This guy loved it...
Just saw the movie and despite a few engaging moments, the film ultimately disappoints. The screenplay feels chaotic and never quite builds to a satisfying peak. While the story shows promise in the beginning, it gradually loses momentum and falls flat as it progresses. For Vishal Bhardwaj this feels like another step down after Rangoon.
The film opens in 1995 in Bombay, where we are introduced to Shahid’s character, portrayed as a gangster. The initial action sequences inside a movie theatre carry a strong hangover of Animal. It is only after Tropti’s entry that the film starts to become interesting, particularly when the narrative shifts into flashback mode.
However, the film suffers from several issues. The romance between Shahid and Triptii feels unconvincing. It remains unclear why he falls so deeply in love with her. He is shown casually sleeping with multiple women right in front of her, which weakens the intensity of his feelings and makes the romance difficult to believe.
The emotional core of the film is shallow. It is hard to connect with the lovers, and as a result, the audience hardly cares whether they unite or drift apart.
The screenplay also raises logical concerns. Several scenes seem to underestimate the audience’s intelligence. For instance, why does the villain keep Triptii captive for three months instead of eliminating her? The reasoning is never convincingly explained. Similarly, Shahid surviving a gunshot wound to the throat feels highly implausible.
That said, the film does have a few well-executed moments that leave a mark. The flashback portions involving Vikramt Massey are engaging. The twist when Triptii’s character re-emerges is handled effectively. The mystery surrounding Tamanna’s character in the climax also adds intrigue. Visually, the film has a grand appeal, especially the portions set in Spain.
Performance-wise, Shahid Kapoor delivers a decent act and shines in several scenes. Triptii Dimri surprises with a confident performance. Nana is adequate, while Avinash is unfortunately left with an underwritten role.
Overall, O Romeo is simply not up to the mark.
Rating: 2.5/5
