While classics like Andaz Apna Apna, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Sarfarosh are a given, we take a look at the more recent films (not of the Himmatwala variety) that have impressed and awed the audience.
Here are 10 Bollywood Films We Are Glad Were Actually Made:
1. Kahaani
Kahaani was one of the best films we've seen in 2012. A clear winner in terms of plot, acting and screenplay. Vidya Balan wowed our socks off with her impressive performance as Vidya Bagchi and Bob Biswas is a character that we still remember as being incredibly crafted and menacing. One of the biggest reasons we love Kahaani is because it proved that a film can be successful without a male protagonist! More power to you, Vidya!
2. Vicky Donor
We loved Vicky Donor, not only because of Ayushmann Khurrana's acting prowess, his adorable dimples and his sublime voice, but also because it broke the din of brainless Bollywood films like Rowdy Rathore and Son of Sardar. A clear winner, this one.
3. Gangs Of Wasseypur
The first and the second part of this gangster saga were brilliant. A stellar cast and an impressive plot - the Wasseypur saga is now cult. Himmatwala ka, Rowdy Rathore ka, Player Ka...sabka badla liya Faisal ne!
4. English Vinglish
English Vinglish was Sridevi's comeback film but once we watched the film, it didn't seem like this yesteryear diva ever left. Gauri Shinde took a simple story and it rung so beautifully with our lives that we couldn't help feel like we had a little bit of Shashi in all of us.
5. Special 26
This film wasn't pathbreaking but this is what an entertaining film should look like. We were hooked from the get go and the story gripped us till the very end. This is not to say that the film didn't have its flaws but it delivered and how!
6. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
We heard a lot people talking about BMB and how the film glorified Milkha Singh. What we'd like to say to them is, if you can glorify Ra-One in Ra-One, Milkha Singh was grossly under-glorified. Maybe Bhaag Milkha Bhaag could've included a little more running and a little less of Farhan Akhtar and his gorgeous body but the fact remains that it brought a sport, other than cricket, to the limelight and god know we need some of that.
7. Kai Po Che
Let's make it clear, Chetan Bhagat's book, Three Mistakes Of My Life, was no winner but the adaptation to film by Abhishek Kapoor was heart warming. The performances of Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Rajkumar Yadav were moving and the narrative flowed beautifully.
8. Go Goa Gone
Okay, so this film wasn't brilliant or pathbreaking but it delivered laughs, and how! Even though, Saif Ali Khan as Borris' was ridiculous and the climax was far from perfect - this film was a mindless gag fest and we loved it! This film got the horror-comedy genre bang on.
9. Lootera
Powerful performances, a convincing narrative and beautiful music to boot, Lootera had everything a Bollywood period drama was missing to date. Surprisingly, Sonakshi Sinha made us forget all the flaws in this beautiful tragedy.
10. The Lunchbox
We feel in love with The Lunchbox. This film is one of the most beautifully written and directed love stories of all time. This film gives you hope, a deep belief in love and destiny that we all yearn for. Without the uneccessary shennanigans of a Bollywood love story, this film showcases the trials, desires, fears and needs of the common man.
