As far as I know Amrita Rao does has a twin sister. The picture posted here I believe is her twin sister. Amrita doesnot like to see her twin in the lime light.

And I thought Babita and Sadhana are first cousins - not sisters.

Amrita Rao has a twin sister. So, why do the Raos deny it?

This may sound like a quintessential Hindi film plot, but it isn't. The story so far goes that Amrita Rao is a 23-year old model-turned actor, a rising star and a cool teen icon, who hasn't looked back since Main Hoon Na. Now, there's a twist in the tale: Amrita Rao has an identical twin sister, Prita. Which is fine, except that the Rao family refuses to acknowledge the fact. We wonder why.

The fact came to light when a national magazine ran an item on Prita, stating that she is into modelling. That's when we tried to contact Prita, and came up against a baffling story. We were categorically told that Prita was Amrita's younger sister. "Amrita and I are not twins," said Prita. "We look different. She is two-and-a-half years older than me." Meanwhile a Connosa Convent, Mahim, classmate of Amrita and Prita gave us this (see pic on page 36) class VII-A photograph, where both Amrita (third row) and Prita (first row) can be seen.

At school, the two sisters were apparently quite a rage. A classmate says, "We always got confused between Amrita and Prita because both of them looked so similar. Among the twins, Prita was more reserved, while Amrita was outgoing. Amrita was very different from her present goody-goody image. She wore short skirts and moved among the hip crowds."

At present, we also have documenting evidence in hand which shows that both Amrita and Prita were born on June 17, 1982. To date, Amrita and her family haven't really acknowledged Prita's presence in public. They have always shielded her from the limelight. Although Amrita's mother often accompanies her to shoots and to premiere shows, her sister has never made a public appearance. Prita, on her part, held on to her version of the story. However she refused to either meet us or be photographed.

When we tried to contact Amrita Rao, her mother came on the line and said, "Yes, I do have another daughter, but she has nothing to do with films. She is not interested in giving interviews or talking to the press." Later she called us back to insist that we don't write about the sisters. We found the request rather baffling.

Prita even claimed that it wasn't her in the magazine photograph (see left pic). "She is my cousin and not me. I will sue the magazine," she insisted refusing to divulge any more details, including the name of her cousin. When contacted, director Farah Khan, who has worked with Amrita in Main Hoon Na, reiterated Prita's words. "Amrita is two years older than Prita," she said. "I've met Prita, and they don't look similar. When Main Hoon Na was being filmed, Prita was in school or college."

The story got murkier as we came up against more and more contradictory information, all given by the family. For instance, Prita asserted that she was planning to go to the US to study medicine, even though her college friends claim that she was studying for a BA degree. A college classmate, who says that the Rao twins studied were in his class, says, "She studied psychology, philosophy and Political Science. We stopped seeing them (the Rao twins) after FYBA."

Another classmate of the twins at Ruparel College, 2000-2001 FYBA batch, N Minouti, further confirms the fact that the two sisters are actually twins. "They're definitely twins," she says. "I remember Amrita could sing well and always took part in singing competitions. Although they were twins, I got the impression that Amrita's mother only promoted her, while Prita remained in the background."

A teacher who has taught the Rao sisters confesses, on condition of anonymity, "Amrita wanted to hide the fact that she had a twin sister. She said she was afraid of being 'typecast'. Somehow I could never understand the logic behind it." Another teacher tells us that Prita would usually attend the lectures at college while Amrita would be busy shooting. "Amrita once told me that Prita takes down notes and she studies from them."

Amrita Rao: Twin dilemma
It is difficult to confirm this story but insiders and reports in newspapers have it that Amrita Rao has a twin sister. And according to the reports, the Rao family is not ready to acknowledge this. First the sister was some cousin who was struggling model in Mumbai. Later it was learnt that she was Rao's real twin sister also known in the modelling circle. She had shot an ad for Cadburys. When contacted Amrita Rao's mother admitted that Amrita indeed had a twin sister. "But she is not a model. In fact she will be flying to the US to pursue medicine," mama Rao said. However, according to reports Prita had completed her graduation in BA. Also Amrita and Prita happened to be in the same class in school. So why was Amrita keeping Prita away from limelight? Was it because she feared competition? It seems that mama Rao wants to focus only on Amrita and leave Prita to fend for herself.

'Hiding my sister?'


So is AMRITA really hiding her twin sister? A recent article claims so. Amrita laughed off the rumours when we spoke to her on Saturday, going on to give us her side of the story.

All her friends and colleagues have met Prita. Reports appearing in the media say so too. "So where's the question of hiding a sister and that too such a pretty one?' asked Amrita.

"I haven't read the article, my family did. But the article was written without interviewing me or any of my family members so first we thought it was really silly, had blunders, and laughed it off… it wasn't worth reacting to, but to stop the phone calls from ringing we decided why not clear it out.

Tell me, does anyone need to shout from the rooftops that hey I have a sister? People who know me know that I do and others don't matter and does anyone care?'

"I'm proud of my sister's success. I talk about her all the time, and all my directors, my colleagues and my friends have met her. The last time she came on my set was a month ago.

It's really sad when people with no information make claims that my family shields her away from the limelight, when she is a successful model herself. And we were most amused to read that my mom only promotes me and not my sister.

On the work front, in any case I don't have a filmy background for my mom or dad to promote me or my sister, here it's your work that speaks.'

Her sister is stunningly beautiful; does she plan to get into movies too?

"She's got over a dozen movie offers, if she wants to join movies she always can, we have many a star sister success stories. But unfortunately she doesn't seem to be in interested.

Someday if she changes her mind, it would be fun to work with her. But you know she often tells me that when she tells people that she is not interested in movies they don't believe her.

It's hilarious when we hear that competition is the reason why we are hiding my sister! Oh please! She's my sister and I love her, that's all that matters.

Now the big question… are they really twins?

Amrita laughs heartily, "Yes, she is. In fact we are triplets... Would anyone like to meet the 3rd one too? Come home... she is hiding in the closet...'
