Bollywood has been shining with many new young stars in Bollywood. Tons of stars made their debut last year, such as Varun Dhawan (SOTY), Sidharth Malhotra (SOTY), Arjun Kapoor (ISHAQZAADE), Ayushman (VICKY DONOR) and Diania Penty (COCKTAIL). All of these actors made an impact in their own way amongst the movie-going audience. But, we can't forget those young actors too who arrived on the Bollywood scene a few years earlier! Two of those actors are actors who coincidentally arrived in the same year. 2008 saw the arrival of Imran Khan (JAANE TU YA JAANE NA) and Anushka Sharma (RAB NE BANA DI JODI). Oh, and another coincidence: both films were Blockbusters!
Both actors have done really well since they arrived in 2008. After the super-sucess of their first films (respectively), they tasted more success. Imran Khan with films like I HATE LUV STORIES, DELHI BELLY, and MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN, and Anushka with films like BADMAASH COMPANY, BAND BAAJA BARAAT, and JAB TAK HAI JAAN.
With MITRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA, they are doing a different type of film. Different, it will be, because director Vishal Bhardwaj has been known to make different kind of films that may not always necessarily appeal to a universal audience.
Truth be told, MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA doesn't have too much hype around it. This film may have to rely more on word of mouth. On one hand, the combination of the Indian nature of the film (including Imran's look) and the film having class-appeal as well could make the film universal appeal in India. BUT, there are other factors that could go against the film. One factor being that the film does not seem like a clean family entertainer, and that is observed from the promos. The adult style language and sexual things depicted will make it hard for the film to find appreciation from the family audience. As we know, the family audience is quite a large portion of the audience, and without appreciation from the families, it could make a dent in the film's business, more so at multiplexes. But of course, the word of mouth for the film will only be known when the film releases this Friday.
Opening-wise, the film's opening will be just about okay. On one hand, the face value and fresh pairing of Imran-Anushka will attract some audience, but on the other hand the lack of hype will hurt the opening prospects.
My Box Office Predictions for MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA:
Opening Day: 5.50 crores net
Opening Weekend: 20 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 45 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Average
