I am free even after marriage - Kareena Kapoor

Posted by: Smitha Updated: Monday, August 26, 2013, 16:17 [IST]

Kareena Kapoor aka Bebo will be essaying the role of a Reporter for the first time in her upcoming film Satyagraha. Kareena plays an extremely pivotal role in Prakash Jha's next.

The character portrayed by Kareena Kapoor in Satyagraha is an extremely honest and diligent journalist who thinks that it is her duty to make people aware of things happening in the country, even if it means putting her life at risk.

In an exclusive interview with Oneindia reporter Sonika Mishra, Kareena Kapoor said that after essaying the role of a reporter in Satyagraha, her respect for journalists has increased.

Read on to know all that Kareena shared during the interview on the personal and professional front...

Tell us something about your character in Satyagraha. After playing the role of a journalist in the film, has your opinion regarding them changed in any manner? Do you feel that it is wrong on the part of the journalists to publish matters related to an actors' personal life?

I play a very strong role in the film ...of that of a journalist who is a firm believer of 'truth'. I am aware that when you are a journalist, a sense of responsibility automatically comes in...especially among those journalists who truthfully and honestly do their job of 'Reporting'. In the film, I don't play an Entertainment Journalist. However, I understand that they are only doing their job. What they write about our personal life and the various methods they adopt to get to know them is out of compulsion as they don't have a choice. I am not sure about other stars, but we completely support journalists.

If you were a journalist in real life and were to interview any Bollywood personality, who would it be?

I would definitely NOT be interested in interviewing any Bollywood personality because so much has been written about them by you journalists that everything about them has become 'boring'! But yes, if I were a journalist in 'real' life, I would have liked to interview a Hollywood star...especially Brad Pitt. By being a journalist, I would have liked to do some interesting interviews.

Satyagraha is your first film after your marriage with Saif Ali Khan. Though this may seem like a very common question, tell us whether you feel any different from how you felt before marriage?

I don't feel or see any difference. When I go to the sets, everything seems just the way it used to be. I am the same 'Kareena' that I used to be and Saif too remains the same guy that I knew before marriage. Our life is just the same even after marriage. When an actress gets married, the media's opinion about her changes. I get surprised when people ask me how I feel after marriage. Saif and I were in love and got married. But nothing has changed after that.

Most girls complain that their husbands are not the same and have changed after marriage. Did you notice any such change in Saif's demeanour after marriage?

Saif is the same what he used to be while we were dating. Even today, I feel the same when we are together. Both Saif and I haven't changed post marriage. Perhaps that's the reason why we still love and understand each other. I pray that Saif doesn't change in future too.

A lot of responsibilities you did not expect come in after marriage. Do you also feel that you are surrounded by too many responsibilities?

Since childhood, I have ben thrust with a lot of responsibilities. First I had responsibilities of my mom and dad and then I had the responsibility of my sister Karisma Kapoor. Now I have responsibility of Saif on my shoulders. Saif is a mature man of 43 and has children. So, he is a responsible person anyways. Hence I don't face any problem with him nor do I feel overburdened by responsibilities since my priority has always been my family and career. I have always been balancing by personal and professional life.

Have you encountered any problems balancing love and career?

There is absolutely no connection between love and career. I have no idea why people mix up and ask how love has affected my career! Love remains with you in some form or the other. When you love your parents, the 'love' doesn't interfere with your career. Love is like breathing...I love my mom and my family, but I work as well! I feel free even though I 'had' and still 'have' responsibilities on my shoulders.

You have worked with Amitabh Bachchan for the third time. How was your experience working with Amitabhji?

We have worked together in two films - Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum and Dev. It was a unique and wonderful experience working with him in these two films. It's not only Amitabh Bachchan...I also enjoyed working with other starcast of the film that includes Ajay Devgn, Irfaan Khan and Manoj Bajpai. I had a good rapport with all of them during the making of the film.

Do you think South Indian Cinema is on par with Bollywood films? Do you have any plans to work in South Cinema?

I wish that we stop seeing each language film individually and start viewing all films from a global angle. However, as far as I am concerned, I am not familiar with South Indian languages and hence do not want to venture into South cinema as of now. Though I have got a few offers from the South industry, I have refused all of them since I do not speak or understand the language. If I take up those films, then I'll have to by-heart the dialogues and won't be able to give the required expressions.

You and Ranbir Kapoor have never worked together. Why is it so?

'Kapoors' are the finest actors in the Bollywood film industry and so I feel that we must work together. However, we haven't come across any such opportunity so far. I hope we get the chance to work together in the future.

Do you also feel that movies inspire and influence people and the way they think?

We are actors and our job is to entertain. Through Satyagraha, we don't intend to change people's thinking. Satyagraha is a film in which you will find many inspiring thoughts. All said and done, the film is made mainly to entertain people.

Kareena on Crimes Against Women, appearance in Happy Ending

Kareena for Times - More on women and crimes

"The way people are fighting for their rights is something that is the undercurrent of Satagraha" - Kareena

Kareena Kapoor certainly has played a myriad of characters over her fabulous career. With each new role she shows another side of her talent and impresses fans all the more. She has done many an amazing character in your classic Bollywood song and dance romance that we love (think Geet of Jab We Met) and we have also seen her shine in the dramatic roles as well like Dolly in Omkara and so many more.

For Prakash Jhas Satyagraha, the actress once again takes on a more dramatic avatar, this time as hard-hitting journalist Yasmin. It was the character and the chance to work with the esteemed director, Kareena tells us, that made her want to take part in the film. See what else she told us in our quick but fabulous chat on all things Satyagraha!

What was it about this film that made you say yes?

Ive always wanted to work with Prakash Jha. Prakash ji doesnt do the typical run of the mill kind of movies that are commercial potboilers. I think every actor has that that sometimes you want to do films which are slightly docu stuff, slightly more hard hitting, slightly more real and topical. Ive done a lot of films that are commercial and have song and dance and that is a very strong part of me and which will always be there, but I also like to do films which are not typically box office commercial films. Ive always been an actor that will do slightly different kind of roles.

Tell us about your character in the film, Yasmin.

I play the role of a journalist. Shes a woman with utmost integrity, somebody who is very committed to her job. She is a journalist who will do anything for her report in terms of determination, dedication. She is quite hard hitting, she doesnt have time for love or romance. Its only about getting her story filed, working on the right causes, whether its the Prime Minister of the country or whether it is any sort of politician. It is about supporting the right story. It sounded interesting and it sounded like something I wanted to do. Ive never played a journalist before. When Prakash ji approached me I was like I want to definitely do it.

There have been a lot of stories about what this is film is about, what would you say is the story of the film?

I think the story is definitely about anti-corruption but it also is a story about a father and his son, its about two brothers, its about a man-woman relationship that is not exactly a typical man-woman romancing behind the trees and singing songs on top of a hill. Its about relationships and thats what makes it quite different and also interesting.

Tell us about working with Mr. Prakash Jha.

Prakash jis like a one-man show. Hes like an army. We shot the entire film in Bhopal. Ive never seen something like this before. The way he ran it was like he was literally running the entire city. He has taken over the entire city and we had people playing background actors from the local people doing that because Prakash ji had trained them 6 months prior. So his kind of dedication to the kind of films he makes is absolutely amazing. Beside which I think he has the right balance making drama entertaining and if it has a message at the end of it, its great. I mean we are not here to preach out a message on something. I am not a politician. We are actors. But if it has a message at the end of it, its great! If it touches a cord with the audience then even greater. And I think thats what Prakash ji has had in most of his films. I think hes a great person as well. Hes been wonderful to me and I hope to work with him again.

What do you think Yasmin would ask you?

Well, the only thing different between Yasmin and me is you know I have time to love and in the film Yasmin doesnt have any time for love. Kind of totally involved in her work. I think love fuels you and gives you the energy to work. But Yasmin is doesnt have that and doesnt see that. I always have that. So Yasmin would probably ask me that that how I do it, How I do work and love.

What do you think audiences will take away with them after they see this film?

It touches you in every aspect. It has a soulful message of relationships behind it but at the same time a strong message of what is happening amongst the youth of our country. The way people are fighting for their rights is something that is the undercurrent of this film.

You have fans all over the world, what does their support mean to you?

I think it means that no matter what theyve always been loyal to me. Ive been very, very lucky. I think every actor builds their fan base. Over the years some films do well, some films dont. They are like die-hard fans to a certain actor because they just recognize the talent and recognize and respect that and their love for me turns to respect and vice versa and I think thats worth having.

What do you have coming up next?

After Satyagraha, in November around the 22nd, we have a film with Imran Khan, which is called Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. Its much more lighter romantic kind of movie. Its quite romantic and cool at the same time. Its great because I loved working with Imran in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. I think it was one of my most special films in my career. I think this one is too.

Along with Kareena, Satyagraha boasts an incredible cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal, and Manoj Bajpayee and it hits theaters on Friday August 30th!

Satyagraha is the story of a son who yearns for a father. Of a father, who grieves for his lost son. Of a young woman who fights so hard with life that she has forgotten to love. Of an ambitious rabble-rouser, for whom action is the knee-jerk mantra.

It is the story of how these four discover one another, and come together to raise hell, shaking the powers that be to their very roots!

But, Satyagraha is also the story of an influential power-hungry despot who will stop at nothing to destroy them.

Satyagraha- The revolution has begun!

Just posting most Kareena related articles here

"Kareena is dependable & reliable" - Soha Ali Khan

Excerpts from Soha Ali Khan's interview

How have things changed since Saif got married?
They (Saif and Kareena Kapoor) were together for five years before they got married, so I can't say shaadi ke baad yeh changes aa gaye hai (these are the changes that have come about post the wedding). They make for a great couple. She is very supportive too, for instance when it comes to things like commitment, if Kareena says that she will be somewhere, she'll be there. If bhai (Saif) says he will be there, you have no idea whether he will come or not (laughs). It's useful to have her (Kareena) around. She is far more dependable and reliable.

Has she settled in to the family completely now?
Kareena is great fun and comfortable in her own skin. Her priorities have always been her relationships and work, and I respect that.
