Think Shankar Ehsaan Loy and the name Javed Akhtar comes to mind immediately. After all the four of them have scripted some of the best music together in their association over the years. But the credit details of 'Salaam-E-Ishq' catch you by surprise since Sameer has been roped in as a lyricist to pen the words for SEL to compose their tunes. Another surprise (a good one again) comes from the fact that in an age where each and every album comes with a remix version of 2-3-4 songs, SEL has 7 tunes with none of them being repeated as a remix.

Together, director Nikhil Advani and Shankar Ehsaan Loy had a chartbuster score in the form of 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. With a mammoth starcast in hand and the trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy enjoying the best phase of their career, it is pretty much given thought that 'Salaam-E-Ishq' too would be a winner in the making. It truly is the case as album succeeds in sticking to the genre of the film i.e. 'a tribute to love' and actually conveys the emotions through the 7 songs.

Write your own musicreview of Salaam-E-Ishq: A Tribute To Love
Is it country music that you are hearing? Or are there Caribbean elements to it? 'Dil Kya Kare' is a combination of both (an amazing one at that) and a lot more as it marks the return of Adnan Sami to the big stage yet again as he goes extremely mellow in this smooth-n-silky love song. Sameer's poetry goes quite well for the song of this genre that mainly has a guitar playing throughout with very minimal dose of other instruments in the background. As one hears on the song for long, the classy touch of SEL start becoming quite apparent. A few seconds later, you are truly moved to a different world altogether as Caribbean/African flavor in the song becomes much more visible. A beautiful song that has a brief element of full blown title song 'Salaam-E-Ishq' which comes later in the album.

After a Western/Caribbean flavor, the album takes a twist with a 'qawalli' that begins with a prelude followed by new entrant Shilpa taking over the proceedings. With Sameer around, there is always a high probability of 'saiyaan', 'choodi', 'kangana' and 'jhumka' around and he delivers as expected with the song 'Saiyaan Re'. What takes the cake is the fact that there is a western fusion element to the qawalli that makes it stand out in the crowd. A 'jugalbandi' of sorts with Shankar Mahadevan pairing up with Shilpa and Loy Mendonca doing the supporting act; it is a guaranteed winner in the making due to its beautiful rhythm that hooks you on in the first listening itself. With Govinda in the film, 'Saiyaan Re' seems to be tailor-made for him and if that indeed is the case then it is good news for his fans!

After two (well done) experimental numbers, listener gets to hear a kind of composition that has Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy stamp all over it. Titled 'Mera Dil', it is a sugar coated love song with fantasy ingredients to it which makes it a feel-good number to croon around. Sung by Shaan, the song is also special for Nihira, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa finalist, who had earlier played a supporting role to Sunidhi Chauhan in 'Dhadak Dhadak' [Bunty Aur Babli]. With 'Mera Dil' she makes a confident entry to the big arena and gives a good account of herself as someone who can croon for a girl in her teens or someone just out if it. Is this melodious track the one which has been composed for Ayesha Takia and Akshaye Khanna?

SEL's stint with experimentation continues as they follow up the sound of Bagpiper with Indian 'dholaki' beats. Now that's being innovative! A song that would have made a Yash Chopra or a Karan Johar proud, title song 'Salaam-E-Ishq' is an instant winner due to its overtly catchy and easy to croon appeal! Shot on a grand scale coming across as an ensemble piece with singers like Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal Ganjawala, Sadhana Sargam and Shankar Mahadevan behind the mike, it brings together the majority of starcast together in the song which is truly a celebration of love! Fourth successive winning number in a row!

If one thought that 'Dil Kya Kare' was the first and last song where SEL experimented with Caribbean sound then you need to hear 'Tenu Leke'. It is quite interesting to hear the sound of 'dhol along with 'band baaja' that actually is played on a Caribbean theme. Hear it to believe it. A marriage song about a guy coming to the girl's place with a 'baraat' and promising to take her away with him, 'Tenu Leke' is a song with an unconventional 'mukhda' which sets the pace for the rest of the song to follow. A dance number that is bound to look good on screen!

Nihira is the only female singer in the entire album who gets to sing two songs as she croons the re-arranged [not remixed] version of the classic 'Babuji Dheere Chalna' [Aar Paar] originally sung by Geeta Dutt. She does a good job in crooning this track which in all probability seems to be one designed for Priyanka Chopra who is shown as an item girl in the film. Good part about the song is that it's soft feel is kept intact without making it as yet another 'beat one-beat two' number and the slight techno arrangements given to create a true 'retro'-spective number makes it an eminently enjoyable number all over again.

With Kailash Kher's name on the credits, one expects a full throated number that is high on spirits. What instead comes a surprise (yet again) is to actually hear him sing on a medium pitch as he goes about rendering 'Ya Rabba', a thoughtful number about 'a problem called love'! A sad song that moves at a slow pace while creating the much required impact, it doesn't drag for a single moment and should be quite engrossing when appearing (expectedly) at different points in the film.

Each of the songs of 'Salaam-E-Ishq' boasts of high quality music. There are some new sounds interspersed with the kind of music that goes well with the Bollywood scheme of things and the final result is something that is going to stay with you for many more months to come. Music of 'Salaam-E-Ishq' is yet another winner before an eminently successful 2006 comes to a close. Also SEL can assure themselves a hat-trick after two back to back successes in the form of 'vKabhi Alvida Na Kehna' and 'Don'.

Salaam-E-Ishq Music Review

SEL are back once again this yr with an album...this yr has been very dissapointing for them...KANK was really off...I was so surprised that this music team failed that bad...so will they bounce back this time around? LETS SEE...

Dil Kya Kare - Adnan Sami gets the first song of the album...and boy does he excell...I actually loved his voice in this song...I always thought that Adnan just wasn't cut out for Bollywood songs...but in this song he is at eaze...he doesnt go overboard...the lyrics are awesome...SEL added some nice soothing beats...some beats remind you of African beats...if you guyz have ever heard African style music you will know what I mean...this song rocks.

Saiyaan Re - Shankar starts off the song with some nice lyrics and then the music completely changes...nice mixin here...a singer named Shilpa rocks the song inside out...a good dance item type of song here...this is just a... ... fun and lovin song where both Shilpa and Shanker kick major ass in...the song has a rebel typa feel to it...very edgy...masses will love it.

Mera Dil - Hmmmm...Shaan and Nihira. As for the ppl who are scratching their heads when they think of Nihiri...well she is a new singer...she was a part of the SAREGAMPA 2005 CHALLENGE...well Nihira is excellent here alongside Shaan...Nihira is actually Shaan's favourite singer...so this must of been a delight for him to work in a song with her...the song is nice...but then the Chorus picks up the music tends to go very loud...thats what I always hated about SEL...the loudness of their music rides over the singer's voices. But overall the song is nice...and the lyrics are good as well here.

Salaam-e-ishq - BEST SONG THIS YEAR...YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH IT AT FIRST GO...SONU AND KUNAL PUT SOME MUCH EFFORT AND PASSION INTO THIS DAMN SONG...KUNAL EXCELLS EVEN MORE THAN SONU HERE FOR GOD SAKES...SHREYA AND MAHALAXMI ARE PERFECTTT...LOVE THE SCOTTISH BAGPIPES...EVERY PART AND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SONG ROCKS...HAHAHAHAHA.

Tenu Leke - This song is picturized on Sallu and Priyanka somewhere in LONDON...The song starts off in bad note...Sonu Nigam picks the song up from there and turns this song into an OK NUMBER...the beats are ok sometimes kinda cheesy...so far this is the weakest song in the album...hopefully Sallu's funny dance moves and steps turns this number into a good viewing for us all.

Ya Rabba - I heard that this song is picturized on John and Vidya...well Kailash Kher is up this time...and as always hes at his best...the lyrics are very strong in this song...throughout we have been listening to fast paced, happy-going songs in this album...but this one is an emotional one here...I'm really adoring it...SEL use Kailash to his fullest...very good number....YA RABBA DEDEY KOI JAAN BHI AGAR...DILBAR PE HO NA DILBAR PE HO NA KOI ASAR....beautiful lycs.

Babuji - Nihir Joshi is back once again...this time with an old classic number that she has to carry on her back...does she do good??? YEP...lovin her voice...hears a girl that was made for Bollywood guys...SEL do a good job here...givin their beats to an old-time classic...I THINK THIS ONE IS PICTURIZED ON ANJALI & ANIL...is a seductive number...but I can be wrong...anyways...I liked it...usually im against remakes or remixes...but SEL do well here...propz to them.

SO OVERALL...WOW...I wasn't expecting this album to be that good...its not a classic or by any means SEL's best...But this yr not many good albums came out...even SEL failed many times...but this time their in form...its way better than KANK and DON...good stuff here...PPL like Adnan and Kailash Kher really stand out in this album...Kunal always surprises even though he doesnt have a full song...the title track is the best...Ya rabba will be loved by those who are into emotional and sad type of songs...there lots of fun with Saiyaan Re and the remix to Babuji....GOOD ALBUM.

Monday, December 4, 2006: (Mumbai):

Nikhil Advani released the music of his new movie Salame-e-Ishq in a different style.

The musical trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy performed at the event, but the highlight was a fashion show by Vikram Phadnis, for which the stars of the movie performed - all 12 of them.

Nothing about Nikhil Advani's forthcoming film Salam-e-Ishq is simple, not even its music release.

Salman Khan, Juhi Chawla, John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Govinda, Ayesha Takia, Anil Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, all came to the party at Mumbai's Grand Hyatt on Saturday - all of them late.

Shankar, Ehsan and Loy floored the guests with a short performance. And the highlight of the show was a fashion show by designer Vikram Phadnis - the film's costume designer and the one who made the stars walk the ramp.

The low point of the show was that there was no Salaam Dua with either the director or the actors.

They chose not to talk to the media. The movie is due for release on January 25. Let's see how long their silence lasts.

Nikhil's nakhras

Nikhil's nakhras

Nikhil Advani needs a lesson in good manners. Or at the very least, some smarts to not appear in front of the media slightly sozzled. For his bad attitude was on full display on Saturday at the music launch of his second film, Salaam-e-Ishq. Trust us, it wasn't a pretty sight. What's worse, the wannabe treated most of the media rather shabbily by announcing, "Either stand on the side and cover the event or go home. Please don't disturb my stars!"

Such a 'sham'e: Nikhil Advani

Boosting my morale: John Abraham and Bipasha Basu

HANDS APPEAL: Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan

Disturb your stars? They were there to speak to the media in case you forgot what the whole sham was about, Nikhil. Of course, most TV crews didn't get their much-needed sound bytes and almost boycotted the event too, before the affable Govinda stole the show.

Adding to an already thanda event was the super cold vibes between John Abraham and Salman Khan. While a somewhat nervous-looking John preferred to blend into the background, Sallu greeted and hugged all the stars present on stage — other than Johnny boy, of course! We think Coke should do an ad about this freezing feud using the tag line, 'Thanda matlab John-Sallu ka jhagda!'
Wot say?

Freeze frame! John Abraham stands back while Salman Khan owns the stage and all the attention

When stars dazzled on stage!

By Taran Adarsh, December 4, 2006 - 08:35 IST

The music launch of Nikhil Advani's SALAAM-E-ISHQ can be best described in one word: Spectacular. It wasn't merely a music launch, with the guest of honor releasing the CD amidst loud cheers. This mega event was truly hatke. How, did you ask? Okay, let's give you a lowdown…

Katrina Kaif, wearing a pale yellow sari, walked on stage, kick-starting the event with finesse. "When I learnt that Nikhil Advani was making a film, I approached him for a role in it. But he assured me that we'd work some day. Nikhil did approach me, but to host this show," she joked.

It was now the turn of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music composers of SALAAM-E-ISHQ, to perform first. The trio regaled the audiences with a couple of tracks from the film. The party had begun to gather momentum and what followed took the breath away: The six pairs of the film walked on the ramp.

There were six sequences in all [the models were sporting the outfits from the film] and after each sequence, a pair walked on stage. It started with John Abraham-Vidya Balan, followed by Sohail Khan-Isha Koppikar, Govinda [solo act], Akshaye Khanna-Ayesha Takia, Anil Kapoor-Juhi Chawla, Anjana Sukhani [solo act] and of course, Salman Khan-Priyanka Chopra. While most of them may have walked the ramp earlier, it was a [pleasant] surprise to watch Govinda take to the stage without inhibitions. In fact, the scene stealers were Salman, Akshaye and Govinda.

Nikhil Advani took centerstage and showed the elite gathering a glimpse of his soon-to-be-released biggie [an impressive trailer, no doubt]. "If you felt that the fashion show was lengthy, wait till you watch my film," he joked. Producers Mukesh Talreja and Sunil Manchanda and presenter Gautam Kumar also joined Nikhil later.

The music launch evening was dedicated to Aangan Trust.

The guest-list was a mix of the crme de la crme of the entertainment industry [Jaya Bachchan, Salma Khan, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Rohan Sippy] and the Page 3 crowd.

Salaam-E-Ishq: Awesome music

Sukanya Verma

December 04, 2006 18:18 IST

Nikhil Adavani's much-awaited follow up to Kal Ho Naa Ho, sans the Karan Johar support, looks gorgeous in its 30-second trailer.

Said to be loosely inspired by the 2003 ensemble hit, Love Actually, at least as far as the format goes -- six couples (Anil Kapoor-Juhi Chawla, Salman Khan-Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham-Vidya Balan, Govinda-Shannon Esra, Akshaye Khan-Ayesha Takia and Sohail Khan-Isha Koppikar ), six romances, Salaam-e-Ishq has everyone's curious side up.

Capturing love in all its six flavours, melodies and moods, music directors Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy skilfully put together an assortment to relish.

The album opens with the freshness and fragrance of a brand new soap. With its clean cut notes and dazzling originality, Dil Kya Karen instantly impresses. What makes the song cool is that it doesn't belong to any particular genre. Instead, it gathers references from Afro-Caribbean, Spanish, Celtic and ethnic sets of world music. Sameer's lyrics, however, could have easily refrained from the usage of Hinglish. Also, the chorus bears a recurring resemblance to the ones in Jaane Kyun (Dil Chahta Hai) and Kuch Toh Hua Hai (Kal Ho Naa Ho).

It's time for fusion qawaali with the oomph personified Saiyaan re. Newbie Shilpa steals the show with her perfectly impish delivery. Despite Shankar Mahadevan's dynamic presence, this singer, to watch out for, is never once intimidated.

Over the years, Shankar-Loy-Ehsaan have crafted a trademark style of turning murmuring flirtations into high-pitched, all-out declarations. Be it Dillagi (Dillagi), Kuch Naa kaho (Kuch Naa Kaho) or the recent chartbuster Mitwa (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna). The next track of Salaam-e-Ishq falls in this category. The diverse shades of Shaan's spontaneity and Nihira's precision mix and match to alluring effect in the utterly silky and romance hued Mera Dil.

A line up of talented voices like Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghosal, Kunal Ganjawala, Sadhna Sargam and Mahadevan gather, to salute love in all its splendour, in the effervescent and overwhelming, Salaam-e-Ishq. The troika of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy cleverly lend a larger-than-life feel to this grand composition with generous and nifty use of dhols and bagpiper.

More pep comes your way with the zippy Punjabi entr'e, Tenu leke. Picturised on Salman Khan and dozens of extras in bright outfits just outside London's majestic Saint Paul's Cathedral and National Library, this one's a foot-tapping delight. Strutting on a horse, donning nothing less than a shocking orange sherwani and truckloads of attitude to woo the girl, that's Salman-e-ishq for you. Full marks to Sonu Nigam for instilling rollicking gusto in the number

Post-Don: The Chase Begins Again, the remix mantra continues. This time around Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy add haunting, seductive dimensions in their night clubby mix of O P Nayyar's 1954 creation, Babuji (Aar Paar). Alas, Nihira is no Geeta Dutt and blandly croons the dizzy ditty without ever possessing the quality of a teasing temptress.

The husky baritone of Kailash Kher remarkably conveys the pathos and anguish of a relationship in Ya rabba. Truth be told when it comes to sad songs, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are one of the best in the business. Tanhayi (Dillagi), Tanhayee (Dil Chahta Hai), Kal Ho Naa Ho-sad version (Kal ho naa ho), Kitni Baatein Yaad (Lakshya) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK) bear testimony to the fact.

Salaam-e-Ishq is a well-designed, wholesome soundtrack with emphasis on melody, beat and innovation. Featuring seven individual tracks, no sad versions or technically damaged retakes. It is seven out of seven! The musical trio succeed in getting the perfect score. Take a bow, you guys!
