This week BollyCurry brings to you a Retro Review of a movie that enlightens the core of every Bolly-fanatic's heart - Maine Pyar Kiya. The movie explored the journey of two friends of the opposite gender who eventually fall in love, however much they initially resist it, and also set the benchmark for future films set around the same theme.
Maine Pyar Kiya, released on 29 December, 1989, was directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya and produced by Tarachand Barjatya under the Rajshri Productions banner. The star-cast included Salman Khan, Bhagyashree, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Lakshmikant Berde, Mohnish Behl and many more supporting members. The film marked the debut of one of the most popular actors of Bollywood, Salman Khan. It was also the debut of Bhagyashree who sadly did not garner much in the industry despite the successful start.
The story of the film is about about two childhood friends, Kishan (Rajeev Verma) and Karan (Alok Nath) who grow up to be a successful businessman and an ordinary mechanic respectively. Leaving the country for work, Karan requests Kishan to let his daughter Suman (Bhagyashree) live at the latter's house whereby she meets Kishan's son, Prem (Salman Khan), and the two become best friends. Gradually, the duo fall in love with the blessing of Prem's mother, Kaushalya (Reema Lagoo). However, Kishan comprehends the relationship, absconding it as a method to trap his son for his money. He insults Karan and Suman and throws them out of his house. The movie then proceeds as to how Prem convinces their families of his true love. Ranjeet (Ajit Vachani), Kishan's business partner-cum-friend; Seema (Parvin Dastur), Ranjeet's daughter who interested in Prem; and Jeevan (Mohnish Behl), Seema's cousin, all act as an opposing force towards Prem and Suman's relationship.
The movie was nominated for a total of 12 Filmfare awards that year, out of which it won six: Best Film, Best Male Debut, Best Female Debut, Best Music Director, Best Male Playback Singer and Best Lyricist.

Maine Pyar Kiya was highest selling album of 1980's
And it's considered in top 5 albums of all time in Bollywood along with Barsaat (1949), Mugal-E-Aazam, Awaara and Aashiqui
The song - Dil Deewana topped all the charts that year with Kabootar Jaa, Aaya Mausam, Aaja Shaam Hone Aayi, Aate Jaate and MPK title song being a rage all over. But Mere Rang Mein, became Salman's one of the most iconic song
