When I would be in the library till 3/4 am, I would call campus security to drive me to my apartment. My brother always says, better to be safe than sorry.

The one time I was in Uni library and finished at 3am.. it took all my being to not spend the night there instead. We didn't have sleeping bags.. and I needed proper sleep because of a 9am class next morning!! Library is barely ten minute walk away from my accommodation campus. But that night.. it couldn't be further away for me!! I would jump at every small noise.. even leaves rustling.. and look behind me. Although I was alone on the road.. I got so damn freaked out that from that day onwards I always make sure I'm in my room by 11pm when so many students decide to call it a day as well!!!

I have been in the US for almost 14 years now... I sometimes go out in my car at 12:00 a.m. to get a gallon of milk but still... I try to go to a safe walmart at a safe location. am still scared all the time, till I am back and my doors are locked. Even my brother at USC does not go out at night coz LA downtown is pretty bad. The drug dealing issues are rampant. Its not about independence.. its about safety. one of his friends was gunned down next to his apartment in 2009 just for the heck of it. Its not about Independence , its about safety and prudenceand the least common thing common sense !

You misunderstood, I was merely pointing out that the west is liberal not that it's safer.

Downtown LA is well-known to have a mob and drug presence as is Harlem NY, downtown Chicago and Detroit.

I did not misunderstand you 😉. I agree to your point of view 100 % . its way more liberal no doubt about that and I am free to do wear anything (at some places not to wear anything)... coincidently I was born in Bhopal.. though not been to India in years but the last time I remember people still made a big deal about my attire as well as attitude. Those guardians of society who object to our clothing and attitude .. have lust in their eyes most of the time. Big time hypocrites ... because premarital relationship is such a taboo in Indian society though most of them do it .. even the so called protectors of societ the pandits and the maulvi's do the most heinous of crimes... Don't know how and when will things change... but I have never seen or heard of anyone pull of a zoya in real life and not have consequences...
BTW on a lighter note .. I mentioned your post here !

Yeah when i lived in Europe there were definitely things I could and would do that I would never dream of doing in India. You can't even walk down a road here without being objectified. Bus conductors, auto drivers and sometimes even acquaintances. 🤢

@bold - the so called pandits and maulvis are the worst. They are the ones who commit heinous crimes and then invoke the name of god 😡 In real life had Zoya done what she did yesterday, she would have been found in a ditch murdered and worse.
