Chapter Eight - Letting It Out
I wasn't wrong when I said I wouldn't get any sleep last night. I laid awake all night staring at the ceiling. At times I even ended up conversing with her teddy bear. I was laying awake when the alarm went off. I got up and moved my door. I heard the alarm going off in Madhu's room and figured I'd be kind by turning it off. I walked out of my room and towards her door and was surprised to see her standing there. She looked tired, as though she hadn't slept all night either.
"Good morning Madhu."
"Morning."
She walked out of her room and past me to go to the bathroom at the end of the hall. I watched her but she closed the door behind herself. I walked into my room and grabbed a pair of clothes. I quickly went to the other bathroom and freshened up. Twenty minutes later, I headed down the stairs and found Madhu sitting at the table with nothing in front of her. I sat in the seat beside her and she looked at me.
"You're not eating?"
"I'm not hungry. You're going to work?"
"Yeah, I need money."
"Forget it, you're not going."
"Why not?"
"Your hand."
"If I can cook with one hand, I can go to work with one hand too. And honestly…I had forgotten my wrist was broken until you mentioned it."
"Forget it R…"
"RK?"
"Yeah, that."
"Well, let's make a deal. If you eat something, I won't go to work."
She stared at me silently but then sighed in defeat.
"Fine. PRIYA!"
"Coming ma'am!"
A few minutes later, Priya came running in with a tray of food. She placed the toast and hash browns in front of us and ran off. I placed a piece of toast in her plate and mine. She stared at it for a moment.
"Don't make me force feed you Madhu."
She sighed, picked up the piece of toast, and took a bite. About ten minutes later, she got up as I finished my last bite of toast as well.
"I'll tell Mr. Chopra you're resting. He'll understand."
"When will your shooting be done?"
"You're not my mother…but nine at night. Bye."
She walked off in silence as I kept my eyes on her. Something was off about her and I knew it had to do with the previous night. As I was lost in thought at the table, Trishna took a seat in front of me.
"Yum!"
I looked at her as she picked up a slice of toast and two hash browns and placed them in her plate. She looked up at me as I watched her. A confused expression crossed her face as I wondered if she'd be able to explain what was wrong with Madhu.
"What's up? Is there something on my face?"
She wiped her face and checked her sleeve to see nothing there, and then she looked back up at me.
"It's Madhu."
"What's wrong with her?"
"I don't know, I mean nothing."
I quickly decided not to tell Trishna about the almost kiss and chose to ask her something else.
"Nothing's wrong?"
"I mean, why's she being so kind to me?"
Trishna laughed slightly and then took a bite of her toast.
"You remind her of him."
"Him?"
"Well you see, if she hasn't told you about him, I don't think I should…but let me just say that you're one lucky guy. If your name hadn't been RK, she definitely would've had you fired for not giving her water that day."
"Just my name?"
"Yep, now before I spill the beans, I'm going to stuff my face with this food. I don't know if you'd like to witness that or not."
"No thank you."
I knew she was indirectly asking me to leave and so I got up and walked back to my room. I was quite surprised that only my name reminded Madhu of some guy. I thought back to Midhi. For some reason I refused to believe that this Madhu was my Midhi. Nothing matched up besides her name and dimples.
I sat in my room for a few hours and managed to fit in one cardio session with no exercises which involved my hand. It was night when I heard a knock at my room door. I turned to look at the door and saw Trishna standing there.
"Have you thought about flipping this room upside down?"
"Not really, I honestly like the simplicity of this room. After living in crowded streets and dirty apartments…having a simple, white room is quite comforting."
"Gosh, you're so boring! But I guess I understand."
She turned to leave when my eyes landed on the clock in my room. It read 10pm and I remembered back to Madhu telling me she'd be done shoot at nine.
"Wait, Trishna?"
She turned to look at me after I called her name.
"Is Madhu home yet?"
"No, why?"
"She was supposed to be done at nine."
"Maybe shooting ran late?"
"Hm…I doubt it. Today was just a dance sequence. Do you mind if I take a car to go check…?"
"Dude, you don't need to ask me. You live here now, do what you want."
"Thanks."
She walked out of my room and I quickly put on a pair of jeans with a black t-shirt. I rushed out of my room and out the doors. I went to the nearest driver and asked for the car keys. I was surprised when he didn't even question me and just handed the keys to me. I felt like a star then and to be honest…it felt amazing.
I got into the car and quickly drove to the one place I thought she'd be…outside the studio gates. I pulled the car to a stop outside the studio where I noticed her car. I sighed in relief when I realized she was there. I quickly stepped out into the dark night and saw her sitting on the bench lost in thought. I slowly walked towards her as she continued to stare at the ground. I took a seat next to her but she didn't look in my direction, instead she spoke quietly.
"What are you doing here…?"
"I came to check on you."
"Why?"
"I don't know…I guess I was worried."
"You drove with one hand?"
"Is it too soon for me to say that I felt like I'd do anything for you when I was at home?"
She looked up at me and I noticed she had been crying. I wanted to comfort her but I had to control myself.
"Stop. Please. Leave me alone. I don't like you."
"I know you don't. I'm sorry about last night and I want you to know it wasn't your fault."
"SHUT UP."
Her loud voice managed to startle me and I stared at her confused as she continued.
"How can you be so nice to me when I treat you like crap?!"
"I'm not sure…I guess I grew up like this…"
"And why do you keep following me?! You keep bringing back mem…"
"Memories?"
She looked in my direction again as I completed her sentence for her. She didn't say a word and I place my hand on top of hers in a comforting fashion. She looked down at our hands as I spoke again.
"Madhu. I just came to say that it's okay to open up to someone. I've been through a lot myself in life but never had anyone to speak too. I know how it feels. If you need anyone to talk to…I'm here for you. Never think that you're alone and this studio bench is the only thing that'll listen to you…because that's not true."
She looked back up at me and I noticed her expression soften slightly. She looked away though and so I decided to get up to leave. As I was walking back towards the car, she spoke.
"When I was younger…my father had an affair with my best friend's mother."
I froze in my steps as she began to open up and I confirmed that she wasn't my Midhi. There was no way my mother would've done such a thing to my father. I turned to stare at Madhu and she was staring down at the cement ground as she continued. I went to sit down next to her again.
"It's weird, I was so little yet he meant so much to me…"
"That's not weird. I had a friend like that too."
"Did she leave you?"
"No. She was taken away from me."
"Me too…I mean, they took him away from me and I never saw him again."
"I'm guessing his name was similar to mine."
"Only your initials."
"So that's why you never say my name huh?"
"Reminds me of him."
"So you don't follow your parent's rule to not dwell on the past?"
"They say they did it for me…but I know it was for them. I mean getting rid of all the pictures. It was so they wouldn't be reminded of the affair. They had separated for two years but when they got back together, they swore to never talk about the affair again."
"I'm sorry all this happened to you Madhu."
She looked at me with her tear-filled eyes. Then within the next second, she had her arms around me. It took me a minute to realize that she had hugged me, but when I did, I wrapped my arms around her and took in the first hug I had received in years. I closed my eyes and took in the scent of her hair as she spoke.
"Thank you for listening to me. It really means a lot to me."
I hugged her tighter when suddenly Midhi popped into my mind. I let her go and felt her slowly retreat from the hug as I did. She stared at me for a second and then awkwardly looked away.
"Sorry."
"No, it's fine Madhu. Now can we go home?"
She shook her head slightly and I kept my eyes on her for a moment. Then she swallowed and turned to face me with an angered expression. That caught me off guard.
"Leave. Now. I know how to get home on my own. This isn't the first time I've come here. I used to come here before I met you."
I felt pained at her change of tone suddenly but figured she was trying to suppress the past thoughts by taking on her usual personality. That's when I realized that her whole tough girl personality was a pretense…and the girl who had just opened up to me was the real Madhubala Malik. I didn't say a word and just stood up. I stared at her as she looked in the opposite direction. I sighed and walked back towards the car, leaving her there alone.
