Enough tales are told with male characters: Nagesh Kukunoor

Nagesh Kukunoor, whose upcoming film " Laxmi" is on the issue of child prostitution, says he will continue making women-centric films as there are enough filmmakers in Bollywood focussing on male protagonists.

"There are enough tales told with male characters. I genuinely feel that a lot of the attributes regarding women have never been portrayed well in cinema. So many roles have been written for men. But when it comes to women its a sheer numbers game. I think it's virgin territory as there is a lot stuff that could still be told," Kukunoor told .

The director has given some memorable female characters to cinema in his critically acclaimed films like "Dor", "Iqbal", "Hyderabad Blues" and "Rockford".

Kukunoor believes his new film "Laxmi" is hard-hitting as it revolves around the life of a child prostitute. The cast of film includes Shefali Shah and Ram Kapoor with other new faces.

The director has not fixed a date for its release yet. He is currently submitting the film to various film festivals.

He is also exploring the idea of making a road movie.

"Its been something that I have been wanting to do for long time. I have made films in every single genre. Road journey is one such genre that I want to explore and truthfully road movies haven't been explored a lot in India which leaves it wide open to do a whole bunch of them," Kukunoor said.

He has only worked with two Bollywood stars, Akshay Kumar and John Abraham in his 15-year-long film-making career.

When asked about his reluctance to work with stars, Kukunoor said, "If the script is large in scope and requires a lot of money then you have to get a big name to justify that, if its not then you can do without them."

The director prefers to call all his movies real-fiction -- where the settings are real but the stories are fictionalised -- believes that he has a had a fair share of telling both 'rural' and 'urban' stories on the celluloid.

On his future plans, Kukunoor said, "I have always said that I will make a film in every genre. There is a big action film left. 'Tasveer' had a little bit of action, a horror film a road movie are also left.

Nagesh Kukunoor's Lakshmi to do the rounds of film festivals

One such case about a 14-year-old stood out and grabbed my attention, so I wove a tale around it. Lakshmi is a fictional account of many true stories

- Nagesh Kukunoor, director

Nagesh Kukunoor who has just wrapped up the shooting of his latest film, Lakshmi, is all set to take the film to various film festivals before releasing it in India. "We are looking at big festivals like the Dubai and Berlin Film Festivals where we have applied for screening, and hopefully we will get into one of these. In India we are planning to release it early next year," said Kukunoor who started shooting for the film end of last year and has now wrapped up the film.

"That's the way I operate, make a film on the quiet and then talk about it when it's ready to release," quipped the director adding that the entire film has been shot in Hyderabad.

Interestingly, Kukunoor himself is playing a pimp in the film which talks about human trafficking and the plight of young sex workers.

The director who is known to play bit parts in his films emphasises that the last time he played a major role was in Hyderabad Blues which released a decade ago. "After Hyderabad Blues in which I played the lead of an NRI who returns home after 12 years, in Lakshmi I play a biggish role," he said.

Singer Monali Thakur whom he spotted at a party is playing the 14-year-old protagonist while Shefali Shah, Ram Kapoor, Satish Kaushik comprise the other cast.

"The plight of these young sex workers is the thrust of the film, an idea which came to mind because of the NGO I support. It rehabilitates such children and that's where I came across a lot of harrowing cases. The story about a 14-year-old stood out and grabbed my attention, so I wove a tale around it. The film is a fictional account of many true stories. The crux of the story is real, and the children have been through such horrid experiences that they don't speak freely about it. The film is hard, gritty and is a heroic story. It's an extremely personal film for me. I had harboured this idea for a while, knowing that tales like these are not the usual film stories and right now the spotlight has been on the atrocities committed on women. It is important to highlight them although they are hard for our society to digest it. Their heroism should be celebrated, not forgotten," he said.
