Before they were able to continue their discussion, Siddharth's phone rang. The screen displayed an unknown number.
He pressed the answer button and said, "Hello!"
"Siddharth," he heard Khushi's voice.
"Khushi," he said in relief. "Where are you, sweetheart? We are worried. Kahaan ho tum?" [Where are you?]
"Woh letter…" [That letter…]
The call ended and all he heard was silence.
"Khushi," he called. "Khushi, can you hear me?"
"It was Khushi. I don't know what happened. The call got disconnected," he told the two brothers as he dialled the same number again.
He heard a recorded voice which said, 'the number you are trying to reach is currently switched off. Please try again later.'
"What did she say?" Arnav asked him.
"She was about to say something about the letter." He looked at the two brothers and said, "How did you get the letter?"
"It was the driver, Siddharth," Akash told him. "He told us that he came here with Khushi a quarter of an hour back. We were shocked. Khushi didn't come to bhai's cabin. Then he gave us this letter and told us that he found it in the back seat."
"The driver," Arnav said. "Akash, ask the security whether the driver is still here. I want to see him right now."
Akash ran to the car park to see whether the driver was there.
He then asked Siddharth, "What did Khushi say?"
"She started to tell me something about the letter and then…," his voice trailed off.
He stared at the letter and then at the phone. Arnav shook his shoulders to get a response from him.
"She never calls me Siddharth," he muttered under her breath.
"Kya?" [What?]
"Khushi ne abhi abhi mujhe Siddharth kaha. [Khushi just called me Siddharth.] She has never done that before. I have always been Siddhu for her. Soon after her operation, she called me Sir for a while. It then changed to Siddhu and it has always been like that since then."
His phone rang again. It was the same number.
Arnav plucked the phone from his hand and attended the call. "Khushi, can you hear me? Say something."
There was nothing but silence from the other side. A few seconds later, the call disconnected.
"Something is wrong, Siddharth."
His cabin phone rang. It was Akash.
"Driver chalagaya, bhai." [Driver has gone, bhai.]
Arnav slammed the receiver. He raked his hand through his hair and thought about Khushi. He had promised that he would protect her and somehow, it looked like he had failed.
He dialled Neel's number.
"Hello ASR!"
"Neel, I need your help."
ASR 'needed' his help? "There is a first time for everything," he mumbled to himself.
"What can I do for you?"
"I'll give you a number. Find out whose number it is."
Siddharth opened the received calls list and showed it to Arnav. He recited the number to Neel.
"This is urgent, Neel. My wife is missing and she is in trouble. Please, do it soon."
"Have you called the police, ASR?"
"Not yet, Neel."
"I'll do one thing. I'll find out about the number and then talk with my friend, Richard. He is an Inspector. I'll bring him to your office."
Arnav accepted. "Thanks, Neel."
Khushi dreamt about her dinner with Arnav when the driver took a wrong turn. Her subconscious mind warned her and she looked around.
"Yeh ghalat raastha hai, hain na?" she asked the driver. [This is the wrong route.]
"Police ne us raastha ko block kar diya. Is liye." [Police have blocked that route. That's why.]
The driver took a lot of turns and stopped in a dark alley in front of a big garage.
"Why have you stopped here?" she asked.
The driver stayed silent.
Suddenly, a well built man opened the back door. When she tried to run, he caught her wrist and pulled her out of the car. She struggled against his hold but he was much stronger than her. Another man, shorter than the first, walked out of the garage with a pen and a paper in one hand and a pistol in the other. She looked at the pistol and her eyes widened in shock.
He gave the paper to her and said, "Write what I say."
She took the paper and stared at him.
"Write 'I am leaving, Arnav. I hate you for…'"
"No," she shouted. "I won't."
"You won't?"
She shook her head. "No."
He pressed the pistol on her temple and asked, "How about now?"
She shook her head again. "I will not do this to him."
"What if the bullet in his pistol hurts Arnav?" He pointed at the driver and said, "You know this driver well, don't you?"
Khushi looked at the driver and he gave her a sorry look.
"He brought you here. Do you think we don't have other people in Arnav's company who might finish him off?"
The initial shock paved way to fear. Fear for her Arnav's life.
"So let's try again. I dictate and you write."
He dictated and she wrote whatever he said. Her heart broke into bits when she wrote that. She hoped that Arnav would trust her and realize that she would never do this to him. Tears rolled down her cheek and she didn't have the strength to wipe them.
One of the men took the paper from her and gave it to the driver.
"You know what to do?" he asked the driver.
The driver nodded.
"You can go."
The driver had one last look at Khushi and then drove off. The shorter man plucked the phone from her hand and pocketed it. They dragged her into the garage.
The well built man opened the back door of the van and shoved her inside. He gave her an evil smile and closed the door. Darkness surrounded her. She couldn't see anything. Her desperation to escape won over her fear and she moved her hands slowly and felt the cold metal of the van. Suddenly, the engine whirred to life and the van started moving. She stumbled for a second and then regained her balance.
After a long time of continuous searching, she caught hold of something. She ran her hand over it and realized that it was a bag. She fumbled through the zips and finally found a way out of the mess she was in. It was a phone.
She curled her fingers over and wrapped her dupatta over it in such a way that it wouldn't be seen by the two men.
The van stopped in a place and the door opened. The sudden light blinded her and she blinked a few times to get used to it. The men dragged her into a building.
The building looked like an old shed. Lots of junk items filled most of the space in the shed. There were two rooms in the far end of the shed. The shorter man opened one of the rooms, pushed her in and then locked it.
She pressed her ear against the door to listen to their footsteps. When she was sure that they had left, she looked at the phone. She switched it on. Only then she noticed that the battery was nearly dead.
Without wasting any time, she dialled Siddharth's number.
"Hello!"
"Siddharth," she said.
"Khushi," he said in relief. "Where are you, sweetheart? We are worried. Kahaan ho tum?" [Where are you?]
"Woh letter…" [That letter…]
The blinked once and went black. She cursed her luck. She switched on the phone and tried again. The bell rang and she heard Arnav's voice.
"Khushi, can you hear me? Say something."
Before she was able to answer, the phone went black again. Fresh tears spilt from her eyes.
"Arnav, I love you," she said in between her sobs with the phone still pressed against her ears.
After a while, she calmed down a little and looked around the room in search of some escape strategy. The room was filled with empty oil barrels, oil cans, tyres, rope and glasses. She walked around the room as she inspected the items. She was so involved in the items that she didn't notice a small pool of oil on the floor. She stepped on it and almost slipped.
All her thoughts were around Arnav. She remembered the time when he had stood with her in the kitchen and had told her that he was there so that he could catch her if she fell.
She placed her hand on a nearby barrel for balance. The barrel did not have the lid and its edges were sharp. It sliced her palm and she winced. She slowly stepped away from the oil spill and checked her palm.
It was a small cut and wasn't very deep. She wiped the blood with her dupatta and wrapped it around her palm. She then began to search for some plan to escape.
When there was no way to escape, she leant on the wall and sat near a table.
