It's all business. If the movies work so much then actors can continue to demand more money. Although I think that actors and actresses both get overpaid, the gap between them is incredibly sexist. If a top actress like Kareena earns that much, imagine someone just starting out without any Kapoor khandan tag.
I think cricket and Bollywood are almost like religions in India. People are willing to spend so much on movies! There are a lot of hardcore fans that are very devoted to their favorite celebrities.
And Indian stars become glorified celebrities because of so much exposure! From television shows like Bigg Boss, Jhalak, etc to advertisements/endorsements to billboards, magazine covers. They're constantly around us. Try walking around in a city in India, there's no denying that you will eventually come across the face of a celebrity on some product. We're socialized to think of them as these beautiful people to look up to.
