped all of jodha tears. The wounds that might never heal from losing his first child have been ruthlessly torn open again. Even me as an audience didn't think too much on it carried away by jodha ghrina resulting in endless eye rolling from me. It is worthy of the writers to transition the story focus from who is trying to ruin jodha to how much jalal is hurt having being reminded of a dream not fulfilled.

So much so jalal made this about him and his pain, the big reveal to jodha was muted and only sanctioned a minute of the episode. Excellent ploy by the writers because I am sorry jodha and her disgust was never making any impact on me, but the moment jalal mentioned his children name, his broken dream, ruqu tears suddenly this track seemed relevant because we felt sad for them. So all in all a very emotional way to end this track.

Well, Annie (if I may), I am never surprised by your splendid analyses and your insight into character, in this case that of Jalal @blue. As you remarked so aptly 3 weeks ago, he truly walks alone, way ahead of the rest. That will be his fate all his life, as it is the unavoidable concomitant of greatness.

And Jalal is Jalal because Rajat plays him superlatively, repeatedly going beyond the script. With a lesser actor, it would not have been the same thing at all.

I do not know what kind of epic love story is going to be force fed to us now, but the CVs have already cheated me on the feisty, intelligent Jodha I had hoped for, who would be a combination of Diana and Juno, and left us with this blinkered, self-righteous,obstinate female who can do no wrong. Now I am sure I will be cheated on the epic love story as well, for I cannot see how there can be anything epic between such an ill-balanced pair.

But as I had noted in my response above to Meghana, a word can mean what you want it to mean, and so this langda prem katha will be duly labelled epic, and presented as an act of great condescension by Jodha towards Jalal. And why not, if it makes fro the greatest happiness of the greatest number?

If you have the time, do see my post to Meghana above.

Shyamala

when Jalal questions Jodha's character, its OK. but when Jodha questions Jalal's character it is not done...some ppl in this forum have become addicted Jodha bashers and it is spoiling our pleasure in the serial...it has started leaving a bad taste in our mouth...

My dear,

@red. You do not have to go to a society as orthodox as Saudi Arabia. Just read Tehmina Durrani's My Feudal Lord, set in late 20th century Pakistan. And as for your other comment about Akbar and Jodha's ghrina lines, you are spot on, and this Jodha is totally, totally unrealistic. So was the one in the film, but much less so as she was nowhere near as rude and confrontational.

The whole serial and large chunks of the viewers are living in a never never land wrt the Jodha-Jalal equation. Moreover, you do not even have to go to the Mughal way of life. Just watch the excellent and far more authentic Maharana Pratap and see how Maharana Udai Singh's 3 queens behave. Jodha and her bhashans at the drop of a hat are pure poppycock!

I also want to point out in realistic portrayals bakshi bano is very real. This is 16th century well before women liberation, can imagine blind devotion to husbands and men in General was the norm. I think I am the only one who felt bad for her. We need to view these characters thru 16th century purdah. And another thing I lived in Saudi for a large part of my life and let me tell you the things that I saw, rumours, expectations of women in that society, how men behaved lot of it people outside that sphere can never wrap their head around some of the stuff would shock and appall people.

Mughal were descendants of Persians so one can imagine the kind of culture that creates women like bakshi bano. If jalal is a true Mughal, I am sure akbar was in real life, at the first ghrina dialogue jodha was toast. But that does not mean I am calling them abusers, culture, way of thinking and expectations was different.

@ bold pink - Forget about Kings and Emperors, even petty 'zamindars' had innumerable wives and concubines of their own. If people have problems accepting facts of history then they are living in world of denial like Ruqaiya does in the show. These people needs to update themselves with real historical facts. I am not sayng I support bigamy or polygamy but it was the norm starting from our epics to the day laws were passed to prohibit this custom.

And I agree if Jalal wants to spend time with Jodha then even Jodha can't stop him.

A very nice balanced post.
Thanks Lana for your support on my comments and the post. Yep, I have no idea where Ekta is going with Jodha. She seems to be giving us the right Jalal or may be it is RT that is doing justice to it. Not that Paridhi is bad, but her character existed the way it is shown in 16th century is so unrealistic. Even in this century I would not be a fan of such a character and hence no idea what Ekta is trying to prove or show. But she must be doing something right as Shyamala points out, as there are quite a few fiercely supporting Jodha.

Jodha has integrity to everyone but Jalal. It does matter that she uses such bitchy comments about her own husband repeatedly.

Jodha is only emotional and not smart like salima or Ruqu. That milk could have been made by any bandhi and could have caused Ruqu to get in trouble just like she did in the past. I understand her emotions, but she shows them to everyone that DONT deserve it but NOT to Jalal who deserves it the most.

OMG, I cant believe I have to explain this one - let me try. Jalal went thru exact same crisis that Jodha did. He felt betrayal by Jodha and had to take congrats of people for nothing, participate in Jashn. Ofcourse Jodha had reasons to doubt him, but did she ever question how come a person who fulfills every promise just broke this one - never! Jalal on the other hand with so much pain still decided to be patient and give Jodha the benefit of doubt. He reaches out to Salima for help. In the meantime takes all the blame that was put on Jodha and falls in front of everyones eyes. He is tensed about who is doing all this, knows that Hakim has been killed, knows that the Jashn is happening for no reason, but has to pretend and be happy. If this is not called being a shenshah and great human being, I dont know what is?

Unfortunately in those times a king had many wives. But Jalal respected each one of them and this was confirmed even by his mom. Its their right then to decide where they want to spend their night. I also wish that Jalal stops showing interest in Jodha, not because he will break her heart but because the current Jodha tends to break Jalal's heart repeatedly. She literally asked him to die elsewhere in Sukanya's wedding. So, I hope also that he shows no interest in Jodha. Atleast he shows steady progress in understanding people and changing his attitude. Unlike Jodha who is stuck like a broken record on GHRINA.

Jodha should not feel guilty - really? She called Jalal a cheapo who jumps from one rani to dasi to rani for their body. She called Jalal a person who broke the promise of not touching her, which BTW was never given. She called Jalal worse than pashu who takes advantage of people's unconsciousness. Yes, she did it because she did not know the truth. But now that she knows, shouldnt she feel bad that here Jalal was trying to protect her and all she could do was blame him. Never doubt her judgement that she could be wrong when Jalal proved so many other times that he keeps his promises and respects her.

Hope my message didnt sound so harsh, but I wasnt happy with your take on Jodha.

@bold...Its ok Meghana. I beg to differ with your opinion too. 😃 Last time I checked this was a Jodha_akbar show and forum, so we are all allowed to have and respect others opinions.
But we do seem to agree that Jalal needs some distance from Jodha.
He has to be deeply shocked and saddened by his sister's betrayal...he needs clarity on his feelings towards Ruqaiyya...he needs to be grateful to Salima for her council before he can even begin to feel something other than attraction for Jodha.

Its not the case at all Ela and you know it. We all write about Jalal whenever he makes mistakes. The thing though is that he never makes deliberate mistakes. At this stage of their journey though, Jodha's attitude and behavior are uncalled for, specially when she is from a princess family.
