Kangana Ranaut refuses to endorse fairness cream

Kriti Saraswat November 11, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Kangana told HT Cafe, Ever since I was a kid, I have never understood the concept of fairness. Especially, in such a case, as a celebrity, what kind of an example would I be setting for younger people? I have no regrets about turning this offer down. As a public figure, I have responsibilities.'

Though Kangana and a few other celebrities like Ranbir Kapoor, Chitrangada Singh, Anushka Sharma, Esha Gupta have joined the bandwagon of not promoting fairness products, many others have become the face of various such brands which portray that only a fair-skinned person can get ahead in life. Not only do such ads instill a wrong belief but also they also promise unrealistic results of a very dusky person's skin colour changing to a fair one within a few days. And when celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and the likes come to their rescue in endorsing creams with such drastic results, masses of people are fooled into buying them.

When celebrities make us believe that only fair is beautiful, the impact is on a larger scale. In a country already obsessed with fairness, such ads only add to the colour bias. Dark-skinned women and now even men are told that they need to lighten their skin colour to succeed in any endeavour as only people who are of a certain complexion get their dream job or theirdream girl.

It is a refreshing change to see celebrities like Kangana take a stand against such beliefs. My sister is dusky, yet beautiful. If I go ahead and be a part of this campaign, then, in a way, I would be insulting her. If I can't so that to my sister, then now can I do it to the entire nation?' the actress further added.

Another actress who strongly condemned fairness products was Nandita Das who became the face of a campaign Dark is Beautiful' initiated by an organisation called Women of Worth (WOW). They also sent a petition signed by over 20,000 people to Shah Rukh Khan and the fairness product brand he endorses urging them to stop the advertisements.

finally. Everytime I go back to India and see the fair&lovely adverts I feel so bad about myself, the advertisement is just lowering the self esteem of the youth now days. It feels as though India is promoting racisim, that if you're fair then only you'll be able to get somewhere in life, and its sad to see that all the actresses in Bollywood and Tellywood are mostly white fair girls. When, in many cases girls who are dark skinned are much more seen and accepted in Hollywood. Wish India could grow up in maturity already.
