PART - 3: SNOWFALL...

There shall be showers of blessing... This is the promise of love...
There shall be seasons refreshing... Sent from the Savior above...

PART - A:

"Gunjan, my child" a gentle touch on her shoulder made Gunjan turn back her eyes from the Christmas tree to the elderly woman whom she has been waiting for...

"Sister Marian" Gunjan called her and soon she was embracing her tightly with tearful eyes...

"It's your birthday my child; the happiest day in your life... You should be smiling dear and not cry" Sister Marian ran her fingers through her hairs in affection trying to quieten her...

"I wish you all the happiness my child... God bless you" She cupped her face and kissed Gunjan's forehead with affection...

"I have something to tell you Sister Marian" Gunjan said holding her hands tightly wasting no time... She had to share it with Sister Marian...

"Yes dear" Sister Marian responded... "Come, let's have a seat at first"...

"Last night I had the same bad dream once again about Dia" Gunjan said quietly as they sat on a bench near the Christmas tree...

Sister Marian became silent hearing those words from Gunjan... Poor child, why she had to face all these again and again... Only Christ knows what has been stored for her future life... She sighed...

"And what was this dream all about Gunjan??" Sister Marian wanted to know...

"I was here Sister Marian; in the Church, early in the morning... No one else was there and everything was calm and quiet" Gunjan started to narrate her dream...

"I was praying in the hall when Dia appeared... She was still the same, young and beautiful and lively" Gunjan hold on to Sister Marian's hand tightly and continued...

"I asked her to come with me and join me in the prayer, but she didn't listened to me and started running back" Gunjan's voice started to tremble and her grip on Sister Marian's hand tightened...

"Dia asked me to catch her and I pursue her, but then..." Gunjan's eyes were on the verge of tears once again when she stopped...

"Then what child??" Sister Marian asked with concern...

Gunjan closed her eyes and reminiscence her dream...

"Come on Pari, catch me if you can"... Dia shouted playfully and ran faster towards the view point edge...

Gunjan took fast steps towards Dia when she found her standing on the verge of the blank edge facing her...

"Come on Pari, why do you stop??" Dia called out Gunjan and took a step back... "Catch me"...

"Gunjan" Sister Marian wiped out her tears and took her in a warm embrace to comfort her...

"Dia fell from the cliff... I tried so much to save her but failed" Gunjan hugged her tightly and cried her heart out...

"Quiet child, it's just a dream... Dia had left a long ago and it was an accident... You have no hands in it Gunjan" Sister Marian pulled Gunjan in a warm embrace consoling her...

****************

Samrat parked his car a little far away from the Church and covered his head with the jacket hood before stepping out of the car... Surely he doesn't want anyone to recognize him at this moment...

11.20 pm he checked the time in his watch... What if she is not here?? What if she at home with his Mum and Ranvijay?? After all it is too late at night...

But something told him in his heart that she is here... Gunjan is here and he would definitely meet her this time...

But what will he say to her?? That he had wanted to meet her on her birthday?? That Samrat Shergill; who has always been known as hard core professionals had cancelled one hour of his scheduled programme without any care only to meet Gunjan...

What will he say to Gunjan when he himself had no idea why all of a sudden he was becoming so desperate to meet Gunjan on her birthday after so many years?

The same Gunjan who he had accused once being the reason of his father's death, his Candy's death... The same Gunjan who Samrat has asked to stay away from him once...

He had never thought life would be so hollow without her presence... It was difficult when his Candy had left him, but never in his dream had he thought that it would become impossible when Gunjan had walked out from his life...

Samrat walked towards the Church with all the bitter memories... Everyone was enjoying the night, everyone was happy and content tonight... But in the midst of all this bright unfamiliar faces Samrat was searching for a single sweet familiar face that he knew would be quiet and lonely like him...

Samrat's pace stopped suddenly reaching near the much known Christmas tree which was decorated with lights and colourful bells and stars... He had expected Gunjan to be near the Christmas tree where she used to stand still as a child looking at it during every Christmas...

But tonight she was nowhere to be seen beside the Christmas tree... Instead he found Sister Marian sitting on the bench near the Christmas tree, all alone...

Samrat's eyes checked over the whole place, she was nowhere... Does that mean she had left or she wasn't there at all?? It was already 11.30 pm and only half an hour left for the day to end... But what could be the reason, Samrat cannot leave from the place without meeting Sister Marian...

"Sister Marian" Samrat walked to her and called out her calmly...

Sister Marian turned towards the other side to find a stranger covered in hoods approaching her... But his voice seems familiar, as if she was hearing this voice after so many years...

"Do I know you my child?? Your voice seems so familiar" Sister Marian asked the stranger...

"Off course you do know me Sister Marian" The stranger replied and took his seat beside her and took off the hood that was hiding his face so long...

"Good Lord" Sister Marian exclaimed "You are my boy Samrat"... She cupped his face with her wrinkled hands and kissed on Samrat's forehead in affection...

"It's been five years since I have seen you the last time and you have grown up so much into a man" Sister Marian could not control her tears...

"You too have changed so much Sister Marian within these years... And you are looking more beautiful with these silver white hairs and creased wrinkles" Samrat replied with a smile wiping out her tears...

"I am so glad that you have returned after so many days... Indira must have been very happy too that you are back in your home" Sister Marian speaks her heart out...

"I had a show here tonight Sister Marian, and that's why I had come... I will be leaving again by tomorrow and that's why I've cut off one hour of my show only to meet you" Samrat replied calmly...

"You are not going to stay??" the old lady asked in hurtful tone...

"I can't Sister Marian; even how much I try to stay back, all the painful memories keeps haunting me... And staying under the same roof with the reason of all these pains is almost impossible"...

"Samrat, do you mean Gunjan!!" Sister Marian was left with utter shock at his words... "Do you still hold Gunjan responsible for what had happened in the past??"

Samrat remained silent and his silence speaks for him that he still believes Gunjan responsible for his father and Dia's death...

"Why are you doing this with Gunjan??" Sister Marian asked Samrat "Why are you hurting her so much for something that was never in her hand??"

"Sister Marian, do you really believe that Gunjan has nothing to do with Candy's death??" Samrat got up from the bench restlessly... "Do you honestly believe that Gunjan had nothing to do with my father's death??"

"In both the situation Gunjan could have avoided the deaths to occur, but she didn't... She was more concerned about herself that no matter what she will attend my shows"...

"She only cared for what she wanted and nothing else" Samrat concluded...

"Is that what you think of her Samrat that Gunjan is self centred?? If that is so then why is she away from you for the last five years??" Sister Marian asked...

"Why does she still write songs for you but never takes any credit of them??"

"Why does she never touch the money that you sent her as a salary for her works on herself and donates all of it in the orphan house where she had once lived??"

"And if Gunjan is really at fault then why are you here Samrat leaving your show?? You are not here to meet me child and I can see that... You are sitting here with me but your eyes are searching someone else"...

Samrat could not answer any of it... Every bit of Sister Marian's words was true... It was true that all the lyrics of the music that he composes were written by Gunjan...

It was true that every time Gunjan comes to Mumbai only for him even after whatever he had said and accused her of... It was true that whenever she comes to Mumbai, Gunjan had always made it sure not to face Samrat and stay away from him knowing that it hurts him...

It was true that since last five years Samrat had always asked Benji to pay her a handsome amount of sum so that Samrat doesn't have to remain under the impression that she is doing a favour on him... And Gunjan had never used a single penny from that sum for herself... She had always donated it in the orphan house...

Nothing about Gunjan was hidden from Samrat... How much he tried to ignore her, forget her, the silence in her has smitten Samrat like hell...

And he knew that Sister Marian was absolutely right to conclude that he was indeed there to meet Gunjan on the pretext of meeting her...

Seeing Samrat stood there speechless without answering Sister Marian holds his hand and asked him to seat beside her...

"You know son, there is something known as destiny and it is inevitable and unavoidable... Blaming Gunjan for what was predestined won't bring back Dia... Truths are sometimes harsh and painful son, face it and they will heal your loneliness"...

Samrat remained silent at those words... Not that he doesn't want to believe them but somewhere deep down in his heart Samrat was fighting his inner turmoil... He wanted to believe that Gunjan was not at fault but at the same time he couldn't deny that she was the reason behind his Candy's death...

The big Church clock that was striking 11.45 pm caught Samrat's attention... Only fifteen minutes left to midnight... Where was Gunjan??

"She is in the prayer hall" Sister Marian said as if reading the thoughts of his mind...

But Samrat stood still rooted to the ground... So long he has been desperate and impatient to meet Gunjan, but now that his entire route to her was clear Samrat felt blank and hesitation started to subdue him...

"Samrat, there's one thing you don't know about Gunjan" Sister Marian said once again sensing his silence... "Gunjan is having nightmares from the last five years since you have accused her of Dia's death"...

Samrat was left completely shocked and startled at this piece of news which he has been totally unaware of...

"You should go to her son, before it's too late"... Sister Marian uttered the irrevocable truth...

PART -B:

"Gunjan" she was in the prayer hall lighting the candle when his voice called out her name after five years...

For a moment it had seemed like a dream when Gunjan had turned back and found him standing within a little distance... But that dream soon turned into reality when he walked up to her and actually hugged her...

"I have missed you so much all these years" he said after breaking the hug... "Many happy returns of the day Pari"...

"Ranvijay!!" A little smile played on her lips mixed with a tinge of surprise seeing her childhood friend before her after so many years...

"Thankfully after looking for you for almost six hours I found you at last before the day end, all thanks to Ira aunty" Ranvijay said in his usual chirpy style...

"You were looking for me for the last six hours??" Gunjan looked perplexed...

"Yes, I was waiting for you in the stadium... But then I guess that everything I had heard about you and Samrat were true" Ranvijay replied thoroughly observing every expression that showed up on Gunjan's face...

But there was perfect silence from her side... No grief, not a drop of tear was seen on her angelic face; instead a faint smile rose at the corner of her curvy lips as if she had accepted her fate...

"Let's not talk about the past Ranvijay... You have returned after so many years that too on my birthday, so where is my birthday gift??" Gunjan tried to be cheerful as she had promised to the two loving women who had always loved and cared for her...

"They are all set and waiting for you Madame" Ranvijay bowed and addressed her in a most stylish way which definitely brought the glowing smile of Gunjan back on her face...

"So shall we leave or you are planning to stay here tonight" Ranvijay stretched his palm towards Gunjan which she accepted with a smile and holding each other's hand the two friends started to walk...

"This is just like our childhood days" Gunjan said pointing out their holding hands while they were coming out from the prayer hall... "I still remember how we use to hold each other's hand and swing them while coming out of this same prayer hall every Sunday"...

"And I still remember how Samrat used to fight with me whenever I held your hand" Ranvijay replied laughing remembering those lovely days... "He always felt so jealous if anyone else except him holds his best friend's hand"

"Samrat won't feel jealous anymore Ranvijay, he won't care now... And I am no more his best friend" Gunjan stopped all of a sudden at the entrance of the prayer hall and said those words more to herself than to Ranvijay...

"You ok Pari??" Ranvijay asked hearing this sudden monologue from Gunjan...

"Yes, I am fine, let's go" Gunjan replied...

They were about to leave when a person entered the prayer hall and stopped at the entrance before Gunjan and Ranvijay... His face was covered with the hood of his posh jacket but his eyes were fixed soon at the holding hands of the two people before him...

There was something similar yet unusual in the features of the stranger that Gunjan felt a cold sensation at his present... The stranger seems so familiar...

"Excuse me bro, you are blocking our way" Ranvijay said...

"Seems like you are in a hurry" Samrat Shergill, the familiar stranger took off his hood with both his hands letting all the fearful thoughts of Gunjan turned into reality...

He was actually standing there before her, after five long years... After the fretful day when he had lost his father and she had lost the man who was like a father figure to her...

She was facing him after the fretful day when he had finally asked her to get out of his life...

Gunjan as a child had always let go of Ranvijay's hand only because her best friend Samrat didn't liked it...

But things had changed and tonight Gunjan's grip tightened even more on Ranvijay's palm...

"Samrat!! You are here" Ranvijay asked him not so surprised as he felt Gunjan clutching his hand tightly...

"Yeh, I am here to meet Sister Marian" Samrat replied still casting his eyes over their holding hands which Ranvijay definitely didn't miss...

"Coming back to this place after a pretty long time how can I not meet the woman who has always been so important in my life??"...

"That reminds me of meeting her too... Excuse me guys, I will see you later..." Ranvijay freed his hand and went in search for Sister Marian leaving the two lost friends behind to share some moments... Gunjan attempted to stop him not wanting to be left alone with Samrat but Ranvijay was too fast to leave...

"Enjoying your day with special friends??" Samrat asked Gunjan after Ranvijay left the place...

The prayer hall was still filled up with so many peoples, visitors and nuns worshipping or lighting candles or simply visiting... But an eerie silence prevailed over the whole place...

So many people gathered up together, so many lighted candles had lit the whole place making a warm and inside the prayer hall... But some chilled cold feelings succumbed over Gunjan...

"You, you must be here for praying... I, I should leave then" Gunjan managed to say somehow in a low voice and left hastily passing aside Samrat...

Gunjan was already trembling while coming down from the Church stairs wrapping both her hands around herself...

She has been facing Samrat's indifference and rude attitude since Dia's death and finally his wrath the day he lost his father... Five years she had stayed away from him...

Five years... After five long years he was standing before her once again that too on her birthday... She had managed to stay from his sight in the house since the last night when he was back in Darjeeling; in his home...

Gunjan surely doesn't have the courage to face his heart stabbing words once again... All she wants is to run away, run away far from him as much as she could...

"Gunjan" Samrat's voice from behind made Gunjan halt her steps on the stairs...

Her hands wrapped around herself more tightly and clutched onto her jacket... Closing her eyes tightly and holding her breathe Gunjan could feel Samrat approaching her...

"Avoiding me or ignoring me??" Samrat stopped beside her and noticed Gunjan trembling with her eyes closed...

She was wearing a milky white knee length anarkali suit and cyan jacket on it... Her hairs open as always and they were covered with the white stole to prevent the chilled winds...

No additional makeup or jewellery, only a simple pearl stud in her ears that was peeping from her hairs... Simple yet special as ever, she was standing before him after five long years...

"None... I was just leaving... Ira aunty must be waiting, it's too late now" Gunjan opened her eyes composing herself and replied in her usual soft calm voice turning towards Samrat...

"Happy Birthday" Samrat uttered the two words calmly, trying not to show any sorts of emotions and extended his hands towards Gunjan...

A white silky soft piece of something like cotton ball fell out of nowhere as Gunjan's surprised eyes met with Samrat's and she reached out her hand slowly to Samrat's hand accepting the long lost birthday wish...

Snowfall on Christmas Night in Darjeeling is rare, but that night miracle happened...

Small soft white pieces of snow started showering everywhere from the sky around them as Samrat and Gunjan stood there hand in hand staring at the sky...
