For sure it exists...otherwise those MILs would not have raked in the TRPs for their shows!

Thanks for sharing.
There are as many different types of MIL as there are people and situations out there. Looking at my own grandmother's one was a complete control freak...widowed at a young age with young children she took the controlling route so that no one could point a finger at her family and also I'm sure without the security of a husband to keep her son's in her control. She mellowed with age but made life miserable for everyone concerned for a long time. The other was the sweetest women God ever made and her DIL took full advantage of that. I wonder if they would have been different in each others situations...perhaps.
AS for TV MIL's, there are probably MIL's in real life who are worse and most better but then shows need dramatic licence too and that's when they seem to go too far. Personally I have met a woman who is similar to the way UB was portrayed initially.

I live in a western country and come from a different society to India. But even I have heard of and seen even western mil's who are a nightmare to deal with!

I work with a women who really doesn't like her MIL. They don't live together, but she finds her overbearing.

Personally I am blessed with a good MIL who loves me and treats me like a daughter. But she can be a pain sometimes coz she is a worry wort and always worrying about something and telling everyone what is good for them! But she is a good person, so I ignore some of her difficult traits as the good outweighs the bad!

But I do agree with Supriya and Uthkarsha that the Saas they show on Indian tv is a bit too much on the overbearing side. Too negative. I don't think that encouraging such behaviour by glorifying it is the right way to go.
