Tough times seem to have fallen on Bollywood. In these last few months (since November), it seems as if film after film has been under-performing at the box office. The majority of the biggies in November and December starring A-list superstars have not met their expectations at the box office. With the beginning of 2013, the bad box office run continues. Almost every film that has released so far this year has been a huge flop. MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA is already the year's first big box office dissapointment, and the rest of the other films have come and gone without a trace!
Now, all hopes are on RACE 2 to save the month of January from being a complete disaster!
RACE 2, as we know, is the sequel to the first film RACE which released in 2008. That film was a Super Hit (one of the biggest hits of that year). The film is remember for quite a few reasons, amongst them being the style of the film (action scenes,etc), the music, and of course, the many twists and turns that the film had. With the first film being such a big success, expectations are obviously high for the sequel!
The trailer of RACE 2 was launched back in November, around the time when JAB TAK HAI JAAN and SON OF SARDAAR released. The trailer of RACE 2 managed to attract attention, as there were people who liked the trailer. However, since then, it seems as if there hasn't been too much promotion for the film. I will go to the extent of saying that the promotion has been dull. The soundtrack was released recently, but the songs don't seem to have caught on in a huge way. There have been no dialogue promos nor much else. With this type of dull promotion, I think there is a possibility of the film's content not being up to the mark either!
Abbas-Mustan were the captains of the ship (directors) for RACE 1 and they are directors again for RACE 2. They did really well as directors for RACE 1, so there is a possibility of them re-creating magic for RACE 2. But, it can't be forgotten that in between the two RACE films, there was another film that was directed by Abbas Mustan, and that film was PLAYERS. I liked that film, but the majority gave the film a thumbs down. Therefore, it remains to be seen what kind of response the public gives to RACE 2, it could be a good response or a bad response. If RACE 2 is liked, it could be at a universal level, because the film carries the look of an urban type of film, and the doses of action would appeal to the masses.
Now, to the box office of the film. The film should definitely take a strong opening, no doubt, and there are several reasons for that: The star cast, the RACE franchise, the theatrical trailer creating buzz, etc.
A big question that many will wonder is this: Will the film make it to the 100 crore club? That will depend on how the public feedback/word of mouth is for the film. All things considered, though, I think the film will do well at the box office.
My Box Office Predictions for RACE 2:
Opening day: 13 crores net
Opening weekend: 40+ crores net
Lifetime: 80+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Hit
I think John Abraham will make a mark as the villain. I think his performance will be liked. I liked his smirk in the trailer when he says "goodbye hero!"
Oh, and there's Cherry, erm, Amisha Patel in the film too.
