Do stars get too much credit for film's fate?

Do media, fans, trade in India give too much importance to stars while discussing fate of a film? In case of some films even content of film is attributed to star (even if he/she's done nothing except acting in the film).

Where does the writer, director and rest of the team figure?

Eg.: Why's DDLJ write up about SRK-Kajol only? What about Adi Chopra? Lagaan is mostly attributed to Aamir. What about Ashutosh Gowariker who conceived the film? 3 Idiots is only about Aamir? Its content and records - why Raju Hirani never discussed in this? Barfi and Kahani are discussed more for actors, less for Anurag Basu and Sujoy Ghosh. Mr. India is about Sridevi or Amrish Puri, how much is Shekhar Kapur mentioned? Does anybody discuss Sooraj Barjatya for MPK & HAHK?*

*Quoted some names just for example, no digs at any star.

BOI and other sites make lists of top stars, never top directors. Writers are never talked about either (probably the only writers people know about in history of Indian cinema are Salim-Javed!).

Analysis of any film is mostly about its impact on a star's status, or what it tells about his script sense. No one else from the team is talked of.

Even songs seem to be discussed more for stars than the singer, lyricist and music director.

Isn't the system too heavily star-centric? Is it fair? Is media to blame for this? Or are fans also responsible?

Do stars get way too much credit for a film's success (and disrepute if film fails)?

I think the stars kind of get excused for a film's failure. Success is entirely attributed to them. But if a film fails or underperforms it's said the star maybe made "wrong"/"experimental" choice or fault is director's and that whatever the film collected, it did so due to the star!

People remember script and director mainly when they have to blame them for lack of expected performance!

When the movie clicks, the actor/actress take credit for the success... But when the movie tanks or if the movie under-performs, its conveniently someone else's fault... Right from the director to the editor to the cinematographer... Everyone gets blamed...

you know this also spills over to the award shows...don't know the format followed in the past 2-3 years but i remember best actor being the last award!!

if you look westwards the last award is always best director/best movie!!!

and since we know the most important awards are saved for the end it's evident which way the scale tilts in bollywood!!

it has to do a lot with the exposure...a person on the street might not know who anurag basu is but will definitely know who ranbir is!! they become the face of the movie...but we should not let them overshadow the movie!!

as a member of the audience I have the utmost respect for the director followed by the cinematographers:)

Not just the script and director, weather gods are blamed... cricket matches on that day are blamed... dual releases are blamed... audience IQ is blamed... global warming is blamed... anything and everything other than the main leads... If we look back there are movies that have performed well inspite of all the hurdles at that particular time...

Movies that fail or underperform, clearly there is something wrong with the product... Clearly there is something that failed to click with the audience or it lacked something and thats why it did not have an universal appeal...

That's the way we judge every thing. We laud the product, not the manufacturer.

This face value logic applies to public. But even media does it. That's what's problematic, isn't it? At least the guys who record all happenings and post analysis should give credit to actual people behind a film?

Also, public comes to learn everything through media only. So isn't it responsibility of industry to highlight other people who work on a film?

All filmi sites keep posting rehashed articles on same old star comparisons. No talk of director, writer, cinematographer, stylist etc. Even look is attributed to star and not the stylist who creates it. Tribute articles on old movies also seem to heavily focus on star but not the makers of those movies.

Agreed. But I wonder if every factor is taken in consideration for underperformance then why aren't all factors taken into account when a film succeeds exceptionally? Success is all for leads. Failure is due to society, global warming, IQ, matches, current events blah blah blah but not star?

System engineered for a chit bhi meri, patt bhi meri type set up for a star?

Don't you think it would be humiliating for a director/producer if the audience had started leaving the studio because they had learnt who won the best actor's award? We as audience are shallow critters. Media feeds us what we want to imbibe.

I thank to award organizers for giving the lead actors awards at the end. At least, that's letting us know who were the makers.
