Ohh I din't know this😲

He did thid because he was deeply disturbed by the partition, so he chose a name to avoid any relious identification--besides, post poets , in those times , do have a Psudaneum for a lyrically balanced and appealing name in their poetry--

Aamir Khan is Aamir Hussein. He is credited thus in Raakh and Holi also.He changed it in QSQT. His father and uncle were Tahir Hussein and Nasir Hussein. Even his cousin Mansoor and brother Faisal use "Khan" instead of Hussein.

Then there are many more. Rajesh Khanna was Jatin Khanna (actually he was named Jatinder, but he changed it to Jatin when he decided to audition for movies. Later he changed it to Rajesh). Twinkle Khanna's real name was Tina. Jeetendra's real name was Ravi Kapoor.
That yesteryear comedian Johny Walker was Badruddin Jamaludin Kazi.

It's said Preity Zinta's original name was Preetam.

Rekha is Bhanurekha Ganesan (name change? Why? To avoid her South Indian identity?)

Kishore Kumar was Abhas Ganguly. Mithun Chakraborty - Gourango Chakraborty. Sanjeev Kumar - Haribhai Zariwala. Dev Anand's real name is said to be Dharam Dev Anand and he dropped Dharam from his name. Sunil Dutt's real name was Balraj. Raaj Kumar (the Jaani guy) - Kulbhushan Pandit. Ashok Kumar - Kumudlal Ganguly.

I don't think reasons to change name were merely astrological. It is a trend now but it wasn't so earlier. Numerology didn't matter much till past decade.

I wonder if there were ideological reasons also.

Did they think their religious or regional identity would make it tough for them to gain acceptance in the industry and with audience?

Some say it was about having a "fancy" name. Does fancy name matter? I find it hollow reasoning!

Sometimes it is claimed they wanted to sound different but how was it being different if all men from actors to singers were calling themselves Kumar at one point of time? (Rajendra Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Kishore Kumar!!).

No I don't think it matter..People's backgrounds, people's flaws, people's name... They can't take away people's success.

In past times, the reason may be religion, they may not want to depict their religion, ,many people drop their surname now, because in a way it shows the caste(esp. in hinduism, so atheists drop their surname) but now..i think people chose it just bcz it sounds stylish(although a star's name sounds stylish always)

He did this because he was disturbed by the Partition or because he wanted to cloak his minority identity back then to get acceptance in industry? Sampooran Singh Kalra to clean shaven Gulzar!

A gulabjamun would taste as yummy...even if called by any other name..👍🏼😆...

I read that Dilip Kr changed his name because back then people had advised him that a muslim actor would not get acceptance in a majorly Hindu country...How much truth is there in it...who knows...but I think it could be true...because people were not so religion tolerant back them...
What was Aamir's name??
And I don't think it would have made any difference if these people stuck with their original names...Rajesh Khanna was also Jatin Khanna...I don't know why he changed it...Jatin IMO is a more trendy name compared to Rajesh which is very common name..
