THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 42
When Khushi woke up in the morning and looked at the clock, she remembered that Anjali would be joining Siddharth's office. She had promised Anjali that she would accompany her.
She took a salwar from her wardrobe and went to the bathroom. She had a long hot shower. When she was about to walk out of the bathroom, something in the mirror caught her eye.
There was a message. The steam from her hot shower had covered the mirror on all places except on the places where Arnav had used his finger to write something. It said,
'You can sleep well by hugging my shirt while I am restless every night. So, it is only fair that I try to sleep with something of yours. I stole what I want from your wardrobe. I know you wouldn't mind, Khushi Raina. Don't tell my wife.'
Her cheeks turned red when she read the message. She smiled and went to check what was missing. Within a couple of minutes, she found that her peacock blue dupatta was missing. She remembered that she had worn that salwar the day when she had told him that she would not forgive him and had returned to Mumbai with Siddharth.
She picked her mobile and ran down the stairs when she heard Siddharth calling for her.
"Chalein?" he asked her. [Shall we go?]
"Laila ko lene?" she asked him with a teasing grin. [To pick up Laila?]
He twisted her ears and said, "Now-a-days, you have become too naughty."
"Patha hai." [I know.]
They went to Shantivan to pick up Anjali and then went to Siddharth's new office. He had purchased an already built building and made changes to it. It was a perfect replica of his Mumbai version with a much better interior. He had shelled out money to make the workers work fast and the building was worth the money.
He gave Anjali a tour around the office. Khushi had left them alone as she had already been to his office a lot of times. She went to meet Jia, a friend she had made when she was in Mumbai.
After the tour, Siddharth took her to his cabin where Jia and Khushi were waiting for him.
Jia saw him and hugged him. "Nice to see you after a long time. You look the same. Smart and dashing."
He smiled and said, "You have not changed either. In fact, more beautiful than the last time I saw."
Khushi saw them and noticed Anjali's reaction too. She could say Anjali was not comfortable. She didn't know whether the discomfort was due to the flirting which she was not used to or due to Jia hugging Siddharth. She decided to find out.
"If your boyfriend girlfriend talk is over, can we do something more productive? Like show di her room?"
"Boyfriend girlfriend?" Anjali asked him.
Khushi gave herself a mental pat on her shoulder. She was certain that Anjali did not like Jia hugging Siddharth. She had expected some sort of a reaction as days passed on. But she sure hadn't expected it so soon.
Siddharth gave Khushi a questioning look and then told Anjali, "If Jia was my girlfriend, I wouldn't still be single. Jia, meet Anjali, my college junior and friend. Anjali, this is Jia. She was the head of our creative department. Now, she supervises all the departments and submits reports to me. She is also my personal secretary."
Jia gave Anjali a warm smile and said, "Jia Raichand."
"Anjali Raizada," she said as she shook Jia's hand.
"Raizada? You mean, Arnav Singh Raizada's sister?"
She nodded.
She had a dreamy look when she said, "You don't know how much I love him."
"Jia," Khushi said with a glare.
"I was just kidding, babes," she said with a naughty smile.
"We need to work," Siddharth reminded them.
"You have a lot of girls around you, Siddhu," Khushi told him.
"Khushi," he warned her.
He realized that she worked on a plan of her own.
"Okay.... Okay.... I am leaving."
When they left his cabin, Siddharth pulled Khushi back inside and asked, "What was that all about?"
"What?" she asked with an innocent look.
"Boyfriend girlfriend?"
"That was for di."
"That is what I am asking. Why did you say something like that in front of her?"
"She didn't like Jia hugging you, Siddhu."
"So?"
"So, I tried to....."
"Make her jealous."
She nodded with a smile. "Isn't that lesson number one in love?"
He had a serious expression on his face when he said, "Sweetheart, I have waited for a really long time for this and it is a miracle that she is with me now. Don't do anything that might backfire on me."
"Siddhu, don't worry. Nothing will happen."
"I'll hold you to that."
Jia had a room of her own. Khushi, Anjali and a couple of men by the name Shankar and Vijay shared a room. As Anjali wanted to work from Stage one and then move her way up, Siddharth decided that Vijay and Shankar could join her. Their job was to give new ideas for the PR department while Khushi's job was to review set designs and make necessary changes to it. Whenever Siddharth was free, he made sure that he explained all about his office and its working so that it would be easier for Anjali to learn about everything.
Just before lunch time, Khushi dialled Arnav's number and waited for him to attend her call. The phone rang till the last ring and went to voice mail.
"Hey, Arnav! This is Khushi. Your wife told me that you are free for about a month. I am delighted. When can we meet? By the way, I found what you took from my wardrobe. Call me whenever you are free."
Her phone rang a few minutes later. The call was from Arnav.
"Khushi Raina, you are the only person who can make me ignore a big deal and call you to listen to your voice."
"Ooohhh..... Koi aaj bahut romantic mood mein hai." [Ooohhh.... Somebody is very romantic today.]
"Tumare bina romantic nahi. Desperate hoon. When can we meet?" [Without you, it is not romantic. It is desperate. When can we meet?]
"Kabhi bhi chupke chupke mil sakthe hain." [We can meet anytime without anyone finding out.]
"You know what? This affair thing is too good. Looks like I could find another girl too."
That didn't sit well with Khushi. She said, "No problem, Arnav. Before choosing somebody for yourself, I have a couple of men in line. Shankar and Vijay. I don't know which one to choose. Both are handsome. Vijay has got big muscles. Shankar has a cute dimple and...."
"Stop it, Khushi," he almost shouted even though he knew that she was kidding.
"Laad governor," she muttered under her breath.
There was complete silence from the other side.
"Arnav....?"
Khushi heard nothing. The call was disconnected.
She wondered whether she had gone too much. She called him again but the mechanical voice said that his phone was switched off. She decided to make it up to him later as she wanted to clear her mind.
At that time, a junior designer brought her a sketch and she took it to Siddharth. Anjali was in his room with a few files in her hand. When they were in the middle of the discussion, the door flew open and Arnav walked in.
The expression on his face was hard to decipher. He ignored his sister and Siddharth and went to Khushi. He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tight. Pain radiated from him and Khushi sensed that.
"Arnav....?"
"I am sorry, Khushi."
Anjali and Siddharth shared a concerned look.
Khushi tried to push him a little away so that she could look at him. But he didn't let her. He hugged her tighter.
"Mujhse sorry kyun keh rahe ho? [Why are you saying sorry to me?] " she asked him. "I shouldn't have included Shankar and Vijay in our discussion."
"Uss ke liye nahi. [Not for that.] " A small pause later, he said, "Don't push me away, Khushi. I am sorry."
All three were shocked. They didn't understand anything. Khushi looked at the other two for help.
This time, she hugged him tighter and said, "Arnav, you are scaring me. Please batao kya hua." [Please tell me what happened?]
Anjali stroked his hair and said, "Chote, kya hua tume?" [Chote, what happened to you?]
He slowly removed his hands from her and looked at his sister. He looked as if he would break down any moment.
"She just called me Laad Governor, di."
None of them understood what he was saying.
He looked at Khushi and said, "And I never told her that she used to call me by that name."
A lone tear dropped down his cheeks.
They had come a long way from where they started. Anger had changed to jealousy which in turn turned to love and then back to anger again due to the obsession of a married man. Even though he was paying for his sins and Arnav and Khushi were truly, deeply and madly in love with each other, what had happened had left behind scars in both of them. However hard they tried to conceal it, it showed its head once in a while.
Arnav was frightened that she had remembered all the cruel things he did to her.
Khushi wiped his tear with her thumb and said, "You told me, remember? That you will turn all my bad memories into good ones and make them worth remembering. When I remember..... If I remember, main tumara paas hi aaongi. Baagne ki kosish zaroor nahi karongi. [If I remember, I will come to you. I will not try to run away from me.] I don't even know how I called you 'Laad Governor'. It just came."
When he didn't say anything, she kissed his forehead and said, "I love you." She pouted and said, "Mujhe bhi yeh water bucket Arnav pasand nahi hai." [I also hate this water bucket Arnav.]
Another tear rolled down his cheek and she said, "If you don't stop this now, I will seriously think about Shankar and Vijay."
He wiped his tear and said, "Let's see, Khushi Raina."
Her cheeks and nose turned a little red as she remembered their conversation about marriage with Khushi Singh Raizada and an affair with Khushi Raina.
Siddharth stepped aside to attend a phone call and was back within thirty seconds.
"Stay here for lunch," Anjali told him.
Siddharth answered before Arnav could. "No, he is not staying here. Arnav, you ran away from a meeting. Go back and attend it. Looks like they are giving Akash a hard time."
Arnav realized that he had to go. Before going, he said, "Di, you have to tell me about your first day tonights."
"Yeah, di," Khushi said. "He has to know how cool his SJ is."
"My DJ is not bad either," Siddharth supported him.
"Thanks, SJ," Arnav said with a quick hug and left.
Later in the evening, there was a problem with the interior designer and the workers. Siddharth managed the situation and asked Jia, Khushi and Vijay to keep an eye on them as he had an important call to make.
After the call, when he went to the other room, he found Anjali standing near the window. He stood close to her and noticed tears pooled in her eyes.
He looked at her and said, "It is not as easy as you think, Anjali."
The unshed tears found a way to escape her eyes and she wiped it.
"Sorry. I was just thinking."
He turned to look at the city in front of him through the window.
"It is not as easy as you think. You can't stuff everything within you and go on as if you are absolutely fine. It has to come out. You didn't tell anybody what you really felt. Agar mujhpe barosa hai, toh mujhse share karo. [If you trust me, then share it with me.] You will feel better."
"I'll think about it."
"You deserve to be happy and you will be happy if you let someone in."
"The thought itself is frightening," she told him honestly. "I don't think I have the courage to do the same mistake again."
"Pehli baar tumari ghalthi nahi. Majboori thi. If you let your fear conquer you, then this time, it will be your mistake." He looked at her and said, "When Khushi told me that she was frightened, I told her one thing. Kuch sawaalon ka jawaab dimaak se nahi, dil se sochna chahiye. Tumari guzare hui kal ke liye aane wali kal ko sacrifice math karo. Iss baar faisla sirf tumari haath mein hai. Khushi se jeena hai, ya puraani yaadon ko leker roz marna hai.... The decision is yours." [For some questions, you have to think with your heart and not with your mind. You shouldn't sacrifice your tomorrow for yesterday. This time, the decision is only in your hands. Live with happiness or die everyday with your old memories..... The decision is yours.]
Before leaving the room, he said, "You told him, didn't you? If you had said no to dadi, tumari mangalsutra aur sindoor mein kisi dhoosra aadmi ka naam hota. Abhi bhi waqt hai. Uss dhoosra aadmi ko doondne mein. Everything is up to you." [You told him, didn't you? If you had said no to dadi, then there would be somebody else's name in your mangalsutra and sindoor. There is still time. To search for the second guy. Everything is upto you.]
A few days passed. Arnav and Khushi had a lot of chupke chupke meetings. Everone was happy as they saw a cheerful Arnav and they knew that Khushi was the reason behind it.
Anjali thought about what Siddharth told her. She knew that he was right. Somehow the fear of betrayal was more than the expectation of a happy tomorrow.
NK joined AR office and worked in the finance department. He also lent ideas to the PR department and he was a star in the office. Arnav's secretary, Shilpha, was crazy over him but he didn't even spare her a second glance.
Arnav waited for the doctor in his room. He had made an appointment with Khushi's doctor a couple of days ago. He was worried about her memory and he was very restless. He decided to speak with the doctor about his worries.
The doctor was called on an emergency at the last minute and Arnav was told that he would have to wait for thirty minutes.
After that long wait, the doctor arrived.
"Sorry to have kept you waiting, Mr. Raizada."
"No problem. You can call me Arnav."
"Tell me, Arnav. What is it that's bothering you?" He jumped straight into the topic.
"It's about Khushi's memory." He explained about their phone call. "I don't know how it happened and she doesn't know either. Will everything come back?"
"Is that fear I hear in your voice, Arnav?"
"What else will there be when I have behaved nothing less than a monster with her?"
"Do you want her memory to return? Or do you want to hide it from her?"
"Right now, that is not my problem. I have already told her everything about us and I trust our love. It is just not love. It is something beyond that where we have no barriers between us. The point is, even though I am frightened of the prospect of her memory returning back.... that is not the main thing I am worried about." He paused for a second to collect his thoughts. "When I met her for the second time and brought her into my life, she had a lot of black outs and you know about that. It was because what happened around her triggered something in her brain and her brain wasn't able to take it."
"That is one way to look at it. I also told you that it is how the brain will tell your body that you are thinking too much."
"I remember. Will she have blackouts again if she remembers something from our past?"
The doctor nodded. "It is possible but rare. Tell me, Arnav. Are you really worried about the black outs?"
"I don't think I have the strength to look at her lying on a hospital bed with a lot of needles stuck in her veins. I saw it twice and the third time...." He shook his head and said, "I am not even able to think about it."
"What do you think was the reason behind her calling you by that nick name?"
"I shouted at her even though I knew that she was kidding about a few things."
"When was the last time you shouted at her? What happened to her at that time?"
He thought about it. He thought about the day when she had brought dessert for him and he had shouted at her to not enter his room as she didn't have any right. Then he had heard her telling Anjali that she had to go as she had a headache. He told what had happened to the doctor.
The doctor said, "It looks like whenever the Arnav she met in the beginning comes in front of her, something about your past comes to her." When he saw Arnav's worried look, he said, "It is not a bad thing, Arnav. Just stay by her side. That is the best medicine she ever needs."
They spoke for a little while and before Arnav left, the doctor asked, "Are you really not worried about the thought that her memory might return? I know, I am asking about it a lot of times. Still, I want to know. More than that, you have to know the answer."
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and then looked at the doctor. "No, doctor. I am not worried. No matter what happens, I will always be there by her side. If and when her memory returns, I will be there by her side and face whatever the consequence is. If it does not, no big deal. Whatever happens, we have a life ahead." He smiled at the doctor and said, "Together."
The doctor smiled and nodded.
