The first sign was when a small budget film with newcomers, Aashiqui 2, raked in Rs80 crore. Then came Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani which crossed the Rs100-crore mark. Now Raanjhanaa raked Rs35 crore in its first week. The writing is on the wall. Romance is ruling 2013 so far. For all those in love with love stories, this week Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera hits the screens. The others lined up are Prabhudheva's Ramaiya Vastavaiya, Manish Tiwary's Issaq, Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express, Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara, Maneesh Sharma's Shudh Desi Romance, Divya (Bhushan) Kumar's Yaariyan, and last but not the least Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram Leela. So get ready to sigh in unison, as the action genre sits it out this year.
Tried and trusted genre Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says that though love is the flavour of the season, romantic films have always been a big draw, "Aashiqui 2, YJHD and Raanjhanaa have paved the way for the future lot of love stories. Even in other films released earlier this year, the love angle was a very crucial part of the narrative, like Kai Po Che, Chasme Buddoor and Fukrey. Love stories can never go out of fashion. Falling or rather rising in love is back. Hatred and love are two most basic emotions that come to us and will always appeal. A well-made love story which has the right kind of emotions, and music to top it off, will always be a hit. There will always be remakes, action and drama stories with dialogue baazi but love stories will always remain evergreen in Bollywood. It is the most tried, tested and trusted genre."
Love actually Vajir Singh adds, "Love is in the air! That's why we have had three films (Aashiqui 2, YJHD and Raanjhanaa) based around love becoming such super hits. Two themes have always worked at the BO — love story and revenge dramas. They will always guarantee success. Romance is an inherent part of many films releasing this year. There is Aman Ki Asha starring Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam, which is a love story about an Indian girl and a Pakistani boy. Revolver Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is about a girl who is madly in love with a guy. Besharam (Ranbir Kapoor) is about a conman's love story. The audience will never get bored or tired of romance... zindagi mein romance toh chahiye." Lootera director Vikramaditya says, "Lootera is a love story and a thriller. It's a story about a relationship between an archaeologist and a zamindar's daughter set in 1953. It's a film about love and betrayal. It's a story that stayed with me the very first time I heard it. And that's why I decided to make it. Love is always timeless. Love stories have always worked and they will continue to as long as we make movies." upala.kbr@dnaindia.net |
