King Khan spills the beans on his leading ladies

I'll love them hamesha, says Shah Rukh Khan about his heroines

"One thing I'll say about all my leading ladies is that, I love them unconditionally," Shah Rukh Khan gushes. In a flash, the Shah of showbiz opens up the floodgates. In a marvelously garrulous mood at Mannat, his thoughts tumble out faster than the pouring rain outside.

His melting-chocolate eyes gleam as memories unspool and he narrates amusing anecdotes. "80 per cent of what I'm today is because of my heroines. The love they've given me, the help they've given me and the feeling of goodness they've generated while working with me is responsible for making me what I am." The irrepressible SRK fires away

Madhuri Dixit
Madhuri Dixit is the most solid man I've met in the industry.Yeah, you heard right. She's truly like a man. She's the most solid thinker, solid emotionally, solid believer. And someone who loves her parents immensely. And of course, her talent is unquestionable. She's the complete Indian film heroine.

She'd always help me with my dancing. I'd always dance a step behind her so I could follow her. Like in Koyla I would tell her just be half a step ahead of me, so it'll be easy for me. And she'd oblige.
I hope she comes back. I miss her. I miss seeing her more than I miss working with her. Juhi and Madhuri are my all time favourites though Juhi is much closer to me personally.

To me, Juhi and Madhuri are the epitome of acting, of love and friendship. They are closest to my heart. And they are two actors from whom I've learnt the most. These are the only two I feel I'm not as good as.

Even today if someone asks me which heroine would you like to work with, I'd say Madhuri, Juhi and Kajol. And I know all three of them don't work so much. The only time I participate in casting is when these three are involved. Which is not often. But even today if someone tells me we're looking for a college girl or for Lolita, I'll say Madhuri, Juhi, Kajol. If they're looking for an old woman, I'll say Madhuri, Juhi, Kajol. When I'm 50 and they ask me who'll play my daughter, I'll say Madhuri, Juhi, Kajol.

These three girls are my first loves. It's just that your first love is your first love. After all, I've done some great work with the three of them. I hear Madhuri is coming back. It'll be great. See, I do three films in a year. And I'd love to do them with the three of them.

Juhi Chawla
Juhi is my bestest friend. If I were to personify the 15-16 years that I've spent in the industry, it would be personified by two people and Juhi would be one of them. To me, she's the closest person in the industry. Her family is like my family. I can't do without meeting her. I enjoy her work. I enjoyed working with her. And I say to date that she's one actor I could never outdo. Her comic timing is impeccable, her expressions are beautiful. And again she has huge talent backed by conscientiousness and hard work. Of course, sometimes she can be too finicky and stuck up on detail which can bug you.

I've been in love with her since Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. I really believe I'm blessed to have worked with her. She thinks I'm a fluke. She calls me Lucky Ali. She says you're just lucky, man. Till date she tells me I'm the biggest fluke in the history of Indian cinema. "You have nothing going for you," she says.

When it comes to comic actors I would say Peter Sellers, Steve Martin, Jim Carrey. And among the greatest comic timing actors I've ever seen or ever worked with would be Juhi Chawla. Even now when I have to do a comedy scene, she is my reference point. Can I do it like Juhi? How would she have done it? The last film I did with her was One Two Ka Four. I saw that film recently on television. She's so funny man. I keep harping on her comic timing because I believe that for an actor to be great they have to be great at comedy. So that way Juhi is one of the finest, finest actors.

But I feel Juhi didn't get enough people to exploit her talent. Just like Amitji (Amitabh Bachcan). She has such a range as an actress. Watch her in Teen Deewarein, she's awesome.

On the personal level, I'm so close to her it's like family. The love I feel for her is something I can't describe. I love her kids Jahnvi and Arjun. And my whole point in life is that they should grow up thinking I'm their favourite uncle. It's my duty to completely spoil them. She's a fantastic mother, a little strict. So I feel it's my duty to spoil both of them. When I say I'll make her children rebel against her, she gets disturbed. But I love being with her and her children. We even plan our holidays together. It's one family I wish every happiness.

They're my extended family. So at a personal level, it's like talking about my own household.
Kajol
Kajol and I have had too many years of togetherness. There's just too much love. Too much buddiness. I don't see her very often these days though. She comes home once in a while and brightens up the surroundings. The whole house is in disarray. She shouts, screams and leaves such an impact that it takes a while to recover from it, emotionally (love-wise, happiness-wise, screaming-wise, news-wise and gossip-wise). When she goes away, we await her next visit. Like the Haley's comet, she's a regular. She returns brightly like a comet with a lot of spectacle.

I've never met a quiet Kajol. Even when you're alone talking to Kajol, it seems like you're talking to seven people. But you love her and respect her for the fact that when she says she misses you, she actually does. She's not just saying it. When she says she'll only work with you, she means it. When she brings her baby over and talks about your babies it's with as much love as she has for her own baby.

When she meets my kids, it seems as if she meets them every day. It's surprising that of all the people who come home, my kids remember her as if they've just met her the previous day. Many a times when they talk about her, I wonder whether she's come here in my absence. But no, it's that meeting they're talking about. They remember her because she's so loving. She overwhelms them with her love. As an actor what works for Kajol is that she will not do a scene if she doesn't believe in it. If she believes in it then she doesn't have to act. She has a simple style of acting. Which I wish I and a lot of other actors had. When we do a scene we try to understand it, try to find the essence of the scene. But effectively the only one who believes in the scene and does it is Kajol. She doesn't do anything special but on screen it's magic.

I remember when we finished the first schedule of Baazigar, an actor asked me how she was as an actress. And I said she's bullshit. She's only screaming and shouting, she's nonsense. And then I saw the rushes. And I realised that there's a quality about her which is beyond our capability to recognise. And that quality is not technique; it's not energy like mine. It's not understanding. It's belief. If she believes, she's fantastic. If she doesn't believe she'll laugh at her own film, at her own scene at her own trial. I've seen her do that.

She's a non-technical actor. She's an example of the fact that if your heart is in the right place your performance will be fantastic. We've done some really nice films together. I'm proud of the films I've done with her. Hopefully we'll work again. Whenever the comet comes again. Kajol is the Mani Ratnam of actresses. Whenever she says she wants to do a film, I'll do it.

I remember we had a little problem with Chalte Chalte. We were left without a heroine. The next morning Kajol was at my home. I didn't even think she would know about the problem. But she did. And then out of the blue she volunteered to do my film. I was surprised. But she was serious. She told me I know you want to make this film and I'd like to do the film. And believe me, to do a film with Kajol at that point was a huge, huge thing. I was besides myself with joy. Then she told me she had certain things to figure out first and if they didn't turn out the way she expected, she'd do my film. I realised later she was planning to start her family. She was scheduled to go to the hospital for her check up. I'm so glad that she had the baby and didn't do Chalte Chalte. Because that's more important.

And I really wish her and Ajay all the very best. People keep talking about some stress between Ajay and me. But there isn't. I don't know Ajay too well. We've met quite a few times and he's courteous but we've never spent time together. Maybe because we haven't worked together. But sometimes when the media builds the competition between two actors it plays on your mind. But I think maybe because of Kajol and her baby even that "playing on the mind" is over from my side. It irritated me when people spoke like that but not anymore. Then there was the Karan Arjun thing between us. Maybe he was right in thinking what he thought, maybe I was wrong. But now I've entered a phase where I just wish them a lot of love.

Rani Mukerji
Very few people know this. Now that she's successful, I can take credit for it. I spotted Rani in the promo of her first film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and recommended her to Karan (Johar) for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Karan, however, was trying to rope in Twinkle Khanna for the role of Tina. But since Twinkle was being launched as a full-fledged heroine in Rajkumar Santoshi's Barsaat, she rightly didn't want to do a second lead role. To compound matters, Saif Ali Khan and Chandrachur Singh refused the role Salman Khan did. Karan was quite desperate. I insisted that he at least meet her and when he did, he wasn't impressed. He wanted someone taller and Western looking.

After much deliberation, he decided to try her out. They straightened her hair, did her make-up and gave her a mini-skirt for the Koi mil gaya song. That's where it all started from. When I first saw her dancing, I realised she's a better dancer than me. She looked fantastic when she walks in with the guitar in the Koi mil gaya song. The first scene we did together, was her death scene in the film. It was a difficult scene for her first major film. But she was very good. That's when I spent time with her and got to know her. The good thing about Rani is that she's a silent learner. She sits quietly and observes and then imbibes. Rani can be in place, even when it's completely beyong her understanding or interest. Like she may wonder why I'm sitting with stamp collectors. But she will keep quiet and understand what's the right thing to say or do in a particular situation. This is her asset as an actor too.

I think Rani is very loyal to me. She doesn't need to be but she is. She knows I spotted her. She doesn't owe me anything for it but she behaves as if she owes me her life. I can call her right now and say, "Rani I'm doing a film and I want you in it. I don't know what you're doing but you have to come from tomorrow." And she'll come. She won't say, "Shah, I'm shooting in Jaipur." She'll come, start shooting and later perhaps she'll tell me her problems.

I've even slapped her a couple of times on the sets of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Chalte Chalte when she didn't deliver to the extent I believe only she can. Sometimes she has a concentration problem. Now, of course she insists that I slap her every time. She tells me, "If you slap me, the film becomes a hit."

Preity Zinta
Preity Zinta is again someone I've launched in Dil Se. I like to take credit for these two actresses. I told someone the other day, I've worked so much with Rani and Preity that I feel incomplete when they aren't shooting with me. They've become part of my unit. So when I go for a shoot, I have my make-up dada, me, my scene and I'm like, 'Preity, Rani kahan hain?'

Preity is someone who's modern, western. She's intelligent and has a mind of her own. She's an activist. She likes to sue for the smallest of things. The last time I asked her, "Where you going Preity?" She told me she had a case. I was like of course, what else? She'll sue the press, she'll sue the municipality, she'll sue anyone who is sue-able. I just hope when she gets married she doesn't start suing her husband.

But she's a sweetheart. She comes from an army background, which is what makes her very righteous. Things should be done in the right manner. But all said and done, she's a yaar, a dost. She'll really stand by you. When I was planning to buy an office for my VFX studio, she sent me a cheque of Rs11, 000. She said that's her participation in my studio. It was a sweet gesture. And to think I didn't really like her earlier on. Because of something she'd said. She told someone I'm a verbal flirt. I didn't like it. She didn't know me well enough to make such a remark. See, I joke with everyone. Maybe she didn't understand my sense of humour. Maybe she'd met men who said things like that with a different attitude so she got it wrong. Maybe I was wrong. I shouldn't have joked with her. So I refused quite a few films with her including Mission Kashmir. Of course, I never gave any film-maker the real reason for refusing the film. That was wrong because I'm a big star. I just told them I didn't like the film or didn't have dates. I've never mentioned it to anyone. In fact, this is the first time I'm talking about it.

Then Karan told me he wanted to sign her for Kal Ho Naa Ho. Initially, I was hesitant about his choice. But because Karan was making the film, I agreed. And because I'm very righteous I was clear that if I work with her in one film then I'll work with her in every which film.

Today I feel maybe I wronged her. Maybe I should have worked with her earlier because I really enjoy working with her. So I've missed out on those two-three years of working with Preity. She's really fun.

And she knows she has to work hard to hone her talent because acting doesn't come naturally to her. It's the same with me too. But I have never seen her shirk hard work. Today, she's a better dancer than she ever was. She's a prime example of 100 per cent hard work. I'll always love her. Now I'll go and clean roads with her every time she asks me.

Kareena Kapoor
Kareena is a little baby. I used to see her with Karisma all the time. For some reason, I remember her always wearing cream pants. She used to wear them really high. I spent some time with her in London recently and I found her very easy-going. She has a wicked sense of humour. She's mad. And she speaks her mind. If she doesn't like something, she says so. That way she's quite a Kapoor. She doesn't mind calling a spade a spade. Maybe that's why her initial interviews made her sound somewhat pompous.

She's so very beautiful, awesome to look at. She reminds me of crystal, so pristine and clear. My mother used to describe beauty in the olden days as, "Jab woh paan khaati hai to peekh gardan mein dikhti hai." (When she chews paan, her throat turns red.) Kareena's beauty is of that kind.

As an actress, she's uninhibited. That's why she is cut for comedy like she did in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Like Salman, she has a wacky sense of comedy. And she has evolved as a dancer. She's a modern actress a la Pooja Bhatt, youngsters like her a lot. Her personality is so strong that even when she's not giving hits, she's a superstar. Everyone still thinks of her as a leading heroine. Now I feel she's mellowing. Maybe because of her relationship with Shahid Kapoor. Sometimes relationships and friendships bring about maturity. It's having a good effect on her. I feel her time has just come. It was there when she started. This was her learning curve now she's going to burst on the screen with a huge amount of presence. Now that she has come into her own, the directors need to rise to the occasion.

For some reason, she's very, very fond of me. And I'm very fond of her. Somewhere I feel her mother's had a very positive influence on her. She's really made the sisters gritty and tough. She single-handedly honed these two girls to face the world. And I think they face the world immensely well. Kareena doesn't mind asking for what she thinks is rightfully hers. I like that quality in a girl. I hope I remain in that league long enough to work with her more often.

Sushmita Sen
When Sushmita walks into a room she gives me a natural stammer. I'm overawed by her presence. She's truly international. She's Miss Universe and beyond. Again she's amazingly professional, amazingly emotional. She has this whole vibe of searching for soul mates. She's a more philosophical kind of person. Her whole orientation is about spiritualism and vibes. Again she's a dost.

I feel very short, very small in front of Sushmita. I just met her in Paris recently. And she asked, "How are you, Mr Khan?" Sushmita calls me Mr Khan. I love it, no one else ever calls me Mr Khan. It's something I'll remember all my life. I asked her, "Sush, have you grown taller?" And she said, "No Mr Khan, you're looking shorter."

I remember we had 400 people on the sets of Main Hoon Na. We had Shah Rukh Khan, we had Boman Irani, we had Satish Shah, Binduji, we had Zayed and Amrita Arora. 400 hundred people screaming and shouting, doing masti and then Sushmita Sen walked in wearing a yellow fur coat. And there was absolute silence. That's the kind of effect she has on people. That whole scene where I fall in the movie when she passes me by wasn't meant to be like that. But I felt like doing it because if you see her walk in a sari, you'd automatically swoon. So I fell. That's the impression she gives.
She has an outstanding personality. She's so full of life and zest. And the one word to describe her is diva. She's the first and the original diva of India.

Aishwarya Rai
It's sad that things didn't work out with Ash in Chalte Chalte. But believe me, I bear no ill will towards her. I feel very proud of the fact that when you go to London, France, Germany, the only two Indian names people recognise are Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan has been there for so many years and he's wonderful. But Aishwarya Rai is our contemporary, younger than many of us. She's perhaps done less work than me and to still be the international face of Indian cinema is great.

Besides, she's the most beautiful woman in the world. And the first thing I noticed about her on the sets of Josh was that she's a true professional. You know there was all sorts of talk that she's a model, she can't act. She put that myth to rest on that set. She would be ready on the sets at seven in the morning, ready to act and looking better than all of us put together. And I loved the fact that we were playing twins, so I was supposed to look like her. Normally you assume twins to look alike. So it was a big compliment to me that I looked like her. I'm the only hero who looks like Aishwarya Rai. Ha!
See, people will keep saying that I don't work with her because I'm Shah Rukh Khan and supposedly a big star and powerful enough to say no to her. Yes, I didn't want to work with her for a year. And it wasn't for any reason I can attribute to her. It's just that I felt embarrassed after what happened.

Because somewhere down the line, whether it was the company's decision or the decision of the team, it finally came down to the fact that Shah Rukh threw her out of the film. That's utterly untrue. Because everyone sat down and decided that it's not going to work out. But I was given the discredit for removing her from the film. And I would like to erase from my memory that I was ever party to something like this. Because I don't think, and I'm being honest here, that anyone should be in a position to remove anyone from a movie. I have never done that. But as a producer I had to take this decision. And I'm not justifying it. She would have been wonderful in Chalte Chalte. And she'll always be someone I'd like to work with.

Priyanka Chopra
She's very hard-working. Priyanka is the first of the heroines of the new generation that I'm working with. And I find her highly accomplished. She's full of confidence and ready to learn. I have a personal equation with Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza. I crowned them Femina Miss Indias. So I've known them since then. They don't seem like novices to me. Okay, so Priyanka has done eight films. But I don't think I was as good even after eight films.

She does her homework, she knows her lines and she works hard on what she's going to do. She reads the script thoroughly because there were certain scenes we'd overlooked in Don and she pointed them out to us. I assume all the girls are going to be like that in the Gen Next.

I remember she had to do a fight sequence and she was rehearsing like crazy. Even I rehearsed but she was at it for hours. She was on a proper diet. She was all there and hugely professional on the sets. But on the sets she was not hyper or over reacting to the fact that she was doing a big film. She was at ease. She was easier on the sets than I was. I think the confidence comes because she's rehearsed. She knows where she's going, and doesn't hesitate asking for a re-take. These girls know their mind and heart.

I remember I called Priyanka to dub for the Temptation world tour. She didn't come because she was busy. The others did their stuff. And I was apprehensive about Priyanka's capability. I thought she wouldn't be able to do it. Then Priyanka came and did it. And I was, God, I'll have to hear it and (in my senior mind I'm thinking) I'll have to re-do it. But she was outstanding. The control she has on her voice is simply amazing. She should use it more often. She's one person I feel who's close to Juhi when it comes to using her voice.
