Movie Review: Apna Sapna Money Money

By Taran Adarsh, November 10, 2006 - 16:08 IST

Lock your brains in the cupboard, throw your thinking caps out of the window, fasten your seat belts, hold your breath…

Sangeet Sivan, the man behind the thoroughly enjoyable madcap entertainer KYAA KOOL HAI HUM, is ready to unleash his new masaledaar entertainer on money and diamonds. His new outing, APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY, belongs to the same family as K2H2, but the difference is, there're eleven characters this time around. Oh yes, there's a dog too this time!

Years ago, Brij Sadanah made a rib-tickling comedy with Ashok Kumar and Pran called VICTORIA NO. 203. It was all about the precious diamonds being hidden in a horse carriage [Victoria]. APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY also charters a similar path. A gangster's moll hides the booty in her sandal and the assorted eleven characters, not remotely connected to one another, come lusting for it [diamonds] in the end.

Write your own movie review of Apna Sapna Money Money and win exciting prizes

Sivan's fundas are evident at the very outset. APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY is not for those looking for path-breaking cinema. APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY is not for the pseudo critics. APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY is not for the hi-gentry that loves to pop champagne at Page 3 events.

It's for the aam junta that looks for non-stop entertainment.

APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY rests on a waferthin plot, but is loaded with nonsensical [and juvenile] humor that makes you laugh at regular intervals. Sure, this comic caper has too many characters and Sivan and writer Pankaj Trivedi's narrative goes on and on in the second hour. Also, the climax loses its sheen for this very reason [all eleven characters need to have a conclusion after all]. But you overlook the flaws since APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY was never in the race for the Oscars!

To sum up, APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY is a decent time pass flick that delivers what it promises: Tadka [glamour], jhatka [skin show], masti [jokes], mazaak [laughter]… most importantly, the escapism form of entertainment that appeals to the hoi polloi.

APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY revolves around a bunch of madcap characters that eat, drink, sleep and worship money. The story revolves around a mechanic [Shreyas Talpande], a conman [Ritesh Deshmukh], a dancer [Koena Mitra], an upright cop [Suniel Shetty], an obsessed father [Anupam Kher] and his homely daughter [Riya Sen], a tabela owner [Rajpal Yadav], a ruthless gangster [Chunkey Pandey], a deadly don [Jackie Shroff] and his moll [Celina Jaitley] and an unpredictable dog [Casper].

If one runs after money, the other runs after love and the one who runs after love eventually runs after money. A dramatic turn evolves when all the characters start looking for hidden diamonds that are worth Rs. 50 crores.

APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY defies logic from start to end. Writer Pankaj Trivedi borrows characters and incidents from real and reel life to make a funny film. A few jokes are indeed amusing, but there are times when the gags fail to evoke mirth.

Ritesh and Anupam's scenes are hilarious. So is the Rajpal Yadav track [he does a takeoff on Big B from SARKAR]. Chunkey's portions also make you flex your facial muscles. But the love story [Shreyas-Riya] looks lifeless, the Ritesh-Koena prem kahani is equally listless, the don [Jackie] is reduced to a caricature and the climax, which should've been thoroughly enjoyable, falls flat.

What also goes against the film is that the narrative lacks the consistent wit-n-humor of KYAA KOOL HAI HUM. Sivan's execution of the subject is perfect and the idea to make Ritesh change into various get-ups is indeed brilliant. In fact, Ritesh's final get-up [of Shreyas' aunt] is the best part of the enterprise. But how one wishes Sivan would've Opted for fewer characters, [ii] Utilized the dog in some way or the other, [iii] Opted for a better climax.

Pritam's music is strictly komsi-komsa. Barring the title track, the film lacks the hit tunes one associates with Mukta Arts' productions. Ramji's cinematography is eye-filling. Dialogues are enjoyable at times, but corny at places.

APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY has so many characters that it's difficult to carry each one home after the show has concluded. But if there's one actor who's bound to make heads turn with a smash performance, it's Ritesh Deshmukh. It's a challenge for any actor to portray multiple roles in one film, but Ritesh gets to portray four here and he takes to each role with relish, enjoying every bit of it. He works the best as Shreyas' aunt who flirts with Anupam Kher.

Anupam Kher is in terrific form yet again. In fact, Anupam is so good here, you actually wonder if anyone else would've been able to carry off the part with as much flourish. Chunkey Pandey is fantastic. After watching him in APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY, all you want to ask him is, Where were you hiding all this while? Rajpal Yadav delivers yet another knockout performance that's sure to be talked about. Suniel Shetty is lovable as the honest cop.

Amongst ladies, Celina Jaitley is the best of the lot. She looks gorgeous and enacts her role with rare confidence. The girl is gradually evolving into a fine actor. Koena Mitra is alright. But the writer hasn't done justice to her part. Even Riya Sen is relegated to the backseat.

Jackie Shroff doesn't work. Shreyas Talpade's role is oh-so-clean, which looks fake in a film of this genre. However, he enacts his part well. Sanjay Mishra is competent. Vrajesh Hirjee, Vijay Patkar, Bobby Darling and Avtar Gill lend decent support.

On the whole, APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY is a time pass entertainer targeted at the aam junta. Don't look for logic in the film and chances are you wouldn't be disappointed. At the box-office, the patronage by its target audience [masses and youth] as also a favorable opening response should help this medium-budget film make decent profits in the final tally.

Ritesh rescues Apna Sapna Money Money

Sukanya Verma | November 10, 2006 19:57 IST

The makers of Apna Sapna Money Money expect you to burst into laughter every time this happens:

Colorful lingerie pops out during drug raids and passenger suitcases. Two goons misinterpret A helping B try a pair of sandals as something sexual.

A wannabe don with a Sarkar hangover tries to do a Big B. A bunch of Nepali gang lords, dressed as a cross between a pathan and a dacoit, speak in Nepali. A Goan gal speaks in the 'humko humara mummy ne bola' language peculiar to Bollywood. A bumbling police inspector plucks out food from his greasy teeth.

It gets worse: A curious camera reveals a bored buffalo's tense butt in full glory. And then, a live telecast of his fresh potty deliveries. But that's not all: Later, a guy tries to find a lost address in the dry feces.

Suspension of disbelief is a minor formality if you plan to sit through director Sangeeth Sivan's 15 reels of unlimited corn. With a dense storyline and contrived treatment, Apna Sapna Money Money is a crazy ride to nowhere.

Gimmicks like drag queen get-ups, slapstick buffoonery, comedy of confusion and sex-related jokes are passe. Money Money feels like a toast to everything out-of-date.

For starters, it's swarming with characters. You'll see more faces in this movie than on a railway platform. To cut a crowded story short, there is Carlos (a thoroughly under-utilised Jackie Shroff), a bankrupt underworld chieftain from Bangkok, anticipating the arrival of his sexy girl Friday, Sania (Celina Jaitley) with his precious bag of diamonds. Inspector Namane (Suniel Shetty) is on her trail but gets tricked each and every time.

Back in Mumbai, you have a forbidden romance brewing between car mechanic Arjun (Shreyas Talpade) and Pandit Shastri's (Anupam Kher, in an extension of his role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) holier-than-thou daughter, Shivani (Riya Sen). To give his love story a happy ending, Arjun seeks the assistance of his cousin, Kishen (Ritesh Deshmukh) a colourful rogue with a knack for trouble (a Nepali gang headed by Chunky Pandey is after his blood) and a penchant for interesting getups.

During one such avatar, Kishen pretends to be Arjun's aunty, Sania and finds an instant lovestruck admirer in Shastri. Kishen, the male version, hits it off with the feisty Julie (Koena Mitra). Meanwhile, he's unknowingly bearing the bag containing diamonds. The name Sania only adds to the whole confusion.

The caper rests hugely on Ritesh Deshmukh's shoulders to rake in the laughs. And the actor doesn't let anyone down. From being a loopy-eyed third hero in Masti to playing lead hero -- and heroine, if you please -- here, the actor just keeps growing in confidence and talent. He is rollicking in his makeovers, especially that of a woman. And what a woman he is. Not only does he look pretty batting his fake eyelids and pouting those perfectly painted lips, he is enjoyably flippant.

Other actors just bide their time and fill the scenes whilst Ritesh takes complete charge. He evokes chuckles time and again despite constant flaws in the screenplay and a daft lack of wit.

His co-star Shreyas Talpade is confined to playing the conventional boy-next-door, and doesn't get to do any fun bits. But the Iqbal star is earnest enough for the job.

As can be expected, Celina, Koena and Riya merely ooze oomph and add glamour to the proceedings.

Chunky Pandey is amusing and maintains a funny accent all throughout. Ditto for Sunil Shetty, quite a comic here. But Rajpal Yadav takes the cake. The man has you in splits with his hilarious take on Big B in Sarkar. Wonder what Ram Gopal Varma has to say about this.

Pritam's compositions are staid and lack the rhythm required to complement a comedy. Still, The rocking Jai jai money is an exception to the point and is used effectively in the backdrop.

Basically, Apna Sapna Money Money is a run-of-the-mill flick, but with a first-rate performance from Ritesh Deshmukh.

Apna Sapna Money Money (2006)
Rating: (2.5/5)
Language: HINDI
Genre: Comedy
Director: Sangeeth Sivan
Producer: Subhash Ghai
Cast: Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Ritesh Deshmukh, Riya Sen, Celina Jaitley, Koena Mitra, Chunky Pandey
Music: Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani, Pritam Chakraborty
Cinematography: T Ramji
Editing: Bunty Nagi, Chirag Jain
Screenplay: Pankaj Trivedi
Story/Writer: Sangeeth Sivan
Art Direction: R Verman
Action: Horse Babu

The only reason a person will watch this movie, would be Ritesh Deshmukh and I am not any exceptional case in this. After seeing the movie trailers everywhere it assured me one thing that, let the movie be bad but I am sure Ritesh is going to make me laugh like hell and it proved to be true.

The movie revolves around characters:

1. Carlos (Jackie Shroff) who is a Don and is expecting diamonds worth Rs. 50 crore smuggled by his gang member Sania (Celina Jaitly).

2. Shivani (Riya Sen) and Arjun (Shreyas Talpade) are in love but Shivani's dad (Anupam Kher) is obstacle for them. Arjun seeks help of his cousin, Kishen (Ritesh Deshmukh) who is one of the biggest frauds in Goa.

3. Krishna runs away from Goa to Mumbai in train. Incidentally Sania also lands up in the same train, same coach with (diamonds hidden in shoe box).

4. Inspector Namane (Sunil Shetty) who gets information about Sania and he trace Sania out. Sania hides the shoe box in the bag of Krishna to save herself. Namane takes her to police station for checkup.

5. Now, the diamonds are with Kishen (who does not know about it), Kishen is in Mumbai to help Arjun. Carlos is looking around for Sania for the diamonds, he takes help of local goon (Rajpal Yadav).

6. On the other hand Nepali gangster (Chunky Pandey) is also looking for Kishen who ran away with his money.

Now imagine, they all meet up . What a mess it would be!! But it was fun. The movie totally belongs to Ritesh Deshmukh, who heads like a warrior in the battlefield alone. The Sonia aunty part played by Ritesh was just remarkable, it will make anyone laugh. Even Rajpal Yadav and Chunky Pandey did very good job. But the movie has its own share of laughter and flaws. There was no need to bring in emotional stuff in the movie, it just makes the things worse when emotions disturb pure comedy. The movie lags in first 1 hour. The songs make things even worse. But again, the movie makes you laugh like hell.

To sum it up:

Story: Simple story, nothing great but the it was more about comedy then the story. Leave the brains at home. Story also has few double meaning talks too.

Music: Bad!! Period.

Acting: Ritesh Deshmukh rocked, Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Sunil Shetty, Chunky Pandey were good. Riya Sen, Koena Mitra, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitly, Jackie Shroff did not have much to do but did their job well.

Overall I would give this movie 2.5 stars out of 5

Prediction Meter: Word of mouth is the only thing which can save the movie. It might not be a hit but I think it should recover the costs easily.

THE posters outside the theatre for Apna Sapna Money Money showcase the stars, and inform you that it's been directed by Sangeeth Sivan, that it has music by Pritam and lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed, and that it's been produced by Raju Farooqui. Notice anyone missing? Yes, just the... writer! It's a telling reflection on a comedy when its publicity highlights the lyricist – because that's what we walk into comedies for, you see... great lyrics! – and not the person responsible for the all-important structure and the gags. And the writer returns the favour with material that plays as if an out-of-form Priyadarshan remade Victoria No. 203, with a bigger cast (including a fun Ritesh Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Koena Mitra, Riya Sen, plus a dog) in search of hidden diamonds and true love. It's tough to say what's more painful, listening to a model-perfect Koena Mitra try her hand at tapori-speak, or the shameless attempts to jerk tears through a little girl with a hole in the heart. But there are three good gags, and if you still want to watch the movie, stop reading right now. One's when a goon threatens a girl, "Mujhse takrayegi to nau maheene pachtayegi." (Yes, yes, it's horribly misogynistic, but some of the best comedy is the really offensive kind.) The second is a truly terrible PJ, when cops go in search of drugs and discover instead a crate containing undergarments and a sweetener. (Bra 'n' sugar. Get it?) And the last one's an absolute howler, when someone's being tortured with ice and claims he felt nothing because, "Mard ko sard bhi nahin hota." What a great play on that iconic Bachchan line! Don't you wonder sometimes how dull life would be without pop culture?

Apna Sapna Money Money
Cast: Riteish Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitly
Direction: Sangeeth Sivan
Rating: **

If you're dithering about seeing a film titled Apna Sapna Money Money and need to read a review to decide, man, you're a born loser. So let's admit straight off, that you're reading this review for time pass, I'm writing it for time pass, and yes, the movie is fully faltu, fully paisa vasool time pass.

Takhliya, if you're the kind that can't handle broad comedy-the opening sequence has Riteish Deshmukh telling a man in a dhoti sitting with his knees askew, "Apni dhoti ka a/c bandh kar." If you can do with broad comedy without flinching, it's a bellyful of laughs.

Riteish shines as a conman who switches half a dozen disguises including some drag acts, as assorted love stories tangle improbably with assorted people trying to retrieve missing diamonds – that have been slipped in a passing innocent's bag, as in Half Ticket with Kishore Kumar.

Director Sangeeth Sivan, who directed Kya Kool Hain Hum, has a flair for situational comedy and draws splendid performances from his ensemble cast, including a Labrador. Shreyas Talpade plays a mechanic in love with the samnewali khidkiwali (Riya Sen), Celina Jaitly plays Sania Badnam, moll of Don Carlos (Jackie Shroff, looking alarmingly like Vijay Mallya overseeing his swimsuit calendar shoot – shades, gold chains and all).

Pritam's songs are catchy (Show me the money) and stylishly picturised and very hot. Above all, the references to Sarkar and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge will have you in splits.

Apna Sapna Money Money **

Comedy has become big business in Bollywood of late. There are the Priyadarshan confusion riots, the Hrishikesh Mukherjee hearkening Munnabhais and Khoslas, and then there are the low-budget slapstick-y Mastis and Kya Kool Hai Hums. No prizes for guessing which group Apna Sapna Money Money belongs to, but the fact remains that making a comedy and raking in the moolah has become a lucrative and simple mantra in Bollywoodland, and Mukta Arts too sees this as a quick way of creating funds for the higher budget outings they intend to invest in.

In which case, who better to create a low budget slapstick than Sangeeth Sivan, the man who surprised everyone when Kya Kool Hai Hum hit the big time? Apna Sapna Money Money is a by-the-numbers comedy with all the ingredients that are deemed 'funny' by the makers. A hapless boy next door in love, a garibon ki basti, a smart-alec hero, a silly villain, plentiful cleavage and thunder thighs, a drag act (coupled with an oldie falling for the 'woman'), 'karodon ke heeray', innuendo laden gags, a confusion laden climax where everyone runs around, a hapless guy who gets punched a lot, and, of course, Rajpal Yadav.

There are some new things added to the milieu which range from interesting (Nepali Gorkhas as an organized ring) to the plain silly (there are many, but a glaring example is a close-up of a buffalo's behind), and all this is served in a riot of colors and a loud background score.

The entire discussion of the film's merit is moot, however, as this is the kind of film everyone knows what to expect of. The people who enjoy this kind of comedy will enjoy the movie's plentiful gags, and the ones who do not have a fair idea of the film and will stay away. Another Munnabhai this is not. This is a film that knows its target audience, and serves up all kinds of funny to please them. Even if the plot and treatment borders on the silly.

Apna Sapna Money Money is about a hapless next door mechanic Arjun (Shreyas Talpade), who is smitten by the sweet girl next door Shivani (Riya Sen), whose father, the reverent but half blind Pandit Shastri (Anupam Kher) does not approve.

To help him get his girl, Arjun asks his cousin to help him. The cousin, Kishan (Ritesh Deshmukh), is a con man with a disguise fetish, and agrees to come help him when his latest scam invites the ire of local Gorkhas, led by Rana (Chunkey Pandey).

Added to the mix is Sania (Celina Jaitley), who is a carrier girl for a fearsome but going-bankrupt mafioso, Carlos (Jackie Shroff). When the bumbling inspector Namane (Suniel Shetty) zeroes in on her, she hides the aforementioned 50 karodon ke heeray in a bag that Kishan picks up. Carlos decides to enlist the help of MataPrasad (Rajpal Yadav), a dairy owner with a Sarkar hangover. Then Ritesh goes ahead and does a drag act and names himself Sania as well.

Needless to say, there is a lot of running around, plenty of gags and general buffoonery before the film reaches its even more harum-scarum finale. The story is, as to be expected, only to serve up the jokes, and stops making sense long before the finale hits.

Surprisingly, despite the flawed and hole-ridden plot, the film manages to keep the gag quotient up by introducing funny lines, puns, slurs and some innuendo, most of them the crowd-pleaser variety, but some real witty ones hidden here and there. Of course, the gags would have been a waste if the cast could not keep up with the racy script.

That is thankfully not the case. Ritesh manages to carry most of the film on his shoulders with a confident and irreverent performance that keeps the film fresh. Shreyas gets the thankless job of swooning and pining, but does that with earnestness. Koena and Celina are meant to look pretty and flash cleavage all around, and do what they are paid for.

Jackie has a funny bone that is not used well here, but the most criminal is Rajpal's short run. His is the most madcap character and his chemistry with Sunil Pal is palpable. Despite being the funniest thing about Apna Sapna..., he is underutilized, and you wish for more of him.

Despite a serviceable cast and a gag-laden script, the film never tries to reach higher. It is content with being another low-budget mass-friendly comedy which will be forgotten almost immediately. That is the movie's single greatest strength, as it serves up the entertainment it set out to, but also its single greatest flaw as it never creates a witty enough or funny enough ambiance. It revels in being mediocre and silly, and while there is nothing wrong with that, the fact that Sivan doesn't even try hard, hurts.

Ultimately Apna Sapna… is a piece of junk food. It's a guilty pleasure that you know will not be filling or nutritious. Yet, as long as you can enjoy the taste of it, you take a bite. You just wish there was more of a kick to the chutney. And less of the buffalo behinds.
