Storm in the koffee cup

Sanjay Leela Bhansali says he was just being honest when he said Fanaa is a bad film. After all Kunal Kohli called Black bad too (Gawd!)

Black-marked? A still from Fanaa

Sanjay Bhansali's comment on Kunal Kohli and his film Fanaa on Koffee With Karan on Sunday night seems to have got him a lot of attention.

Says a leading young filmmaker, "Bhansali is one of the few people who call a spade a spade. Kunal Kohli has been shooting his mouth off about a lot of filmmakers. It's about time someone pointed out his true worth to Kohli."

Sanjay brushes off the issue. "I said what I felt about him and his film, as he has been saying about me and my work. The questions on Kunal Kohli were in the Rapidfire segment of Karan's show. The way that section is

structured, you end up talking in a way that seems rash and rude. When Gurinder Chaddha and Farah Khan came on Karan's show they said I was an overrated filmmaker. Shobha De called me neurotic. I didn't throw a fit. I stand by what I said. According to me, Fanaa is not a good film. I also said Karan's own Kabhi Alvidaa Naa Kehna could've been better," he says.

Sanjay feels much is being made out of nothing. "Even Kunal had said he didn't like Black. I respect his opinion. When he made a list of Amitabh Bachchan's 10 best films for a TV show, he didn't mention Black. I was okay with that. Fanaa would certainly not figure in my list of favourite films. We all have our preferences. Comments on Koffee With Karan cannot be taken seriously. It's all meant to be
Kunal Kohli
light-hearted and chatty."

He takes a deep breath, "All filmmakers are different. The Anurag Kashyap group of filmmakers may not think much of my cinema. That doesn't mean my cinema is less relevant than theirs, or vice versa. In our cinema, there's room for all."

As for Sanjay Bhansali agreeing to be on the show with Mallika Sherawat, the director shoots back, "Why not? There's no big or small players in the industry. To me, Mallika is as important as any other actress whom I've interacted with. Besides, I would never question Karan about whom he's putting me with or whom he'd call first during recording. It was his choice."

Kunal Kohli reacts
(He promises Sanjay Bhansali a jaadu ki jhappi)

When I saw Koffee with Karan yesterday I was rather amused. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is senior to me and he is a bigger filmmaker and more successful than I am. I wish him all the best for Saawariya as he's working with Ranbir Kapoor who I am extremely fond of. I really hope Saawariya goes on to become a big hit.

But if Sanjay feels I said I didn't like Black or that it was a bad film, then I want to clarify that that's not true at all. All I've ever said about Black is that Amitabh Bachchan and Rani were mind-blowing in it. I have never said I didn't like Black. If Sanjay is saying that Fanaa is a bad film due to something he has heard or imagined I've said about Black, then I can only say that's his call. It shows how he comes to conclusions.

I also don't think whatever is said on Koffee with Karan is always said in jest. It's an interview or a conversation between two big filmmakers and it reflects what they think. Having said that, I'll say I have no ill feelings towards Sanjay and in fact I know what I'm going to do when I see him next: I'm going to go up to him and give him a jaadu ki jhappi.

well..all that they speak on the show just can't be a joke. It makes more sence. Sanjay might not have liked Fanaa...but when I ehard his comment, I was surprised because he said he never watches any movies. For the rest of the movies his comment was "not seen" and abt KANK he might have had an idea as he is coming to Karan's show and so he might ahve watched it to have n idea. So do u think he actually saw Fanaa???
