Let's back it up 5 steps. I was raised in NYC ever since an infant. However, I have a strong, traditional desi background and am a moderate muslim.

Gul Khan, what did you do?

I fit into the age range of Zoya in real life. I'm a female new yorker who shares the cultural background as in Qubool hai. Religion-wise, I'm not perfect but am moderate. I don't drink, go to bars, wear mini skirts. Hey, I do wear jeans and sneakers and business suits -- not wearing traditional shilwar-cameese clothes all the time.

But today's episode reinforced the stereotype that all guys and gals that are desi and muslim who grew up in America are super modern and are insensitive to culture and religion

Come on Gul, we watched your episodes to relate. You were uniting western and eastern desi folks across borders. But now, with this added on, I think twice about the sensitivity of the writers.

Zoya is supposed to be challenging hypocrisy - which is great. But by adding the whole " i used to wear it in US all the time" reinforces another hypocrisy / stereotype that all [US/NYC] muslim or desi people are so modern that they are insensitive to their cultural/religious roots.

How about getting your writers to do some fixing up? It's left a bitter taste in my mouth.

When did Zoya say all Muslim girls in NY wear the miniskirt? She just spoke for her. Zoya is not representive of all modern, liberal Muslim girls, so not everybody can relate with her. She is a voice of those girls who do not want to be judged by what they wear and I relate to her. I am modern and liberal but I have never worn a mini skirt, that doesn't mean I disapprove those liberal, modern girls who wear mini or micro mini and demand that they should be modern in their thoughts rather than their dressing. One can't expect every liberal girl to be like them, there is no set of rules to be liberal and modern.

Um excuse me when did Zoya generalise ? I believe she said she wore miniskirts not the entire American Muslim population. I suggest you back and watch the episode and stop being so sensitive about a fictional Indian tv show.

I agree with your post. I didn't mind her wearing the skirt on Najma's request as a one time thing, but that one statement was off putting. I am a Muslim living in Chicago, I also don't go to bars, or wear clothes that go above my calves or no sleeves. I consider myself to be modern with a moderate religious background. I dont care what clothes others wear especially fictious characters, but that statement made it seem like modern Muslims living in America wear clothes like that. I know your clothes don't make you, but certain statements carry weight, like the one made in the show.

I am assuming that they are showing her wearing a skirt as part of culture rather than religion.

Hey! Don't mean to sound rude, but I am also from NY and I don't think Zoya generalized at all. I am Muslim and I have many friends who are and they dress according to what they like...honestly that's what I think Zoya was getting at. She was talking about herself, as a person really I don't think religion has anything to do with it 😕

Exactly, Not ALL Muslim Girls in NYC wear mini-skirts, but some do, and it is their own choice! No one should have a problem with that! 😳 Zoya said what she is used to, she didn't say what others do.

When did Zoya say ALL Muslim girls wear mini-skirts? She only spoke for herself. And frankly at the risk of being reported - the Muslims on this forum do not represent the entire population of liberal Muslim women.

I am from NY too and although I am not a Muslim I know many Muslim girls wear western clothes and yes even skirts, mini skirts. Zoya never generalized at all. She said she used to wear it all the time in NY and wearing mini skirts or western clothes does not have anything to do with their character or Tehzeeb as in culture.
I agree.
Forget Zoya in my college hostel in Bangalore 2 of my roomies were Muslim. We never felt different from each other and were close knit. Both of them used to wear western clothes and yes mini, micro mini you name it. I understand some people might be too traditional and some are not. That happens in every religion. Lets enjoy QH as a show and let's not bring religion into it. With all due respect if someone feels offended just skip it.

You guys are right Zoya only did say it was her who only wore it but I guess in a way Gul was trying to show and represent that Muslim girls in America wear such clothes ... and most non virtual audience could interpret in such a way... which of course is absolutely false.
