Chapter 12
'Perhaps a friend or may be a relative, or perhaps your mother should tell you these facts ' the words haunted him. The word Mother jarred in his ears, as he drove away fiercely.
With every mile his memories intensified/
'I think you will turn out as worthless as your Dad,
'Your Dad ruined my life. If you are like him, you will ruin some girl's life'
'Get off my lap Arnav. You are too old to be petted by your Mom'
'Arnav you have that man's blood. I really wonder if you will escape his genes and turn out to be a good person.'
Every sentence his Mom uttered came back to singe his heart.
All the lonely days of his childhood when he had longed for one embrace from her,
All those days when he had hovered around her waiting for one embrace from her,
All the times when he had beaten up the boys in his school just so that his principal complained to his mother and at least then she noticed he existed,
All those days later in high school when he had been on his best behavior just to hear one word of praise from her,
All the regular fun of teenage boys he had missed from dating to smoking to drinking to partying, so that he could impress his mother,
Every memory tore him apart, every single thing he had done to win his mother's love came back to haunt him.
Every rejection, every taunt, every grief he had suffered constricted his heart and in a mad rage he drove on, completely forgetting he had left behind a hapless girl in the middle of nowhere---
Khushi huddled behind a tree, trying to keep the terror at bay.
She knew he would come back. But when?
What if some goons came by?
Since it was totally wild with no human habitation nearby, there were lots of animals around in the nearby jungle. What if one of them attacked her?
What if she froze to death as the cold was seeping through her jacket into her very bones.
And as it started to get darker, Khushi's fears intensified.
She had thought he had left in a momentary anger and would come back immediately.
But it had been half an hour nearly and he was not back.
What if he did not come back for her?
How far had he gone?
How long would it take to get back to her?
Would she be all right till he found her?
Should she stop some car to hitch a ride?
What if the people offering her a ride were not trustworthy and turned out to be murderers or rapists?
Fear racked her slender body, as she huddled even closer to the tree
Tears rolled down her cheeks. What had she said or done to deserve this treatment?
How could someone be so cruel?
She looked up into the sky and prayed 'Devi Maiya raksha karna' (Please protect me devi maiya)
She closed her eyes and kept praying, while warding off the dizziness that seemed to be taking over her-----
Mother was a word every child thought of with a smile.
Mother is a relationship that brought joy
Mother meant unconditional love
Mother meant no judgments
Mother meant peace.
Yet whenever anyone uttered that word to him, it triggered off a violent reaction in him that brought back a world of agony, self doubts and utter misery.
Today Khushi had touched that raw nerve, a nerve he hid from the world.
The thought of Khushi made him turn towards the passenger seat to scream his head off.
It was then he came back to his senses and then he remembered
'Out!.Yes, I want you out of my car this instant,' His harsh words reverberated in his ears.
In utter horror he realized what he had done.
He had left a vulnerable girl in the middle of nowhere? Was he even human? He shuddered at the very thought of what she might be going through.
He tried calling her first.
But, the mobile rang in the car. He realized then that Khushi's handbag and mobile were in the car.
In full speed he reversed and headed towards the spot where he had abandoned her...
Khushi looked around her in daze. May be if she walked a little distance she could find some shelter?
It had been an hour and there was no sign of Arnav.
Sheer terror possessed her. She was afraid to walk on the main road, lest some lecherous passers by spotted her.
So, slowly she inched forward, keeping herself behind the trees.
All the time her desperate eyes sought signs of shelter or for Arnav's car.
She stumbled many times and shook off insects crawling from the bushes.
The stream of tears or her prayers to devi maiya never stopped, as she edged forward little by little.
In between her anger and hatred for Arnav Singh Raizada would come and give her more strength to keep moving.
'I won't let you win ASR. I can survive. I don't need you to come and save me. I don't need your mercy.' she kept chanting in between her prayers...
Arnav reached the spot in half an hour, having raced down. It was pitch dark. He screamed her name.
He searched all around the spot he had left her at.
But there was no signs of her.
He felt he would go crazy if he did not see her face. He screamed her name in sheer agony.
But there was no answer.
Terror gripped him.
Anything could have happened to her. She could have been raped or killed or injured.
The possibilities sent a chill down his spine and gave speed to his search.
Her smiling face from a few hours back kept flashing in his mind.
How happy she had been skating.
How happy she had been to come to Simla.
She did not deserve to be the victim of his bitterness or his anger at the world.
'Khushiii' he called out in sheer agony.
He got on to the car again and slowly drove down the stretch, keeping a look out for her.
Just a short distance away further down the road Khushi was still slowly inching forward.
'I hate him Devi Maiya. I hate him. But don't punish him Maiya. I don't want him to be hurt. But I don't want to see him ever again. I will not work for him anymore I don't want to set my eyes on his face' she told herself.
But even then, despite what he had done, a deep pain clenched her heart at the thought of not seeing him even for a day.
Engrossed in her thought she missed her step and tripped over a bush and felt herself fall down headlong into a pit, even as she screamed 'Devi Maiya'.
Arnav heard the scream as the car was now close to where Khushi was.
His blood froze. That was Khushi. Undoubtedly Khushi.
He stopped the car and lunged towards the area from where her scream came.
Using his mobile as a source of light he searched the bushes.
Finally he spotted her.
There she lay in a pit, in a pool of blood...
