I read several posts from a lot of my friends saying that the fact that Zoya said she wore mini skirts in the USA killed the picture we had of her of being modern yet conserved... So I wanted to share my 2 cents. I agree, I personally feel that dialog was unnecessary, she could have said something like, yeah, sometimes I wear it or something along those lines... or they could have made sure the skirt was longer... so yes, the CVS went a bit OTT with this scene, but, but but...

As regards the image I had of Zoya, it was further cemented that she is a conserved girl. I put myself in her shoes. In the US, I wear (not regularly but when the ocassion calls) strapless dresses at weddings, shorts if I am running outside, or minis if I am hanging out with girl friends. Not as mini as Zoya, but well. When I go back to India, I am always in kurtis and jeans... I infact further respect Zoya now, because it goes to say (unlike what we all thought previously) that she does indeed understand that there is a place and time for everything. While she did not completely change and still wore jeans, etc., and came across as a rebel (again, her introductory scene with jeans in dulhan ka libas was OTT) she infact understood that it may not go well in a small town like Bhopal, or in the Khan household and adjusted to their expectations. Now her protests to Mr. Khan about her tehzeeb in initial episodes are EVEN MORE justified because from her point of view, she did make sure she was all covered (her tehzeeb), though she was used to skin show.

So, my friends, I feel that from a tehzeeb point of view, what happened yesterday , although rebellious brought across two points for me:

1. That indeed she is not as immature about tehzeeb and others as she was made out to be,specially by Asads judgements and more important
2 That she can go to any lengths to make those she loves, SPECIALLY ASAD happy.

What do you say guys?

Bless this post 😊 If CVs went OTT, some people here are reacting more OTT.

To be honest, I think that people need to distinguish between practicing Muslims and non-practicing Muslims, as a starting point.

I choose to see Zoya as a non-practicing Muslim. It does make sense to see her that way, because expecting her to be a practicing Muslim when she's lived most of her life in New York without Islamic parenting, or around practicing Muslims to guide her along -- it's expecting too much.

That is not to say that she's a horrible Muslim. But one must look at her life in NY, her upbringing [and lack thereof], in order to understand why she doesn't have an issue wearing miniskirts in public, etc. In fact, I daresay that the interpretation of her has been realistic, so far.

Regardless of whether it's morally right or wrong.

The life style of the Muslim families in the show have more or less been based on cultural/traditional norms rather than Islamic rules/values. Thus I'm not too worried when it comes to the show's depiction of Zoya's appearance, or some of Asad's conservative opinions, because they're products of the kind of environment and culture that they have been brought up in.

Now, as for the specific issue of Zoya in a miniskirt -- culturally/traditionally, Asad and his family frown upon it because they believe that it's not "tehzeeb" enough in a girl, etc. Looking at it from a purely Islamic point of view, a girl is permitted to wear a miniskirt among other girls. When there are only females around.

Thus the issue should not have been that Zoya wore a miniskirt, but that a man saw her in it.

Food for thought.
