Deconstructing Rishbala and Sulbala: Who is better

A few things before I begin this post, in the interest of forum peace😊
1) I am a Madhu fan first and foremost. Please read my previous posts for backup of this assertion.
2) What we say in reel life is very different from what we tolerate in real life- whatever I am saying is in the context of the serial itself, and does not apply to my views of real life. Please keep that in mind before accusing me of being sympathetic to abusers.
3) I am going to try to write this post with the greatest of respect to each fanbase. Do me the courtesy of replying similarly- no bashing of characters, actors, or fan bases.

So, onward! I will try to delve into the good, bad and ugly, so please forgive me if I offend.

Since the Sultan track started and we've gotten to know more about this man, there has been an upswing of support for Sultan and Madhu. I can see why. RK has hurt, humiliated, and shattered Madhu, with no remorse per say, and no realization. So I can see where the Madhu/Sultan fanbase is coming from- there point of view is valid.
However, I want to go over the Rishbala and Sulbala relationship and show why Rishbala is going to be endgame.

Rishbala: RK has been accused for being an abuser. Let's see how much he fits into this:
Emotional Abuse: a form of abuse characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another to behavior that may result in psychological trauma, including anxiety, chronic depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Effects: emotional abuse has long term debilitating effects on a person's sense of self and integrity
What has RK done that can be constructed as emotionally abusive? He has called Madhu names, has denigrated her family, has cast aspersions on her as a woman and as a wife. He did this pre their marriage, during the early stages of their marriage, and post marriage breakup. Note that unlike most emotional abuse, this was not consistent- he had a break and then resumed post revenge scenario. What is unique about this situation is that Madhu always fights back. She has setbacks, but she bounces back and for the most part, she gives as good as she gets. Madhu does not allow RK to hold her down. His insanity feeds into hers. It is a toxic cycle, but in terms of emotional strength she trumps him. So yes, there is emotional abuse in this relationship, but don't insult Madhu by casting her as the victim. She fights back, consistently, and has never allowed RK to lower her sense of worth as a person.
Physical Abuse: RK has manhandled Madhu on various occasions, but as this is a trope consist with the industry I'm not going to bash him for it. He has never slapped her and with the exception of one time when he held her very tightly, has never truly hurt her physically.
So painting RK as a abuser is somewhat true, but not wholly. And painting Madhu as his victim is not true at all. What happens between Rishbala is a power play, and always has been. Madhu too gets her hands dirty- she used the pictures of RK and his dad and really hurt him. The difference is Madhu repents, and RK has not done so yet. But the CV's have established that Rishbala are both a little on the crazy side (RK with his antics, Madhu with hers), especially for each other.

Sulbala: My biggest problem with this pairing is very simple. Sultan is a gangster! He breaks the law regularly, is involved in a trade that at the least has extortion, murder, kidnapping, arms smuggling etc involved. So what if he does not peddle drugs? He killed people in cold blood! Is that somehow better than being a drug dealer? In the context of the show, Ballu has killed people (I think) and so has Sultan. He does not peddle drugs because he has a son- who, lets not forget, he is training to be an emotionless automaton. Because Sultan knows the nature of the world he is in. He and his family are in constant danger- actually physical, we can die danger.
I don't care if he's kind, supportive, and a balm to Madhu's wounds. I like Aryan, but frankly again, I do not care that the kid brings to mind a box full of soaking wet kittens. Because if Madhu gets together with Sultan, she will be in danger all the time. There will always be another Bhujang. There will always be the threat of police finding and jailing the guy. She will outside the law, outside society's "protection". Madhu with Sultan will be 20 times more vulnerable than Madhu without Sultan because Madhu with Sultan will have no recourse but Sultan! A man who, what 5 days after he moved to India lost control of his empire to one of his underlings. It does not fill me with confidence for her fate. No amount of emotional support can make up for the actual physical, constant danger she will be in. No cute kid will make up for that. Furthermore, Madhu can basham Sultan about Aryan- but come on- if she got together with him, how much could she fight him? WHen he held her life in his hands everyday?

I know people want Madhu to ditch RK. Believe me, I sympathize. But lets be honest here. Madhu has flaws as well and at this juncture, loving insanely is one of them. She loves him. He has hurt her deeply, but she loves him. Should she go back to him? Not unless he respects her as a human being who has the agency to make her own choices. Will that actually happen in the show? No because then the show would be over. Probably Sultan will ask Madhu to take care of Aryan, and RK will offer his services in order to get Madhu to come back. To cover up Aryan's involvement, Madhu will say she is giving him a second chance. The road to RK recognizing Madhu as a person, then his feelings, will be a long one. But don't think Madhu will go running to Sultan because she recognizes that she should be away from RK. If Madhu made logical decisions, she would never have gone back to Aryan. The same desperation she loves Aryan with, she loves RK with. With no boundaries, and with no thought to others. So why would she fall for Sultan?
As a Madhu lover, I want her to get away from both these men. As a viewer of this show, I know this is not going to happen.
So I support the pairing in which Mahdu can fight back, in relatively equal footing.

Opinions?

Word perfect. 👏👏
Honestly I have nothing to add because you have said all that I would have. My current thoughts on the whole scenario of the show right now has been perfectly summed up by you. Very well written.

Thanks very much! As you know I'm a Madhu fan, but some of the stuff that's been going around the forum made me see red- the poor girl can't catch a break from either camp!
Never thought I would write a post defending RK though...if Shri reads this she'll just start laughing😆

I want entertainment that is pleasurable, enjoyable to watch with friends and family.

I want the show to be stimulating as always.

But what I don't want and don't like is people forcing idealism and self-righteousness as the Mantra of the Age down my throat...and especially when the soap-writers do not ask us to appreciate it and instead mock it.

The Creative team is a mix of men and women developing, writing the story, script & screenplay, so they know what each kind of emotion shown is going to invoke in the audience and yet they go for all permutations and combinations. And in that token, I would like to give an honest feedback on the episode. If I felt it as shameless act, I would like to use the word regardless of the fan sentiments. If felt it as an act of frivolity, then I would like to use the word regardless of who might react to the comment. All I care is my feedback should be honest. Because that way I can post my feedback to the PH.

All kind of people enjoy the show. Realists, Humorists, Romantics etc etc...Why should one category bully the other ?!!! Let each enjoy according to his/her taste as shown in the episode and let each have independence to express what they want.

Let me show you a sample...A friend of mine posted last night, how from past few days MEIEJ is being watched, especially since the hope of Rishbala was gone post revenge, and how these days...instead of being gripped into silence, each has his own commentary. This I call a ENTERTAINMENT ZONE without any offence to anyone, regardless of ones likes...All in the same family. So here it is how it goes.

XYZ, you mentioned that you really enjoy watching MB with your mom, I'd say I think watching this show with other people is highly entertaining.

Normally when I watch it I'm with my mom. My dad used to be a regular viewer as well (half the time he'd be watching it midmorning on his iPad instead of waiting for the telecast) he stopped caring about the show after the unwedding, now he watches it when he's home and my mom and I are watching. My sisters would be the most entertaining to watch with as they just rip the show apart (but in a completely hilarious way) or go off on random tangents during it. For example at one point they fell in love with Bittuji and my sisters and two of their friends that were over decided they were going to start a Bittuji fanclub and fly down to India with posters and cheer outside the studio for him. My brother likes to do impressions of RK, one time he almost fell off the couch as my sister directed that his head wasn't tilted to the side enough to resemble RK. Most recently my sister piped up during the precap of the police showing up with "Did Madhu call them so she can get that guy out of the way to raise the kid with no interference?". The list goes on.

Anyways, the point of this post was to share some random ramblings from my parents during tonight's episode (note - all comments were made in Punjabi):

Mom (constantly throughout): Is no one seeing RK? Isn't he a superstar. Why is it like he's invisible? Lai, even if they're used to seeing him there should be some reaction. No one sees him?!

Me: I don't like that Sultan put color on her first.
Mom: Well he needs the wake up call!
Dad: It's his own fault for walking so slow. Perhaps if he hadn't been walking in slow motion he woildc gotten there first. That'll teach him for next time. Forthi se!

(Aage Dekhiye - showing dance)
Dad (shocked? maybe surprised): Lai! They've started dancing?!?

(During my favorite part of the dance when RK lifts Madhu)
Dad: What kind of dance move is this?
Mom: Bechara, who knows how many times he needed to try this. He probably fell a time or two.
(then they proceeded to have a short conversation about how many time he may have fallen, how it might have been more believable if it was someone with "Kabir's" body doing the lifting (my mom) at which point I piped up in VD's defense and my dad seconded me saying this munda looked strong too)

These were the highlights. Oh and there was. Point where my mom did an impression of RK scaring some poor soul into giving him the dhol.

I love you AA for this post!!😳

Your points were very valid and very effective.I'll tell you outright that I'm a Rishbala shipper.I came on board of MEIEJ mania, fresh without any baggage from each of the leads previous shows.Since I wasn't regular viewer of their previous shows, i didn't have any pre-conceived ideas...😳 So, I came, I watched and I fell in love with the pair BEFORE RK's so called revenge plan came into action(before the ganesh sequence)..!!!😃 So, i'm not totally convinced with this new ideology and self-righteous bashing going against his character now.Because, he DID the same thing before his shooting and STILL people fell in love with him once. Why didn't this self-righteousness assert itself then..??!!😲😳

And Sultan, I have no comments about, since the character seems too shady right now. And if I do comment it'll probably be seen as something else.

Coming to Madhu, i know you are a Madhu fan.Even I was, (notice was😉) once upon a time. But right now her antics are making me love her that much little less.I know RK hurt her, betrayed her and all that I sympathised with her during that drama too...!!!(You can also check some previous posts i made during the "Big Twist" by the CV's..😳).But that doesn't mean she was or is entirely helpless. As you so beautifully descriped in your post, she ISN'T wholly the victim either.Because if it was so, she would have taken a little MORE time to get out of that devastation. As you mentioned, her inner strength is in fact more than the betrayer(RK), since he isn't able to get out of it at all, despite him being the offender here..!!!😲

I think RK is human with his many flaws(obviously some very BIG one's, I would say) , yes,but despite that many would love to protest, i think Madhu isn't without her flaws too...The BIGGEST of them being what she's commited just recently, by sheltering a most-wanted criminal(she doesn't know otherwise and neither do we) in a place, where not only hers, but many other families live too.So forgive me for not singing praises of her "Mahaanta"..!!😳

So these two flawed human beings make a better pairing in my view, than the man who I'm not sure anything about other than the fact he's a gangster..!!!😳 Even if it is shown other wise now, it obviously wouldn't really help his cause, because then we would know it was made up just to white-wash him..!!LOL.😆

OMG!!I wrote an essay too..!!😆😆Thank you for this post AA...Its awesome!!!😃

Sultan being gangster will never be right person for MAdhu..I said this earlier too but I don't see any reason that RK is right for Madhu either except for her insane love for him... I admit that Madhu has her own flaws but that doesn't make her perfect match for RK😛

He was an abuser I said that long time before when he was showering Madhu with all humiliations
It'll be always Rishbala end game but its too early to accept the fact...Even for moment I believe that he has changed or his feelings r true then what he has done to make Madhu believe that...😕 Just today morning when I read the news of Madhu returning to RK mansion I was so mad that I said let her go there then ditch him when he starts feeling for her😛...May be I don't mean it completely as it was came out as anger but this time I want Madhu to not give in till her trust rebuilt in that relationship😳 even if it sounds as torture then be it...😆

Sulbala or Rishbala...I ship Bala😳😆 May be she's dumb or stupid at times but she's flawed character unlike rest of the shows' perfect leads😊

First of all, a big applause for this fantastic well written post. You have done it beautifully on a positive note and of course sensible words.

I completely agree with you on each aspect. There's nothing for me to add in as you have said it all. :) I hope many would heed to your words.

Lovely analysis!👏👏👏 I especially concur on the bits in bold...and the bit in blue is exactly what I've myself been saying for a while...their relationship inherently is a POWER PLAY...I can't really bring myself to label it ABUSIVE precisely for the reason you've pointed out...Madhu is NOT a victim...she never LETS herself be the victim and THEREIN lies her victory compared to many other carbon copy goody goody characters on TV in Gul Khan shows. Madhu gives it back as good as she gets...

RK is all his twisted ego tries time and again to BREAK her strength but FAILS...every single time...infact he himself comes undone...

The reason he loves her IS cuz she's NOT a victim...it's cuz she fights back and puts him in his place.

Their power play has changed shape in some ways with time but it is inherently STILL a power play...when they first started out, it was about his dark fascination with her and wanting to break her spirit...Madhu for her part REFUSED to give an inch and decided to answer him back in ways she knew best...TOXIC CYCLE is a perfect description cuz they both FUEL each other's madness...It's literally like watching two chess players...He'll do something then she has to respond...she'll do something then he has to respond.

To me, this gif sorta summarizes their relationship in what was otherwise a light-hearted moment b/w them...

Madhu ungli dikhaayegi toh RK HAS to BEND it😆😆...She's a CHALLENGE that he HAS to win OVER and OVER again...that's his obsession...He can't let her have the last word....

It's a GAME b/w them...RK THRIVES on playing mind games with everyone in his life...but Madhu is the ONLY person who has stood up to him in those games and made the challenge more FUN for him...lol...and in all that only somewhere they've managed to fall passionately in love with each other...so situations change, circumstances change...but inherently the POWER PLAY remains...it will be there in EVERY facet of their relationship whether good or bad...that's how I see them.
