Sorry that I am commenting on a butchered topic already... but i am a groupbie and couldnt comment on your beautiful post and some very logical questions yesterday due to the post limit... So replying today, only only because Ipromised a response... and not because I want to further stretch the already stretched topic of the skirt...

To be honest, I think that people need to distinguish between practicing Muslims and non-practicing Muslims, as a starting point. Thats an intersting take.

and oI choose to see Zoya as a non-practicing Muslim. It does make sense to see her that way, because expecting her to be a practicing Muslim when she's lived most of her life in New York without Islamic parenting, or around practicing Muslims to guide her along -- it's expecting too much. It makes more sense, as such. Practicing or not, Zoya is a good human being. She is loving, forgiving, respectful of other's feelings, and helpful. Morally, she does not cross any boundaries. And, I feel that in the end, this is what all religiouns teach right?

That is not to say that she's a horrible Muslim. But one must look at her life in NY, her upbringing [and lack thereof], in order to understand why she doesn't have an issue wearing miniskirts in public, etc. In fact, I daresay that the interpretation of her has been realistic, so far. I totally agree. Dare I also add, that we are all doing the same mistake that Asad is being accused of - judging something by its cover or facevalue. I do agree that cvs add more drama by going a bit over the top - like the size of the skirt in this episode, or asad's outbursts in the earlier episodes... or even zoya's modernism by showing that she was wearing jeans on her nikah day - but these are just creative liberties they take to drive across the point - the point which is Never Judge a Book by its Cover. And, I am glad, atleast for me it was, and beautifully so.

Regardless of whether it's morally right or wrong.

The life style of the Muslim families in the show have more or less been based on cultural/traditional norms rather than Islamic rules/values. Thus I'm not too worried when it comes to the show's depiction of Zoya's appearance, or some of Asad's conservative opinions, because they're products of the kind of environment and culture that they have been brought up in. Totlaly agree. You are bang on. Both of them have been through similar issues personally but the environment and frame of reference they come from are different.

Now, as for the specific issue of Zoya in a miniskirt -- culturally/traditionally, Asad and his family frown upon it because they believe that it's not "tehzeeb" enough in a girl, etc. Looking at it from a purely Islamic point of view, a girl is permitted to wear a miniskirt among other girls. When there are only females around. And many of us are forgetting, this is exactly what she was doing... And yes her dialog that she always wears these types of clothes in new york is a bit off, rather exaggerated but isn't everything zoya say actually an exaggeration... isnt she an OTT character as such, so may be she was just like *Oh really , duh!*. Or, even if she wears these clothes daily - the point is... dont judge!

Thus the issue should not have been that Zoya wore a miniskirt, but that a man saw her in it. Hmm, yes. And, even then... I was more than floored by her dialog... Ye mere kapde hain, character nahi. That kind of summed it up all for me.

Loved your post though! Keep sharing more ideas... Its always great to see different POV and have a healthy discussion...

Food for thought.
