AR Ameen’s Chennai car accident: AR Rahman’s son says he wasn’t driving, sister shares details

AR Rahman’s son and playback singer AR Ameen has spoken about the car accident he was involved in in Chennai, putting to rest confusion over his role in the incident. Ameen revealed that he was travelling to the airport when the accident took place and clarified that he was sitting in the passenger seat of his friend’s car.

The accident, which happened in the early hours of Monday near Guindy, left Ameen with minor injuries. His sister, singer-composer Khatija Rahman, also shared details of the incident and urged people reporting on it to verify information with the family.

AR Ameen says he was in the passenger seat

Hours after reports about the accident emerged, Ameen addressed the incident through a note on his Instagram Stories. He said he was travelling towards the airport with a friend when their car met with a minor accident.

Ameen specifically clarified that he was not driving the vehicle. 'Yesterday, on the way to the airport, I was in the passenger seat of my friend's car when we got into a minor accident,' he wrote.

He assured everyone that those involved were safe and expressed gratitude for what he described as divine protection. Ameen also thanked his family, friends and well-wishers for checking on him and sending prayers following the accident.

The singer said the prayers and values passed down by his grandmother, father AR Rahman and GV Prakash Kumar, whom he referred to as GV Anna, continued to guide him. He added that he hoped to carry their teachings with him.

Khatija Rahman explains what happened

Ameen also reshared a statement posted by his sister Khatija, who provided a clearer account of how the collision occurred.

According to Khatija, Ameen was travelling in the passenger seat while his friend was behind the wheel. She said another vehicle ahead of them moved through a red signal, resulting in the collision.

Khatija confirmed that Ameen, his friend and the occupant of the other vehicle were all safe. She also thanked everyone who had expressed concern and asked media outlets and others sharing information about the incident to check the facts with the family before reporting, saying inaccurate details could cause unnecessary worry.

What police said about the Chennai accident

The police version of the incident differed on one key detail. Police told HT that Ameen was driving the luxury SUV when it collided with a hatchback operated by a cab aggregator near Guindy at around 3.30 am.

The hatchback was travelling on the left side of the road and allegedly entered the main lane, leading to the crash. Ameen, his friend and the other driver suffered minor injuries and received basic first aid.

There were no fatalities in the accident. Police seized both vehicles and registered cases under the Motor Vehicle Act, including provisions relating to causing injury and rash or negligent driving.

While the accident left Ameen with minor injuries, his statement and Khatija’s clarification have now offered the family’s account of what happened. Most importantly, Ameen confirmed that everyone involved was safe.
