Konkana Sen Sharma's Ek Thi Daayan is based on her father Mukul Sharma's book. Mukul is a columnist with The Times Of India and he has been a close observer of witch craft that is reportedly rampant in Bengal.

Since Konkana Sen also grew up in Kolkata she could understand the nuances and intricacies of the role far better than most others and this made producer Vishal Bhardwaj was confident that she was the best choice for the role.
