***Part 10***
It had been almost a week since Virat left. It was 1:00 AM in the night, he was sitting in a corner collapsed, beaten down and tired in a tent with two of his colleagues. What would have been a regular medical camp, where the doctors provided free medical services to the villagers in a remote area with no proper medical facilities, had become the most hectic and insane experiences of their lives. The whole area had become infested with a pandemic flu and the group of 15 doctors who left on the camp was barely able to control the situation. They were short on medicines, personnel and time. The situation was getting out of hand. Virat had been working round the clock and had not slept in the last 48 hours. He looked at his phone, there were a number of missed calls from Manvi. He stepped out of the tent and called her.
Manvi answered in a single ring "Virat? Kab se call kar rahi hoon? I haven't talked to you since two days. What happened, Is everything ok?"
Virat closed his eyes with his fingers and sat down, beside the camp fire. It was cold as hell. "I am fine Manvi. It is crazy over here. We are so ill-equipped to deal with this." His voice sounded, low, sad and tired.
Manvi gulped her words. She had been very worried about him. She was even a little upset he didn't call her since two days. Ever since he had gone, he didn't even have time to talk to her even for a few minutes every day. She could sense how tired he was right now, and what he had been going through. Virat seems all indifferent and technical when treating patients but losing a patient always crumbled him inside. He would deny about it when she asked him 'Doctors are not supposed to get personally attached to the patient' he always said. And this was so large, she had seen on the tv, about the pandemic flu, people were dropping like flies. "Virat, are you ok? Maybe you should get some rest. You sound very tired. I will call you back tomorrow." She said very concerned.
Virat: "Yaa, I will. How are you doing honey? Are you ok? Kuch problem toh nahi hai na?"
Manvi: "Nahi, kya problem ho sakta hai? Jo din raat pareshaan karta tha, woh toh hain nahi, so aur kya problem ho sakta hai?" she tried to lighten the conversation a little.
Virat gave a tired half-smile "hmm..."
"Virat, it's not your fault. You are doing whatever is in your hands. Your job is to give the best feasible treatment with the resources available, it doesn't always work. Tum bagwaan thodi ho and I heard they are sending more people. Don't take it personally."
"Actually woh baat bhi nahi hain, these two weeks will probably decide if I am going to get recommended to the neurology fellowship abroad or not."
Manvi: "this 2 weeks? aaise kyu?"
Virat: "Dr. Mehra himself told me, it's between me and Ankush. They are watching us closely, keeping a tally of everything. Watch how we function under crisis."
Manvi sensed something very wrong with his tone. He never spoke about his competition, he was always so confident of himself. "What's wrong Virat?" she asked.
Virat: "Kuch nahi yaar, bas aaise hi, I don't think I am going to get it this time." He stated it like it was already decided.
She just waited for him to speak up, something was bothering him and she knew it. If he sensed it was worrying her, he wouldn't confide.
He didn't speak anything for a bit. Then he started "There was this sweet little girl, so young, so fresh, so innocent, in the camp today. You would have loved her." he smiled.
" She was dying, her parents knew it, I knew it, I think even she knew it, but she kept consoling her mom, saying everything would be fine. She said her doctor, I, would save her at any cost. She called me her angel. She had blind faith in me Manvi. I couldn't leave her; Dr. Mehra had called for me so many times to attend to other patients. But, I couldn't walk away from those eyes. They were so full of hope, so full of trust, she held my finger and wouldn't let go."
"If it was any other time Manvi, I would have walked away. But, today, I spend a good part of my day with her, doing things that I knew would not work. What I did was so irresponsible. I gave the girl, the parents, and myself false hope, denying other patients of their rightful medical attention." He took a deep breath.
"What was her name?" Manvi asked.
He shut his eyes tightly "Chanchal" he said like he knew her since a long time. A tear escaped from his eyes.
"Chanchal must be with the rest of the angels, showing you to them right now, they must all be looking at you talking about what a beautiful heart Virat Vadhera has." she said slowly in a very soothing tone.
"I better watch out, I have competition now." She added playfully.
He laughed "Manvi?? you are crazy, but you already know that."
Manvi shrugged proudly "But Virat, honestly, anyone can practice medicine yaar, you study and practice on cadavers, but now you are practicing on real people. They have feelings, they are just not liver, brain, kidney; they are people with feelings. I am not saying, what you did is right, but ho jata hai yaar kabhi kabhi. What you did today, makes you a healer and this shows however detached you have trained yourself to be, you are still humane, you feel their pain, sympathize with them. You kept your promise when you said 'I will do everything in my power to save you.' You are not a robot to not feel. Are u now??"
Virat : "haaan guru maneshwarji, par healing ki chakkar main mera fellowship toh chala gaya naa"
Manvi: "you were never in the race dude, didn't you know? Woh toh mere pathi ko milne wala hai, hamesha se."
Virat: "Accha? Aaise hamesha se kaise??"
Manvi: "Bas, milne wala hai, I know, coz he is the future world's best surgeon, the doctor with the golden hands." She proudly repeated his own words, something he had been chanting ever since he joined med school and added "...and a golden heart" she added.
Virat was smiling so widely, he felt so relaxed "Manvi, baby, you are my stress ball. I wish you were here" he said.
She smiled. That was probably the first time he confessed he needed her all week. "Kaunsa ball?? Are? acchi kasi ladki ko ball banadiya tumne." She said acting offended.
"Sorry my fault, I forgot that you can't even take a compliment straight." He laughed.
"Fine. Thank you for the compliment. Go get some sleep now. Bye. I love you." She said sweetly.
"Love you too. Bye" he said in a flow, without realizing. He bit his tongue, unable to believe what he just said.
He looked at the phone, for a really long time. 'But, it came so naturally' he thought. He went inside the tent and lied down; he couldn't help remember Maya's words. She was making out with Ankush on the bus, for everyone and especially Virat to see. He just rolled his eyes and sat beside Rahul. He couldn't help feeling weird about the whole thing.
When they stopped for food in between Dr.Mehra called Virat and Ankush and told them that the department could only recommend one of them for the fellowship and they would be closely watching both of them from now on, especially in the camp. Virat felt very confident of himself, he shook Ankush's hand and was about to leave.
Then, he heard Maya telling Ankush "You have nothing to worry about baby, Virat had lost his touch since he had gotten married."
"Excuse me? What the hell are you talking Maya? I thought you were my friend." Virat turned back asked her hurt.
She sent Ankush away and sat beside Virat "I will always be your friend Virat, but I am a practical person, I will call a spade a spade. Let's face it, you have softened up after marrying that Manvi. You don't think anymore, you have become all emotional."
"Sour grapes Maya?" Rahul came in defending Virat. He never like Maya and always warned Virat to stay away from her. "Chal Virat, bus is about to leave."
"Ohh please. I have no use for him now. For your information, we were never serious about each other, we were just having fun. But, Virat is not fun anymore. Frankly, I think he lost it, I don't think he has it in him anymore. Pyaaar hogaya hai Virat ko. Kyu Virat? You used to laugh at the very mention of love, marriage and commitment. Remember?" she laughed with an evil grin.
"I still don't believe in them." Virat said in a daze, he wasn't the least bit ready for this confrontation.
Maya laughed "Then what is Manvi to you Virat, You know you stopped calling me, stopped answering my calls. You leave right after work, not even stay a minute more than required. Why Virat? You are always on the phone or texting.."
"So what is your problem in that Maya? I thought you didn't care about Virat." Rahul said, she was getting on his nerves. "Virat, tu chal ra ki nai?"
"I just thought Virat stood for what he believed in. Tell me Virat, tell me Manvi is just a passing cloud, tell me that you are just having a good time with her, I meanthat I can understand: she is much younger, pretty and you have a legal right on her.."
"SHUT UP MAYA!!!!! Don't speak another word about Manvi. You disgust me." He screamed and got up from there.
"I disgust you? You were exactly like me, a few months ago. You are hypocrite Virat. I thought you would be one of our greatest and I was so wrong. You are finished Virat Vadhera. Finished!"
"And I know Ankush is going to clinch this one for sure. You are nowhere close." Virat stood shocked at her words.
She came closer to him, and in a very concerned tone said "But Virat, I thought you were a smart guy. If you want to get over all this crap, I will help you, you know why? Because I know you have great potential and you are flushing it down the drain. I am not a faith healer Virat, I am a doctor and I thought you were one too. Please, get over whatever this madness you got infected with and get serious. Let me help you. It is cut-throat competition sweetheart, there is no place for the soft-hearted." She touched his chest with her finger and left."
He tossed around disturbed by her words. It was true that he changed. But why does this feel so right? He thought about what Manvi said "future world's best surgeon, the doctor with the golden hands..and a golden heart." He could actually picture her saying that, her eyes full of confidence, full of blind trust, just like Chanchal's. He smiled. All my life, I have been doing what makes me happy, what felt right, why is this any different. All he wanted right then was to go home to Manvi, rest his head in her lap and fall asleep as she played with his hair. His tired body that was aching all over, slowly slipped into a deep peaceful slumber, with a smile, thinking about that image.
The next week passed in a similar way, very hectic. But, Virat didn't think about the outcome anymore, he did his job dutifully and whole-heartedly. It wasn't the numbers anymore, it was the people. Everyday, he used to look forward to those few minutes he could manage to squeeze out to talk to Manvi. She didn't care about the fellowship, for her, he was already a hero. She would wave her magic wand and all his insecurities would vanish. She reminded him time and again, about why he wanted to be a doctor. To save lives, that was the most important thing.
There was a part of him, always thinking about her. He couldn't shut it off. He craved for her touch, her warm laugh and her incessant chatter. He couldn't wait to get back home to her, to hold her, kiss her and make love to her. He was amazed at himself for thinking all these things. In a little girl's innocent laugh, in a wife's concern for her husband's health, in a mother's love while scolding her son, he saw parts of her. On the hardest and worst days, he would think about her and his lips immediately curved into a big smile.
"Sometimes, you listen to so many people say it, over and over again, but I guess you have to experience it to believe it." Rahul teased him.
Doctors from the other hospitals took over and it was the end of two weeks. They were heading back home a day early. They wanted to surprise the girls, so both of them kept it a secret. After the long ride, they finally reached the city. Dr. Mehra, the other attending got up before everyone else and appreciated their hard work.
"Great job everyone. I am really proud of you all. We saved a lot of lives there." He said and everyone cheered clapping.
As everyone were getting down, Dr. Mehra walked upto Virat "Good Job Virat! I am really happy about your performance. I think it will be my pleasure and honor to recommend you to the neurology program at Hopkin's"
Virat was taken aback, he wasn't least bit expecting it "But sir, I thought ...anyways forget it, I am thrilled. Thank you so much sir." He shook his hand with great gratitude.
"Virat, you have always been an exceptional student, with flawless technique, but I thought, you only did as much as it was required, never went that extra step for your patients. But now, I am really amazed at how much you connect with them. When patients connect with you, they tell you everything, it helps the diagnosis and when they trust you, it works wonders to their treatment response. These are two important qualities of a great doctor. And when you looked past the numbers and gave more importance to your individual patients, you earned my respect kid. True, Ankush outbid you a little in terms of numbers but that was never the sole criteria." He looked at Ankush and Maya. "You have done an excellent job too Ankush. Congratulations."
"Great job, both of you. Hopefully, rest of the things will fall in place for you Virat!" He said leaving Virat beaming. Rahul came and hugged him tightly after Dr.Mehra left. "Dude, this is your dream. Congratulations buddy."
Virat walked to Maya grinning "You are right Maya, I did not believe in love or marriage or commitment for life. I thought of them as bondage, something that would tie me down. But with Manvi, I don't feel obligated, I don't feel tied down. It is the most liberating feeling. She didn't make me softhearted or vulnerable; she made me realize and feel a soft corner that was already a part of my heart, and converted that to my greatest strength. You know, I was always scared of failure; what will happen to me if I don't deliver, what if I lose, and like you said, I thought I would be finished. But end of day, having someone who will accept you and care about you, whether or not you succeed is truly a bliss. You want to know what Manvi is to me right, she is my support system, my partner, my life. That's exactly what she is to me. Love is just a label you put to some of these feelings you cannot otherwise describe." he said walking away putting his hand over Rahul's shoulder leaving a very angry and frustrated Maya.
She thought she knew him well. She thought if she would appeal to the hungry competitor in him, he would shake off all that warm gooey feelings he felt for that stupid wife of his. She thought, her cozying up with his competition would make him jealous. She thought she played smart and patient, but how could everything have back-fired so terribly. Manvi wasn't even here "I should have just seduced him" she thought aloud, leaving Ankush dumbstruck beside her.
note: ok the pandemic flu thing is really really dumb, I know. I was thinking of scenario's where Virat would find himself losing confidence, so that was the idea behind it. sorry, if it seems unreal and stupid.
