Thursday, 27th December 02:00 PM IST What makes Bollywood distinct from any cinema across the world is the song and dance nature of storytelling. This year with numerous hits at box office, we got some real musical films with melodious songs. Here is our pick of top 10 music album of the year - 1. Barfi! Choice was tough but there was no other album in the year with numerous melodious songs and such a impeccable variety. If "Ala Barfi" was amazingly sweet then "Phir Le Aaya Dil" was rare meaningful gazal in today's times. Overall album was a clear winner with exceptional mixture of soulful lyrics and some real melodious tune. These songs might not do that well on air and in terms of sales in today's time of item numbers and mindless remixes but it has a long shelf life. This is Pritam's best work till date. "Aashiyan", "Ala Barfi" and "Main Kya Karoon" are simply outstanding and so are "Kyon" and "Sawaali Si Raat". No doubt film went on to become 100 cr grosser despite such a offbeat theme. 2. Ishaqzaade This film starring newcomers had a small town setting and film's music did justice to it. Earthy, entertaining, melodious and charming - all in one album was simply outstanding. Amit Trivedi delivered some real chartbusters and some catchy lyrics (lyricist Habib Faisal and Kausar Munir) did the rest (remember "Jhallah Wallah"). Overall album was an excellent mix of songs which are intense, real and melodious at same time. "Ishaqzaade" is one more winner from Amit Trivedi who has once again delivered a class romantic album with a difference. 3. Jab Tak Hai Jaan This was easily the most awaited albums of the year. Deadly combo of Oscar winner Rahman with ace lyricist Gulzar and director Yash Chopra made it memorable. Though album received mixed reviews and some termed as too Punjabi and some termed it not so good. But then who said that masters will deliver always a universal album. Overall album is an interesting score where "Saans", "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Heer" give you haunting and passionate Yash Chopra melodies and onthe other hand "Challa", "Ishq Dance" and "Jab Tak hai Jaan – Poem" give you the stylish A R Rahman at his very best. 4. Blood Money This Vishal Mahadakar's film was surprise hit of the year but it was the music of the film which remained with every listener. Sayeed Quadri's lyrics and Jeet Ganguly's music were perfect partners. "Chahat", "Gunaah" and "Jo Tere Sang" were chartbusters and "Arzoo" was equally good. Overall an album which remained best offering from Bhatts' camp in 2012. 5. Vicky Donor If one has to choose one track then "Paani Da Rang" can easily be the single most popular track of the year sung by debutant actor cum singer Ayushmann Khurrana. "Mar Jaiyaan" was other melodious irresistible song from the album and "Rum Whisky" was peppy disc number. "Kho Jaane Do" was soft but "Rokda" and "Chaddha" were okay at best. Overall this one was two song wonder. 6. Cocktail Saif Ali Khan produced this youthful romantic flick but Deepika with Dina took the cake. And next best thing was music by Pritam. Amitabh Bhattacharya and Irshaad Kaamil wrote some real cool lyrics. "Tum Hi Ho Bandhu" was anthem so was "Yaariyan". "Jugni" and "Luttna" were different. "Second Hand Jawaani" and " Daaru Desi" were peppy and chartbusters too. Overall album is a fantastic medley of urban and classy songs. 7. Agneepath This Hrithik Roshan starrer crossed 100 cr nett and music was surprisingly very good in such an action film. "Abhi Mujh Main Kahin" and "Saiyyan" were warm and melodious. "Deva Shri Ganesha" was rage in festivals and "Chikni Chameli" was one of the hottest item songs of the year. Ajay - Atul made mark as music director. 8. Student Of The Year A Karan Johar film always comes with the promise of chartbuster youthful songs. SOTY lived up to expectations and "Radha", "Disco Deewane" and "Ishq Wala Love" were chartbusters. "Vele" and "Ratta Maar" went on to become youth anthem. Super hit music but lacked variety and depth. 9. Jannat 2 This Emraan Hashmi film had some real gems like "Tu Hi Mera" "Tera Deedar Hua" and "Tujhe Sochta Hoon". "Rab Ka Shukranaa" and "Sang Hoon Tere" were also good but this Pritam's album lacked novelty and everything looked repetitive. Still one more hit album from Bhatt camp. 10. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu This Imran - Kareena starrer had one of the best urban music albums of the year. "Gubbare" was heartfelt pure melody and "Aahatein" was truly romantic. Title song and "Aunty Ji" were peppy hit numbers. Overall a great album with lot of substance but somewhere similar in nature. Not so bad: 1. Talaash 2. Teri Meri Kahaani 3. Agent Vinod Some other notable mentions... 1. Gangs Of Wasseypur 1 & 2 2. Shanghai 3. Jism 2 4. Heroine 5. Raaz 3 Top 5 Massy Album Of The Year 1. Rowdy Rathore 2. Dabangg 2 3. Khiladi 786 4.
