PART – 4: RHODODENDRON...
PART - A:
Gunjan was standing on the stone bridge of Rock Garden, watching the Summer Falls...
This place has always been a great tourist attraction spot of Darjeeling... But in an early chilled December morning the place was still empty and quiet and peaceful...
Only the continuous vigorous buzzing sound of the waterfalls was disturbing the silence of the place...
Gunjan was standing very close to the waterfalls closing her eyes enjoying each and every sprinkle on her face...
Samrat and Ranvijay were standing a bit far away at the Rock Garden terrace... Both of them busy with their cameras clicking the scenic beauty of early rays of sunshine spreading over green hills and melting snow over the trees...
"But where is Dia!!" Gunjan wondered... She was nowhere to be seen...
Gunjan became worried all of a sudden for Dia... She loves adventures and discovering new things was a passion of her...
Gunjan stared everywhere till her eyes could see, but no glimpse of Dia was to be seen...
"Pari, looking out for me??" Came a chirpy playful voice from the above making Gunjan shuddered and turn towards the source of the voice...
And there stood Dia on the top railings of the Rock Garden from where the snowy hilly areas and mist covered mountains were visible clearly...
"Dia, what are you doing up there all alone?? Come down" Gunjan shouted on top of her voice...
"Come up here Pari, I have a surprise for you" Dia replied back instead of coming down...
Gunjan turned back towards Samrat and Ranvijay to call them but Dia's voice stopped her once again...
"Leave them Pari... I don't want the boys to come... It would be only mine and yours secret"...
Gunjan knew very well she had but no choice than follow her... Dia was always the wild one of the two sisters... When she wants something, she always gets it... And Gunjan was her dear little precious doll...
Reaching onto the top railings Gunjan could sense a mischievous smile at the corner of her lips and a twinkle in Dia's light blue eyes... This was an indication of her new discovery and her eagerness to share it with Gunjan...
"I have something to show you, come with me" Dia announced excitedly as expected and started running towards the direction of her new found surprise for Gunjan leaving no choice for her calm little sister to run after her...
"Wait Dia, don't run so fast" Gunjan caught hold of her breath from behind after walking up the hilly paths for ten minutes...
"Silly you... How you can come with me if you stop there??" Dia complained turning back towards Gunjan who was still five hands distance away...
"Dia, I'm so tired running... I can't come up with you anymore"... Gunjan felt down on her knees exhausted...
"Come on Pari, I'm sure you can come up with me... We are almost there"... Dia called out from the cliff...
Gunjan reached the cliff only to find herself standing in the mixed of rainbow coloured rhododendrons... There were white, pink, red, yellow, orange and lavender peeping from the corner of the rocks and bushes...
The two teenage girls stood there on the flower spread cliff watching the snowy peak of Kanchenjunga covered in mists...
"Pari, you won't say anything about this place to Sammy or RV... Would you??" Dia asked Gunjan...
"But why not Dia??... It is such a beautiful place and Samrat and Ranvijay would love this place too" Gunjan tried to convince Dia being upset at the thought of hiding something from Samrat...
"This is our secret hideout Pari and no one else should know about it... Cross your heart" Dia said in an utter possessive tone making Gunjan cross her heart... She could never say no to Dia regarding anything...
"You know Pari, there is a flower valley down there" Dia pointed out towards the opposite side of the way they had climbed up...
"I think we should find a way to reach there" Dia suggested excitedly and ran towards the edge of the cliff when the mists covered the whole place...
"Dia" Gunjan called out but no one responded...
Running towards the way she went Gunjan found Dia standing at the edge of the cliff stretching a hand towards her...
"Come with me Pari, don't be afraid"... She called out and stepped behind...
"Diaaa" Gunjan screamed out...
"Pari"...
"Pari beta"...
Ranvijay and Ira aunty were calling out her repeatedly while knocking hard on her bedroom door...
"Open the door beta" Ira auntie's voice she could hear from the other side of the door...
But Gunjan was in no position to get up and open the door for them... She was sweating furiously even on a chilled night...
"What happened??" Samrat asked coming out hearing his mother and RV's voice outside Gunjan's room...
"What's wrong with this girl??" Samrat couldn't help wonder hearing everything from RV... "Does she really love to make peoples around her hell worried for her??"
"Samrat, you should probably go back to your room, we are here to take care for Pari" Ranvijay retorted...
"Yeah off course I can see that" Samrat replied turning towards his mother and left the place...
"Ira aunty" Gunjan opened the door sensing Samrat had already left for his room... "I'm fine, really... You should too take some sleep... I will be fine"... She went on convincing her Ira aunty knowing Samrat did not appreciate his mother's worries for this orphan girl... After all she was the reason he had lost everything...
"I am sure you will be beta" Ira aunty sighed...

Samrat stood at the music room door watching Gunjan playing their favourite song on the piano oblivious of his presence in the same room...
The music room inside the Shergill Mansion was like a mini studio... So Gunjan singing at this late hour in the night would not rob anyone from their sleep until they want to...
Ira aunty and Ranvijay had gone back to sleep after being assured from Gunjan that she was indeed fine... But Samrat was the restless soul devoid of sleep since he heard Gunjan screamed out calling Dia's name...
What was with this one girl that drives him crazy??...
Her smile...
Her tears...
Her words...
Her silence...
Her concern...
Her worries...
Everything related to her bothered him... Staying under the same roof with her had tortured him... And staying away from her without even a glimpse was like a curse in his life...
"Samrat, there's one thing you don't know about Gunjan... She is having nightmares from the last five years since you have accused her of Dia's death"...
Sister Marian's words echoed in his mind...
"So, it is true then?? This nightmare thing??" Samrat's sudden voice from behind made her rise abruptly...
This would be the second time after the last night in the Church when he surprised her with his sudden appearance...
"Samrat!! You are here!! At this hour!!"
"It's my house Gunjan, I can go wherever I want to at any hour" Samrat replied reminding Gunjan once again that she never belonged there...
Gunjan lowered her face at his words... "I know this is your house Samrat, I just wanted to know if I disturbed you"...
"You have been disturbing me since the last five years... What more do you want Gunjan??" Samrat could not control his sudden outburst of anger anymore as he clutched onto Gunjan's arm and pushed her along pinning her at the large glass window behind...
"Nothing... I want nothing" Gunjan's voice trembled as she found herself pinned on the glass windowpane...
What was with this one girl that drives him crazy, Samrat couldn't help wonder...
Her doe like hazel eyes...
Her quivering pink lips...
Her dark night like hairs...
Her flawless snow white skin...
Samrat could not take it anymore and turned back his face from his best friend's... Leaving her near the window Samrat walked back and stopped near the piano...
Something on the piano dashboard drew his attention... A bouquet of colourful rhododendrons...
"You still love Rhododendrons??" Samrat asked picking up the rainbow coloured flower bunch in his hand...
"Dia loved them" Gunjan replied slowly...
"You need not tell me what Candy loved... I knew her better than you" Samrat cut her off before she could say any further...
"You were the one who always brought this, God knows from where" Samrat retorted angrily throwing the flower bunch back on the dashboard and turned back to leave...
"Samrat" Gunjan called him before he could walk out... "There's something I want to tell you"...
"You remember the first time the four of us visited Rock Garden?? Me and Dia were missing from there and you and Ranvijay were so worried searching for us"...
"Dia had found this place, the cliff of the Summer Falls... It was filled with Rhododendrons, our secret hideout"...
"Dia never wanted me to share this with you but I think you should too see the place once" Gunjan left the music room leaving behind a perplexed Samrat tied in his web of thoughts...

PART - B continues...
"Yes Benji, that's what I'm talking about"
...
"If he wants me to perform in his event; he should follow my each and every condition"
...
"Then let him just go to hell"
...
"Don't waste your time Benji"
...
"Samrat Shergill doesn't really care about anything"
Samrat disconnected the phone and threw it on his bed fuming... Worthless people, they had no slight idea what takes to make Samrat Shergill perform in an event...
How could even some bunch of idiots think to buy Samrat Shergill offering him an enormous sum of money and ask him to sing some petty track for their useless event!!
* knock knock
The two knocks on the door added fuel on fire... Why can't anyone let him leave in peace??... Sure it was the house maid who serves breakfast every morning...
"Go away, I don't need anything" he screamed and went back with his packing stuff...
But instead of leaving Samrat heard the clicking sound of the door latch as the person outside opened it...
"Are you ok Samrat??" Indira Shergill entered her son's room...
"Yes Mum" Samrat tried to cool down seeing his mother in his room...
"So, you are leaving??"
"It was already settled Mum" Samrat replied still busy packing...
"Samrat you returned after five long years and now you are leaving... Can't you stay back for some few more days??" She asked her son raising some hope...
"Why do you want me here when you have your precious Pari to look after you??" Came the curt reply from Samrat...
She knew it was pointless talking to her stubborn son... He was still living in the past and fighting with the present...
-Flashback-
"Samrat, what have you told Pari?? Why is she leaving??" Indira Shergill stormed into his son's room...
"I asked her to stay away from me and my close people" Samrat replied unmoving while his glance was stuck at the fireplace...
"I knew it... Only you could say something so hurtful to that poor girl for nothing...So, tell me Samrat what was it this time??" Indira Shergill demanded her son...
"For nothing??" Samrat roared back like a wounded lion... "You think Dad's death is nothing??"
"How come Pari has anything to do with Shekhar's death??" She asked being clueless what her son was saying... "You are not blaming Pari for Shekhar's death!! Are you??"
"Then who is to be blamed if not she" Tears brimmed in Samrat's eyes... "How could she be so selfish to leave Dad alone knowing he was discharged from the hospital only two days back??"
"It wasn't Pari who left on her wish but it was Shekhar who had compelled her to leave... Samrat, you know your Dad always believed Pari as your angel... He had made Pari promise to be there for you through every good and bad time... And this one event was supposed to be the turning point of your life... How could you expect Shekhar won't send Pari to be present at the event?? And Pari had agreed with only one condition that she will return within one hour... But who knew everything would have ended just in one hour??"
She could say no more... Tears chocked her words as she finally breaks down...
"I can't live under the same roof where the very girl lived who is the reason of Candy's death, the reason of my father's death" Samrat uttered the words
"I can't believe you just said that Samrat" She was left dumbfounded at her son's rude words... "Where will she go?? She has no one else but us"...
"Ask her to go back to the orphanage where she once lived before Dhara aunty brought her home or anywhere she wished to, I really don't care"...
"You really don't care about your father's wish too that means?? Samrat, your father had always wanted Pari to live with us and me too want the same... She is going nowhere to fulfil your whim"
"Fine, then I am leaving" Samrat growled in anger...
"Your wish" Indira Shergill replied back in equally anger tired of making him understand...
Samrat had never expected that his mother would choose Gunjan over him... But that's what happens when the person concerned was Gunjan... She was everyone's favourite and being an orphan gained her sympathy...
He had nothing else to say regarding all these as he had already made up his mind by then... He was going to sign up the new contract which was offered to him recently...
But before going out of the room Samrat stopped once at the door remembering something and turned back towards his mother...
"You were right Mum, this one event really proved to be the turning point of my life... I had lost my Dad after that show and now I have lost you too... And all these because of that one girl Gunjan"...
He slammed the door behind him and left...
-End-
Samrat bang the wardrobe door brought back Indira Shergill from her past thoughts... She had failed as a mother then and it always hurt her since the last five years...
She was alone then, left by her husband forever... She had already lost so many close ones, Dhara, Dia and then her husband Shekhar...
Gunjan and Samrat were her only support, her reasons to live... Also her and Shekhar's wish to have Gunjan as their daughter-in-law made her tried a lot convincing Samrat, but she failed miserably...
She had never wanted Gunjan to leave her and her house and the price she had to pay losing her own son...
"Samrat, I never wanted you to leave either... I never wanted to choose between my children"...
"And still you did... You choose Gunjan over me" Samrat replied...
"Why don't you ever understand Samrat?? I was so alone then, I was so tired and broken... Shekhar's demise was not only your lose, it was mine too... You and Pari were my only hope to live and I never wanted to lose you... I never meant whatever I said then and you know that" She couldn't control her tears any more...
His mother crying helplessly before him was the last thing Samrat wanted to see... Samrat knelt down before his mother and caught hold of her hands...
Five years of struggle had now taught him what it feels like to fight alone for a living...
Five years of separation from his near ones now had taught him what it feels like to have no family...
Five years of aloofness had now taught him what it feels like living without a true friend...
He was young then, lived so long under the protective shadows of his parents and never experienced pain and rejection...
Over the years he had realised how difficult and painful it was for Gunjan when he had thrown all the hurtful words on her face about she being a curse to everybody...
"I'm sorry Mum" Samrat wiped off her tears... "I know you never meant those words... It was me who was being unreasonable" Samrat kissed her hands and rested his head on his mother's laps after so many years...
"I missed you so much Sam" She kissed Samrat on his forehead and slowly ran her fingers through his hairs...
"Me too" Samrat responded continuing to rest on her lap...
"Sam, can't we begin everything afresh forgetting all the bitter past??" Indira Shergill asked Samrat continuing ruffling his hair affectionately...
Samrat too needed a new fresh beginning in his empty life... He needed his Mum back; he needed her love back which he was missing terribly for the last five years...
But there was still something rather someone who was holding him back... A warm hearted calm and quiet girl with kindness in her eyes whose silence has been a torture for him since all these years...
Why doesn't she ever protest??
Why doesn't she ever say that he was wrong??
Why doesn't she ever hurt him for all his rude words??
Why doesn't she ever claim the things that were supposed to be her??
Why doesn't she ever fight back with him instead of accepting his unkindness??
"Mum" Samrat raised his head from his mother's lap hesitantly as he wanted to bring up what he wanted to share "Gunjan??"
"Samrat" Indira Shergill stopped him before he could say anything... "I know what you still think of her and I can never change that... I have tried so much but failed... She had no one except us then and nowhere to go"...
Samrat turned his face from his mother as she went on...
"But now things are going to change... Pari is leaving forever... Can't you be normal with her for some few days??" Indira Shergill pleaded Samrat...
Pari is leaving forever!!...
Samrat couldn't hear anything after that one line as he snapped his head towards his mother...
"Meaning??" Samrat asked...
"Pari is getting married to Ranvijay within a few days and she will leave this place forever"...
